What debt consolidation means
Consolidating debt is a simple swap. You take one larger loan, use it to close several smaller ones (credit cards, personal loans, app loans), and from then on you make one payment to one lender. Done well, it cuts three things at once: the interest rate, the number of due dates you can miss, and the stress of juggling.
Two credit cards, a personal loan and maybe a couple of app loans, each with its own date and rate.
One loan for roughly the total outstanding, paid into your own bank account.
Pay off each one in full and collect closure letters or NOCs.
A fixed monthly amount for a fixed term, with a clear end date.
It is not the same as debt settlement, where a lender accepts less than you owe and your credit report records the account as settled. Consolidation pays every lender in full.
When should you consolidate? A four-question test
Answer these honestly. If all four are yes, consolidation is very likely to help.
- Is the all-in cost lower? Compare the new loan’s APR (interest plus fees, shown in its Key Fact Statement) with the rates you pay now. Credit-card revolving balances and short-term app loans are usually far more expensive than a personal loan.
- Does the single EMI fit your salary? After rent, household costs and other fixed payments, you should still have a cushion each month.
- Will the term be reasonable? Spreading a debt over a much longer period can lower the EMI but raise the total interest.
- Will you stop using the old credit? If cleared cards go back to full within months, you end up with the loan and the card debt.
Not sure which way your debts point? Our guide to getting out of a debt trap covers situations where consolidation alone won’t fix the problem.
A worked example: what consolidation actually saves
An illustrative profile, not a real customer. Ravi, a salaried professional, owes:
| Debt | Outstanding | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Two credit cards (revolving) | ₹1,50,000 | 3.5% a month (42% a year) |
| Personal loan, 18 months left | ₹1,00,000 | 18% a year |
| Total | ₹2,50,000 |
He can afford about ₹12,240 a month. Two choices:
Keep the old debts
Pay the loan EMI and put the rest towards the cards. It takes about 33 months to clear everything, with roughly ₹1,44,000 in interest.
Consolidate
One ₹2,50,000 loan at an illustrative 16% a year for 24 months: EMI about ₹12,240, interest about ₹43,800, plus a 3% fee with GST of about ₹8,850. Total cost about ₹52,600, done in 24 months.
Total interest and fees to become debt-free
Illustrative. Assumes the same ₹12,240 monthly payment in both cases; cards at 3.5% a month, the existing loan at 18% a year, and a consolidation loan at 16% a year for 24 months with a 3% processing fee plus 18% GST. The 16% is an assumption for the example, not an Omozing quote. Your actual rate and APR are in the lender’s Key Fact Statement.
The saving here is about ₹91,000 and nine months. Most of it comes from getting the card balance off a 42% rate. If Ravi’s debts were all at 14–16% already, consolidation would save little and the fee could cancel it out.
Ways to consolidate debt in India
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Unsecured personal loan | Salaried borrowers with card or loan debt | Processing fee; compare APR, not just the rate |
| Credit-card balance transfer | One card, small balance you can clear quickly | Low introductory rates can rise sharply after the offer ends |
| Top-up home loan or loan against property | Large debts, homeowners | Your home is security; long terms raise total interest |
| Gold loan | Short gap, quick need | You can lose the gold if you miss payments |
| Loan-app consolidation (SmartSwitch) | Several 7–30 day app loans being rolled over | You must close each app loan and share NOCs |
| Debt-management agency | When you can’t manage on your own | Fees and credit-report effects; see DIY vs professional help |
How to consolidate your debt, step by step
List every debt
Lender, outstanding amount, rate or fee, due date and any foreclosure charge. Your credit report helps you catch anything you forgot.
Work out your all-in cost today
Add up a month of interest and fees across everything. This is the number to beat.
Get a quote and read the KFS
RBI rules require a Key Fact Statement showing the APR before you sign. Compare that APR with your current costs.
Borrow only what you need
The total outstanding plus any foreclosure charges, not a round extra amount “just in case”.
Close every old debt immediately
The money lands in your own account. Pay each lender the same week and collect closure letters.
Lock or cut up the cleared cards
Keep the oldest card open with a tiny spend for your credit history, but don’t revolve a balance again.
What consolidation does to your CIBIL score
Expect a small dip from the new application and the new account. After that, consolidation usually helps: card utilisation falls, you have fewer open accounts and one EMI is easier to pay on time. The risk is the opposite behaviour, adding new card debt on top. For more on how the number of loans affects your score, read does having multiple loans affect your credit score?
How Omozing can help
Omozing offers unsecured personal loans to salaried people with a take-home of ₹40,000 a month or more and a credit score from 600, with rates starting from 11% a year and terms of 3 to 36 months. Your exact rate, fees and APR are in the Key Fact Statement before you sign, and we never ask for an upfront fee before approval.
If your debt is mostly short-term app loans being rolled over every week, SmartSwitch is built for that: one Omozing loan pays into your account, you close each app loan within about seven days, and you are left with one EMI.

Frequently asked questions
What does consolidating debt mean?
It means taking one new loan to pay off several existing debts, so you have one lender, one EMI and one due date instead of many. The aim is a lower total cost and a simpler repayment.
Is debt consolidation a good idea?
It is a good idea when the new loan’s APR is clearly lower than what you pay today, the EMI fits your budget and you stop using the cleared credit. It is a bad idea if it only stretches the term or if you run the cards up again.
Can I consolidate credit card debt with a personal loan?
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. Revolving card balances are usually much more expensive than a personal loan, so moving them to a fixed EMI can save a lot of interest.
Does debt consolidation hurt my CIBIL score?
There is usually a small, short dip from the new enquiry and account. Over time it tends to help because card utilisation falls and one EMI is easier to pay on time.
Is debt consolidation the same as debt settlement?
No. Consolidation pays every lender in full with a new loan. Settlement means a lender accepts less than you owe, and the account is marked settled on your credit report, which hurts your score for years.
Can I consolidate loan-app debt?
Yes. Omozing’s SmartSwitch replaces several short-term app loans with one Omozing loan and one EMI. The money is paid to your own account and you close each app loan within about seven days.
