Personal Loan Without Collateral: How Unsecured Loans Work in India

Table of Contents

In short: Yes. Most personal loans in India are unsecured: you don’t pledge property, gold or deposits. Instead the lender relies on your income, your repayment history and your existing debts to decide how much to lend. No asset is at risk, but missing payments still damages your credit score and leads to collection and legal action, so borrow only what your monthly budget can carry.

If you want a side-by-side comparison of secured and unsecured loans, read secured vs unsecured loans. This guide answers a narrower question many borrowers ask first: without collateral, what does a lender actually look at, how much can you get, and what happens if things go wrong?

What replaces collateral

A secured lender can sell an asset if you don’t pay. An unsecured lender can’t, so it leans harder on four things that predict whether you will pay.

Steady income

Regular salary credits into your bank account are the strongest signal. That is why many unsecured lenders, Omozing included, lend only to salaried people and ask for salary-account statements.

Credit history

Your report shows how you have handled past loans and cards. A score is a summary; a careful lender reads the detail behind it.

Existing EMIs

Lenders check what share of your take-home already goes to EMIs. The more you already owe, the less room for a new loan.

Stability

Time with your employer, time at your address and a consistent history all reduce perceived risk.

If one of these is weak, a co-applicant with a steady income can fill the gap. See how a co-applicant strengthens a loan application.

How much can you borrow without collateral?

Without security, the loan size is set mainly by how big an EMI your income can support. Here is an illustration for borrowers with no other EMIs.

Illustrative maximum unsecured loan by monthly take-home

₹5.7L₹40,000 ₹8.5L₹60,000 ₹11.4L₹80,000 ₹14.2L₹1,00,000

Illustrative only. Assumes up to half of monthly take-home can go to EMIs, no other EMIs, a 36-month tenure and 16% a year on a reducing balance. Actual limits depend on each lender’s policy, your credit report and your rate. Existing EMIs reduce these amounts rupee for rupee of EMI.

Two practical takeaways. First, clearing a small existing loan can raise your eligible amount more than a pay rise would. Second, a longer tenure lowers the EMI and so raises the amount, but you pay more interest overall. If your salary is at the lower end, read personal loans with a lower salary.

How an unsecured lender decides

KYC and bank statements confirm who you are and what you earn.
Credit report shows repayment history, open loans and recent enquiries.
Affordability check works out the EMI your income can carry.
Offer with amount, rate, fees and APR in a Key Fact Statement.
Disbursal straight into your own bank account after you sign.

What’s at stake if you can’t repay

“No collateral” does not mean “no consequences”. Here is how the two kinds of loans compare when payments stop.

If you see trouble coming, talk to your lender before the EMI date. Our day-by-day guide to what happens after a missed EMI explains the timeline.

Improve your chances of an unsecured loan

  • Check your credit report for errors before you apply, and dispute any you find.
  • Close or pay down small loans and card balances to lower your existing EMIs.
  • Apply to lenders whose policy fits your score and income instead of many at once.
  • Keep salary credits regular and in one account for the six months before you apply.
  • Ask only for what you need; a smaller amount with a comfortable EMI is easier to approve.
  • Add a co-applicant with a steady income if your own profile is thin.

When a secured loan may be the better choice

An unsecured loan is the simpler choice for most salaried borrowers. A secured loan, such as a loan against a fixed deposit, gold or an insurance policy, may make sense if you have no regular salary, need a very large amount, or want a lower rate and are comfortable putting the asset at risk. Our guide to loans against assets explains the options; Omozing does not offer secured loans.

Omozing personal loans: no collateral needed

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan without collateral?

Yes. Most personal loans in India are unsecured. Lenders rely on your income, credit history and existing debts instead of a pledged asset.

Do all personal loans require collateral?

No. Standard personal loans are unsecured. Some products, such as loans against fixed deposits, gold or insurance policies, are secured, but they are usually called by those names.

Is the interest rate higher without collateral?

Usually, yes, because the lender has no asset to fall back on. Your rate depends on your credit profile and income; compare offers on the APR in the Key Fact Statement.

What happens if I don’t repay an unsecured loan?

No asset is seized, but the default is reported to credit bureaus, the lender will pursue collection within RBI fair-practice rules, and legal action is possible.

How much can I borrow without collateral?

It depends mainly on the EMI your take-home can support after existing EMIs, plus the lender’s policy. Omozing lends up to ₹25 lakh to eligible salaried borrowers.

Can I get an unsecured loan with a low credit score?

It is harder but possible with some lenders. Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600 and reviews the full report.
