How to Raise Your Company’s Business Credit Score (CIBIL Rank and Commercial Credit Report Guide)

Table of Contents

In short: In India, a company’s creditworthiness is captured in a commercial credit report from a credit bureau, and TransUnion CIBIL summarises it for smaller businesses as the CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR), on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the lowest risk. You improve it the same way lenders judge it: repay every loan and EMI on time, keep cash-credit and overdraft limits from running at the ceiling, avoid a burst of loan applications, fix errors in the report, and keep the promoters’ personal credit scores healthy, because for most MSMEs lenders read both.

What a business credit score actually is

Individuals get a three-digit credit score between 300 and 900. Businesses work differently. When a company, LLP, partnership or proprietorship borrows from a bank or NBFC, that lender reports the account to the credit bureaus, and the bureaus compile a commercial credit report for the business. TransUnion CIBIL calls its version the Company Credit Report, and Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark publish their own commercial reports too.

On top of the report, CIBIL gives smaller businesses a CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR). Instead of a three-digit number it is a rank from CMR-1 to CMR-10: CMR-1 signals the lowest likelihood of default, CMR-10 the highest. Larger corporates are assessed more on audited financials and external credit ratings than on a bureau rank.

One thing surprises many founders: a business with no loans from regulated lenders often has no commercial report at all. Paying suppliers on time is good practice, but in India supplier credit is mostly not reported to bureaus. Your business credit record is built mainly through loans, overdrafts, cash-credit limits, business credit cards and guarantees with banks and NBFCs.

For a proprietorship, the business and the owner are legally the same, so lenders lean heavily on the owner’s personal score. For a company or LLP, they pull the commercial report and still check the personal scores of directors, partners and guarantors. A strong CMR with a director who has a written-off personal loan is a hard file to approve. That is why improving business credit starts with both reports.

How a lender reads your business credit

Promoters’ personal scores. Every director, partner or proprietor is checked. Defaults here can stop a file early.
Commercial report and CMR. Repayment history, overdue days, how full your working-capital limits run, recent enquiries, guarantees.
Bank statements and GST returns. Real cash flow: turnover, bounced cheques, EMI debits, how regularly returns are filed.
Financials and documents. ITRs, audited accounts for larger loans, Udyam registration, business vintage.

The order and weight vary by lender and loan size. Small and unsecured loans rely more on the first three steps.

What moves a business credit rank up or down

Repayment track record

On-time EMIs and interest servicing on every facility. Days past due (DPD) are the single biggest negative.

Limit utilisation

A cash-credit or overdraft that sits at 100% month after month, or is overdrawn, reads as stress. Headroom reads as control.

Age and mix of credit

A long, clean history across a term loan and a working-capital line beats a single new facility.

Too many enquiries

Applying to several lenders in a few weeks creates hard enquiries that signal urgency.

Guarantees you have given

If a related firm you guaranteed falls behind, it can show up against you too.

Serious remarks

Settled, written-off, suit-filed or wilful-default entries weigh heavily and take years to fade.

Nine steps to raise your company’s business credit score

  1. Pull every report first

Get the company’s commercial report (and CMR if you qualify) and each promoter’s personal report. You cannot fix what you have not read. Individuals get one free full report from each bureau every calendar year; commercial reports are usually a paid service on the bureau’s website.

  2. Correct errors

Look for closed loans still shown as open, wrong sanction amounts, overdue entries you have already cleared, or accounts that are not yours. Raise a dispute with the bureau and the lender, with your no-dues certificates attached. Our CIBIL dispute resolution page explains the process.

  3. Clear anything overdue

Overdue facilities hurt every month they stay open. Pay them down, starting with the oldest DPD, and ask the lender to confirm the updated status to the bureau.

  4. Automate every repayment

Set up NACH or standing instructions for each EMI from an account that always has a buffer. One bounced EMI costs more in credit standing than the bounce charge.

  5. Give working-capital limits room to breathe

Try to keep average cash-credit and overdraft usage well below the sanctioned limit, and never let it run over. If the business genuinely needs more, ask for a limit review rather than overdrawing.

  6. Space out applications

Shortlist lenders, compare terms, and apply where you are a good fit. Several rejections in a month leave enquiries behind and make the next lender cautious.

  7. Formalise the business

Udyam registration, timely GST filing, a dedicated current account and clean books make the business easier to assess and can open better products, including GST-based business loans.

  8. Build a track record deliberately

A small working-capital line or business credit card, used and repaid on time, builds history faster than waiting for a big loan.

  9. Protect promoters’ personal credit

Do not let a personal card or loan slip while you focus on the business. For proprietors especially, the personal score is the business score in practice.

A realistic 12-month plan

From messy report to lender-ready

Month 0–1Pull all reports,dispute errors Month 1–3Clear overdues,automate EMIs Month 3–6Lower CC/OD usage,no new enquiries Month 6–12Apply with a cleanrecent track record

An indicative path. How fast a rank or score moves depends on the full history and on how often lenders report, so no one can promise a particular rank by a particular date.

An illustrative example

An illustrative profile, not a real customer: a small packaging firm in Pune runs a cash-credit limit at or above its ceiling most months, has one term-loan EMI that bounced twice last year, and applied to four lenders in six weeks after a large order came in. The director’s personal score is fine. Over the next year the firm clears the overdraft excess, moves the EMI to an auto-debit from an account with a buffer, stops applying until month nine, and gets a stale “open” loan that was actually closed corrected through a dispute. Nothing dramatic, but by month nine the file a lender sees has clean recent repayments, headroom on its limit and no fresh enquiries, which is exactly what credit officers look for.

Where this leaves you on business loans

A stronger business credit profile widens your options: lower rates, larger limits and fewer demands for collateral. If you are still rebuilding, read our guides to types of business loan, startup business loans and getting a business loan with a low CIBIL score. Our sister company FundsTiger runs a loan marketplace that compares business loan options from multiple lenders.

Omozing itself currently lends to salaried individuals, not businesses. If you are a salaried professional with a side business, a personal loan in your own name is assessed on your salary and personal credit, not the business’s report.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good business credit score in India?

For MSMEs rated by TransUnion CIBIL, the CIBIL MSME Rank runs from CMR-1 to CMR-10, and a rank closer to 1 signals lower risk. Lenders set their own cut-offs, and they also check the personal credit scores of the owners or directors.

How do I check my company’s credit score?

Request the company’s commercial credit report from a credit bureau such as TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark through their websites. It is usually a paid service, and you will need the entity’s details and documents to verify that you are authorised.

Is there a free company credit report?

Individuals are entitled to one free full credit report per bureau each calendar year, but commercial reports for businesses are generally paid. Check each bureau’s website for current options.

Does my personal CIBIL score affect my business loan?

Yes. For proprietorships the owner’s personal score is central, and for partnerships, LLPs and companies lenders check every partner, director and guarantor. A poor personal record can hold back an otherwise healthy business.

How long does it take to improve a business credit rank?

Corrections can appear within a few reporting cycles once a lender updates the bureau. Building a strong repayment record usually takes six to twelve months of consistent behaviour, and serious remarks such as write-offs fade over years.

Do supplier payments build business credit in India?

Mostly not. Credit bureaus receive data mainly from banks, NBFCs and other regulated lenders, so business credit is built through loans, credit lines, business cards and guarantees. Paying suppliers on time still helps your reputation and trade terms.

Can a new business get a loan without a credit history?

Yes, but options are narrower. Lenders lean on the promoters’ personal scores, bank statements, GST returns and any collateral. A small secured facility, repaid on time, is a common way to start a business credit record.
