If you are new to the idea itself, start with our explainer on what debt consolidation is and when to do it. This post answers a narrower question that many borrowers ask once they search for help: should you pay someone to do it for you?
The three kinds of “consolidation help” you will find
Search for debt consolidation and you will see three very different things sold under the same name. Knowing which is which saves money and protects your credit report.
1. A consolidation loan from a lender
A bank or RBI-registered NBFC gives you one personal loan. You use it to close your other loans and cards, then repay one EMI. Your old accounts close as paid, which is good for your credit report.
2. Balance transfer or restructuring
Your own bank moves a card balance to a cheaper loan, or a lender agrees to stretch your tenure. Useful when you have one or two large debts with a lender you already bank with.
3. A paid “debt relief” agency
A third party charges you a fee to talk to your lenders. In practice this often means negotiating a settlement, where you pay less than you owe and your report is marked “settled” for years.
Only the first two are true consolidation. The third is debt negotiation, and it is the one most often sold as “professional consolidation”.
DIY consolidation vs a paid agency, side by side
| Apply to a lender yourself | Pay a debt-relief agency | |
|---|---|---|
| Who lends or decides | An RBI-regulated bank or NBFC | The agency only negotiates; your lenders still decide |
| Fees | Processing fee shown in the Key Fact Statement before you sign | Agency fee, often charged upfront or monthly, on top of what you owe |
| Effect on your credit report | Old loans close as paid; one new loan reports on-time EMIs | Accounts are often marked settled, which lenders read as a loss |
| Speed | Days to a couple of weeks | Months of negotiation, with missed payments in between |
| Recovery calls | Stop once the old loans are closed | Often continue until each settlement is agreed |
| Best for | Salaried people who can pay one sensible EMI | People who genuinely cannot pay anything for now |
Do you need professional help? A quick test
If yes, go to the next step. If not, speak to your lenders about restructuring before anyone else.
Add up what you pay every month today. If one EMI at a fair rate fits your take-home, a consolidation loan is the answer.
Then lenders who read your full report, such as Omozing, can consider you. Below that, look at a co-applicant or secured options first.
This is the narrow case where negotiation help may be worth it. Use a reputable counsellor and understand the credit-report cost before you agree.
What consolidation does to your monthly outgo
The biggest wins come from replacing short-term app loans, where fees and daily interest pile up every time you roll a loan over. Here is an illustrative case using figures we often see.
Monthly cost: three app loans vs one consolidation EMI
Illustrative. ₹75,000 spread across three app loans, rolled over monthly with a 10% fee per rollover plus 1% a day interest, costs about ₹30,000 a month. One 12-month loan at an illustrative 2% a month flat with a 4% fee works out to about ₹7,750 a month. Over a year that is roughly ₹3.4 lakh kept. Your actual rate and fees appear in your Key Fact Statement.
No agency fee is needed to get this result. You can model your own numbers in the SmartSwitch calculator.
“Debt consolidation without income verification”: why to walk away
Some people search for consolidation loans that skip income checks. A genuine lender has to check that you can repay; under RBI’s responsible lending expectations, that is part of the job. Offers that skip it tend to fall into two groups: unregulated apps that recover through harassment, and agencies that take a fee and never deliver a loan. Both leave you worse off.
The good news is that verification is simple for salaried people. At Omozing it takes two documents: your last six months’ salary-account bank statement and your latest salary slip.
Red flags in “professional consolidation” offers
- An upfront fee before any loan is approved. Omozing never asks for money before approval, and neither should anyone else.
- Advice to stop paying your lenders “so we can negotiate”. Missed payments go straight onto your credit report.
- Promises to “remove” negative entries from CIBIL. Only genuine errors can be corrected, and you can dispute them yourself for free.
- No named RBI-registered bank or NBFC behind the loan, or no Key Fact Statement before you sign.
- Requests for access to your contacts, call logs or photos. RBI’s digital lending rules do not allow lending apps to take them.

How to consolidate on your own in five steps
List every debt
Write down each loan and card: outstanding amount, monthly payment, due date and any foreclosure charge. Pull your free credit reports to make sure nothing is missing.
Find your total monthly outgo
This is the number one EMI needs to beat. For app loans, include rollover fees, not just interest.
Apply to one regulated lender
Pick a lender that suits your profile and apply once. Several applications in a week add several hard enquiries to your report.
Read the Key Fact Statement
Check the APR, fees and total repayable before signing. You also have a cooling-off period on digital loans to exit if you change your mind.
Close every old loan and collect NOCs
Repay each loan the day the money arrives, collect no-dues certificates and check your credit report a couple of months later to confirm the accounts show as closed.
Where Omozing fits
Omozing is the digital lending brand of Aparampaar Finance, an RBI-registered NBFC in Bengaluru that lends to salaried people across India. If your debt is mostly card balances or bank loans, a personal loan of up to ₹25 lakh with rates starting from 11% a year can replace them. If it is several short-term app loans, SmartSwitch is built for exactly that: the money goes to your own account, you close each app loan within about seven days and share the NOCs, and you are left with one EMI.
A credit officer reads your full report rather than rejecting you on a cut-off, and we consider scores from 600 with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more. Approval is never guaranteed, but you will not pay an agency to find out.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a professional to consolidate my debt?
Usually not. If you have a steady salary and can afford one EMI, you can apply for a consolidation loan directly from a bank or RBI-registered NBFC. Paid help is mainly relevant when you cannot pay at all and need someone to negotiate settlements.
Does debt consolidation hurt my CIBIL score?
A consolidation loan adds one hard enquiry and a new account, which can cause a small, temporary dip. Closing several loans as paid and then making on-time EMIs usually helps over time. Settlement through an agency is different: “settled” remarks hurt for years.
Can I get a debt consolidation loan without income proof?
Not from a responsible lender. Genuine lenders verify that you can repay. For salaried applicants this is quick; Omozing needs a six-month salary-account bank statement and your latest salary slip.
Are debt settlement agencies legal in India?
Negotiating on someone’s behalf is not illegal in itself, but the agency is not your lender and settlement damages your credit report. Avoid any agency that asks for large upfront fees or tells you to stop paying your lenders.
Is a balance transfer better than a consolidation loan?
A balance transfer works well for one large credit card balance with a bank that offers a lower rate. If you have several different debts, including app loans, one consolidation loan is usually simpler.
What credit score do I need for a consolidation loan?
It depends on the lender. Omozing considers salaried applicants with scores from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, and a credit officer reviews the full report.
