What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?

In short: There is no single minimum. The RBI does not set one; each lender decides its own cut-off. Many large banks prefer 700–750 or more for an unsecured personal loan, while many NBFCs lend from around 650 and some go lower. Omozing considers salaried applicants from a score of 600 with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more. Near any cut-off, your income, existing EMIs and the last 12 months of repayments matter as much as the number itself.

Where different lenders typically start

A lender’s minimum score is a screening line, not a law. It reflects how much risk that lender is set up to take and how closely it is willing to read each file. That is why the same 640 can be declined in seconds by one lender and approved by another after a proper review.

Common starting points on the 300–900 scale

Many large banks (unsecured loans) often 700–750+ Many NBFCs often from about 650 Omozing (salaried, take-home ₹40,000+) considered from 600 300 600 650 700 750 900

A general guide drawn to scale. Each lender sets and changes its own cut-offs, and they can differ by product, loan amount and the bureau the lender uses.

Two other cases are worth knowing. If your score shows as -1 or NH, you have no credit history yet, which is not the same as a low score; see what -1 or NH means. And clearing a cut-off only gets you a closer look. It is not an approval.

Why the score is only the first filter

Once your score clears a lender’s line, a credit team asks a simpler question: can this person comfortably repay this EMI? These are the things that usually decide it.

What lenders checkWhat they look for
Take-home salarySteady monthly credits into your salary account
FOIRShare of take-home already going on EMIs; many lenders cap it around 50%. How FOIR works
Last 12 monthsNo fresh missed EMIs or card dues, and no new defaults
Recent enquiriesA cluster of applications in a few weeks reads as credit hunger
Open small loansSeveral app or BNPL loans running at once
Older problemsSettled or written-off accounts, and whether they were later cleared
What most people get wrong: they believe 750 is an RBI rule. It isn’t. 750 is a figure many banks like, not a legal minimum. The opposite mistake is just as common: assuming that clearing a lender’s cut-off means approval. A 760 with half the salary already on EMIs can be declined, while a 640 with clean recent repayments and low FOIR can be approved.

Below a lender’s minimum: what you can do

  1. Check your report for errors

A loan that isn’t yours or a closed account still showing as open can drag the score. Correcting errors is free. How to raise a dispute.

  2. Lower your FOIR

Closing small loans, or combining several loan-app loans into one EMI with SmartSwitch, frees up room in your salary.

  3. Add a co-applicant

A spouse or family member with steady income can strengthen a borderline file. How co-applicants help.

  4. Apply where you fit, once

Read each lender’s published eligibility and apply to one or two, not ten. Each application can add a hard enquiry.

  5. Give it a few clean months

On-time payments and card use under about 30% of the limit are what move a score. No one can promise a particular number by a particular date.

Score between 600 and 700?

If you are salaried with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, a credit officer reads your full report rather than stopping at the number. Rates start from 11% a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an RBI minimum CIBIL score for personal loans?

No. The RBI does not set a minimum score. Each lender decides its own cut-off and how it reads the rest of your report.

Can I get a personal loan with a CIBIL score of 600?

With some lenders, yes. Omozing considers salaried applicants from 600 with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, after a credit officer reviews the full report.

Can I get a personal loan with a score of -1 or NH?

Some lenders lend to first-time borrowers, usually for smaller amounts and with closer checks on income. A -1 or NH means no history, not a bad history.

Does a higher score mean a lower interest rate?

Often, yes. Lenders price for risk, so compare the APR in each lender’s Key Fact Statement rather than the headline rate.

Why was I rejected even though I met the minimum score?

The cut-off is only the first filter. High existing EMIs, recent missed payments or many recent applications can still lead to a decline.
