This is a practical recovery plan for someone who already has a write-off. For a side-by-side explanation of the account statuses “closed”, “settled” and “written off”, see what closed, settled and written off mean on your report.
What “written off” in CIBIL actually means
When a loan or credit card stays unpaid for a long time, usually many months past due, the lender may decide it is unlikely to be recovered and write it off in its accounts. That is an accounting decision by the lender. It is not forgiveness: the lender, or a recovery agency acting for it, can still pursue the dues through lawful means, and the account is reported to the bureaus with a written-off status and the amount.
How lenders read a write-off
How seriously lenders tend to read each account status
A qualitative ranking, not a score calculation. Each lender applies its own policy, and how recent the remark is matters as much as what it says.
Two things change how a write-off is read: how old it is, and what happened next. A write-off from four years ago, paid off, with clean repayments since, tells a very different story from one last quarter that is still unpaid.
10 steps to improve your CIBIL score after a write-off
Pull all four reports
Get your report from TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. You are entitled to one free full report per bureau each calendar year. Note the lender, account number, amount written off and date.
Check it is really yours and really correct
Wrong amounts, accounts you closed long ago, or loans you never took can be disputed. See CIBIL dispute resolution.
Contact the lender, not a stranger
Call or write to the lender’s official customer-care or collections address and ask for a written statement of the outstanding amount. Do not pay agents who contact you without verifying them with the lender first.
Ask about waivers of penal charges
Lenders may consider reducing penalties or late charges. Ask what paying the full principal and interest would close the account as.
Pay in full if you can, rather than settling
A settlement leaves a settled remark. Paying the full dues lets the account be closed as paid, which reads far better.
Get a no-dues certificate
Once paid, insist on a written no-dues or closure letter that names the account. Keep it safely; you may need it for years.
Check the update after a couple of cycles
Lenders report to bureaus regularly, usually monthly. If the status still shows written off with an amount outstanding, raise a dispute with your NOC attached.
Stop new damage
Pay every other EMI and card bill on time, and keep card balances under about 30% of the limit.
Add positive history carefully
A secured credit card against a fixed deposit, used lightly and paid in full each month, adds on-time records without much risk.
Space out applications
Each rejected application adds an enquiry. Wait until your report has had time to reflect the changes, then apply to lenders who read the full report.
You can’t erase a write-off. You can bury it under a long, clean record that a lender believes.
Pay in full or settle? The trade-off
| Pay in full | Settle for less | |
|---|---|---|
| Cash needed now | Higher | Lower |
| Status afterwards | Closed (paid) | Settled, or a post-write-off settled status |
| How lenders read it | Past trouble, now resolved | The previous lender took a loss |
| Future loans | Easier once history rebuilds | Many lenders stay cautious for years |
If you can only afford a settlement today, it is still better than leaving the account unpaid. Some borrowers settle first and later go back to pay the difference and ask for the status to be updated; ask the lender whether it allows this before you settle.
Mistakes that make a write-off worse
- Ignoring it in the hope it disappears. The remark stays and the dues can grow with charges.
- Paying anyone who calls without verifying them with the lender.
- Paying an agent to “remove” the write-off. Accurate entries can’t be removed.
- Taking instant app loans to cover the gap. A second default compounds the first. Check any app on the RBI-registered loan apps list before you borrow.
- Paying without getting a no-dues letter.
An illustrative case
Sana (an illustrative profile, not a real customer) had a ₹48,000 credit card balance written off in 2023 after she lost her job. Now salaried again, taking home ₹52,000, her score is 590. She asks the card issuer for a full statement, negotiates a waiver of some late charges, pays the rest over two months, and gets a closure letter. When the bureau update lags, she raises a dispute with the letter attached. She opens a secured card and keeps every payment on time. After several months of clean history her score has recovered past 600, which brings her within reach of lenders who assess from 600, though each lender still reads the old write-off in context.
When Omozing can consider you
Omozing, the lending brand of RBI-registered NBFC Aparampaar Finance, does not lend while a write-off is still unpaid. Once it is paid and your score is 600 or more, and you are salaried with take-home pay of ₹40,000 or more, a credit officer reads your full report rather than rejecting on the remark alone. We look at when the write-off happened, how it was resolved and how you have repaid since. If you need help working through your report first, our Credit Score Booster can review it with you.
Rebuilding after a write-off?
Get your report reviewed and a plan to rebuild, then apply when your score is back to 600 or more.
Frequently asked questions
What is written off in CIBIL?
It means a lender has reported that it no longer expects to recover a loan or card balance and has written it off in its books. The debt is still owed, and the remark is visible to every lender who checks your report.
How can I improve my CIBIL score after a write-off?
Pay the dues, preferably in full, get a no-dues letter, make sure the bureaus update the status, and then build a long record of on-time payments with low card use. The improvement is gradual.
Can a written-off account be removed from my CIBIL report?
Not if it is accurate. If it is wrong, for example the account was paid or is not yours, you can dispute it with the bureau and have it corrected.
Is it better to settle or pay a written-off loan in full?
Paying in full is better for your report, because the account can close as paid rather than settled. Settling is still better than leaving it unpaid.
How long does a write-off affect my credit score?
The remark stays on your history for years, but its weight falls as it ages and as you add on-time payments. Recent write-offs matter far more than old, resolved ones.
Can I get a personal loan after a written-off account?
It is difficult while the write-off is unpaid. Once it is resolved and your score recovers, some lenders will consider you. Omozing considers salaried applicants with a score from 600 and take-home pay of ₹40,000 or more, subject to assessment.
Omozing is the digital lending brand of Aparampaar Finance Private Limited, an RBI-registered non-deposit-taking NBFC. Loans are subject to credit assessment. See our regulatory disclosures and grievance redressal process.
