A festive bonus feels like found money. That feeling is exactly why it often disappears in a week: a new phone, a few dinners, a sale that was too good to miss. None of that is wrong, but a bonus is also the one lump sum many salaried people get all year, and it can fix problems that a monthly salary never quite does.
This is day 2 of our Diwali 2026 series. Yesterday we built an 18-day festive money plan. Today: what to do with a bonus, in order, with the maths behind the order.
First, work out what you actually have
A bonus paid through payroll is treated as part of your salary, so tax is usually deducted at source before it reaches you. Plan with the net amount credited, not the figure in the announcement email. If your bonus comes in a later month, don’t spend it in advance on a card; wait until it lands.
Then list everything you owe, with the true monthly cost of each. That list decides the order of everything below.
Why expensive debt comes first: the maths
Repaying a loan is a guaranteed return equal to the interest and fees you no longer pay. Compare what ₹25,000 costs you each month in different places:
Monthly cost of carrying ₹25,000 in different ways
Illustrative. Loan app: a 10% fee plus 1% a day for 30 days at each monthly rollover (₹2,500 + ₹7,500). Credit card: 3.5% a month on an unpaid balance. Personal loan: interest in the first month at 11% a year. Your lender’s Key Fact Statement or card statement shows your actual cost.
Closing a ₹25,000 app loan that you keep rolling over saves around ₹10,000 every month in this example. No investment pays like that. That is why the order below starts with debt.
5 smart ways to use your Diwali bonus, in order
Clear costly app loans and card balances
Start with loans that charge daily interest or rollover fees, then any credit card balance you’ve been carrying. Get the closure confirmation or NOC for every app loan you close, and check a few weeks later that it shows as closed on your credit report.
Top up your emergency fund
A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential expenses in an easy-to-reach account. Even one month’s worth means the next surprise bill doesn’t send you back to a loan app.
Set a fixed, guilt-free festive amount
Decide one figure for celebration, put it in the festive envelopes from your Diwali money plan, and enjoy it fully. Choosing the number in advance is what makes it guilt-free.
Pre-fund known big bills
School fees, insurance renewals, annual subscriptions and next year’s travel are not surprises. Park money for them now so they don’t land on a card later.
Put the rest to work for a goal
A home deposit, a course, retirement savings: whatever matters to you. This is general information, not investment advice; compare options carefully or speak to a registered adviser.
Two illustrative splits of a ₹40,000 bonus
Two illustrative profiles, not real customers. Both receive ₹40,000 after tax. One has app loans; one doesn’t.
| Use | Priya (two app loans, ₹25,000) | Arjun (no costly debt) |
|---|---|---|
| Clear expensive debt | ₹25,000 | ₹0 |
| Emergency fund | ₹7,000 | ₹15,000 |
| Festive spending | ₹6,000 | ₹8,000 |
| Known big bills | ₹2,000 | ₹7,000 |
| Long-term goal | ₹0 | ₹10,000 |
| Total | ₹40,000 | ₹40,000 |
Priya still gets a festival. But from November her salary is no longer leaking about ₹10,000 a month to rollover fees, which over a year is worth far more than the ₹2,000 more she might have spent on gifts.
If the bonus doesn’t cover all your app loans
Many people carry more app debt than one bonus can clear. If that’s you, the bonus still helps, but the bigger win is stopping the rollover cycle on what remains.
That third step is what Omozing SmartSwitch is built for. Here is an illustration: ₹75,000 spread across three apps can cost about ₹30,000 a month in fees and interest when rolled over (10% fee per rollover plus 1% a day). One Omozing EMI of about ₹7,750 for 12 months (illustration: 2% a month flat plus a 4% fee) would leave you roughly ₹3.4 lakh better off over a year. The money comes to your own account, you close each app loan within about seven days and share the NOCs, and then you repay one EMI that actually ends. Your exact terms appear in the Key Fact Statement before you sign. For more on why rollovers hurt, see what a payday loan really costs.
The best Diwali gift you can give next year’s self is a salary that arrives without being spoken for.
Three bonus mistakes to avoid
- Spending it before it arrives. Pre-spending on a card or “pay later” means interest if the bonus is smaller or later than expected.
- Leaving app loans running “because they’re small”. Small loans with daily interest are exactly the ones that grow fastest.
- Locking all of it away. If you have no emergency cash, a long lock-in leaves you exposed to the next surprise bill.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Diwali bonus taxable?
A bonus paid by your employer is generally treated as part of your salary income and taxed accordingly, with tax usually deducted at source. This is general information; check your payslip and consult a tax professional for your situation.
Should I repay debt or invest my bonus?
If you have debt with high interest or daily charges, such as loan-app loans or a revolving credit card balance, repaying it usually gives a higher, guaranteed return than any investment. Once costly debt is gone, a long-term goal makes more sense.
Should I prepay my personal loan with my bonus?
It can reduce your interest, but check your loan agreement for any prepayment terms first, and clear more expensive debt and build an emergency fund before prepaying a lower-cost EMI loan.
How much of my bonus should I spend on Diwali?
There is no fixed rule. Decide a fixed amount in advance after handling costly debt and your emergency fund, and spend that amount without guilt.
Does closing app loans improve my CIBIL score?
Closing loans on time and having fewer active accounts can help over time, as lenders report repayment to credit bureaus. Collect an NOC for each closed loan and check your credit report a few weeks later to confirm it shows as closed.
What if my bonus can’t clear all my loan-app debt?
Close the costliest loans first, then consider consolidating the rest into one EMI with a regulated lender. Omozing’s SmartSwitch is designed for salaried borrowers carrying several app loans.
