Will a secured credit card help build my score?

Yes, if you use it the right way. A secured credit card is issued against a fixed deposit, so banks approve it even with no history or a damaged one. It is still a credit card, and its use is usually reported to the credit bureaus like any other card (check with the issuer). Spend a small amount each month, keep the statement balance under about 30% of the limit, and pay the full bill on time. After about six months of reported activity, someone with no history can usually get a first score, and someone rebuilding starts adding clean months to their report.

How a secured card works

You open a fixed deposit with the bank, and the bank issues a card with a limit linked to that deposit. The issuer decides what share of the deposit becomes your limit. The deposit usually keeps earning interest, but it is held as security: if you don’t pay your card bill, the bank can recover the dues from it. From the bureau’s point of view, though, you are simply a cardholder with a limit, a balance and a payment record. That record is what builds your score.

Open an FD with a bank that offers a card against it.
Get the card with a limit set by the issuer.
Use it lightly: one or two regular bills a month.
Pay in full by the due date, every month, by auto-debit.
Graduate to an unsecured card once your score is established.

A worked example: the small-limit trap

Say you put ₹50,000 in a fixed deposit and the issuer gives you a ₹40,000 limit (an illustrative figure; your issuer sets the actual limit). Thirty per cent of ₹40,000 is ₹12,000. That is your rough ceiling for the statement balance each month, which is less room than many people expect.

Same ₹40,000 limit, four monthly statements

₹6,00015% ₹12,00030% ₹20,00050% ₹36,00090% 30% guide = ₹12,000 ₹0₹40,000 limit

Bars drawn to scale against the ₹40,000 limit. Illustrative figures, not a real customer. Utilisation is read from the statement balance, so a ₹36,000 statement shows 90% even if you pay it in full.

The fix is easy: put only a phone bill or a streaming subscription on the card, or make a part-payment before the statement date if you have a big month. Why 30% matters.

What most people get wrong: they think they need to carry a balance and pay interest to “show activity”. You don’t. Paying the full statement on time builds exactly the same payment history, costs nothing in interest, and keeps your utilisation figure clean.

Who it suits, and who it doesn’t

No history at all

If your report shows NH or -1, a secured card is one of the simplest ways to start a file. Building from zero.

Rebuilding after a default

When unsecured cards are hard to get, a secured card lets you add clean months to your report while old entries age. The rebuild timeline.

Already holding a card

If you have an active card in good standing, another card adds little. Use the one you have well.

Money locked away

The FD is tied up while the card is open. Don’t use money you may need for an emergency.

From secured card to a personal loan

Once your report shows a score and several clean months, ask your bank about an unsecured card or apply for one, and keep the secured card open for a while so its history stays active. When you need a personal loan, Omozing considers salaried applicants with a score from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, and a credit officer reads your full report, including how you’ve handled that first card.

Frequently asked questions

Is a secured credit card reported to CIBIL?

Usually, yes. It is a credit card, and banks generally report it to the bureaus like any other card. Confirm with the issuer before you apply.

How long before a secured card gives me a score?

If you have no history, bureaus can usually score you after about six months of reported activity. Until then your report may show NA or 0.

What limit will I get on a secured card?

The issuer links your limit to the fixed deposit and decides the exact share. Ask before you open the deposit.

Can I close my secured card later?

Yes, and the deposit is released once all dues are cleared. Many people keep it open for a while after getting an unsecured card so the account’s history stays active. Closing a card and your score.

Does my FD still earn interest?
