If you want to try fixing things yourself first, start with our 10-point remedy for a score below 600. This guide is about when to get professional help, and how to get real value from it.
Why below 600 is where counselling earns its keep
At 680, a score is usually held back by something simple, like a full credit card or a few too many applications. You can fix that alone. Below 600, a report typically shows a combination of problems, and the order you tackle them in makes a big difference. Pay the wrong lender first, settle when you could have closed, or take a new app loan to cover an old one, and you can lose a year.
Too many moving parts
Three or more lenders with overdue or settled accounts, and no way to pay them all at once.
Pressure, not a plan
Recovery calls set your priorities instead of what actually helps your report the most.
Settlement offers on the table
A lender is offering a settlement and you don’t know whether it will help or haunt you.
Report you can’t decode
Codes like SUB, DBT, LSS or written off, and accounts you don’t recognise.
Also note that 600 matters in its own right. It is around where some lenders, Omozing among them, start considering unsecured personal loans after reading the full report. Getting from 560 to 610 can change your options more than going from 700 to 750.
What happens in a good session
Every account across the bureaus is listed with its status, overdue amount and lender.
Your take-home pay, fixed costs and what you can realistically put towards debt each month.
Which accounts to bring current first, which to negotiate, what to dispute.
What to ask each lender for: penalty waivers, restructuring, or full closure rather than settlement.
A month-by-month plan you take away, with a review date.
The output of a good session is a written plan you could follow without the counsellor in the room.
What to bring
- Your latest credit report from CIBIL, and if possible Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. You get one free full report from each every calendar year.
- Six months of salary-account bank statements and your latest salary slip.
- A list of every loan, card and app loan: lender, amount, EMI, how far behind you are.
- Any settlement offers, legal notices or no-dues certificates you have received.
- A note of your monthly fixed costs: rent, school fees, family support.
Counsellor, DIY or “credit repair agent”?
| Do it yourself | Genuine counselling | “Score fixer” agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | One or two simple problems | Several defaults, settlements or confusion about order | No one |
| What you get | Your own research and effort | A prioritised, written plan and help talking to lenders | Promises |
| Disputes | Free, filed by you | Help identifying real errors; you can still file free | Charges to “remove” accurate entries, which no one can do |
| Score promise | None | None, but realistic expectations | “Guaranteed 750 in 30 days” |

Six questions to ask before you start
What exactly will I get, and in writing?
Expect a report review and a written plan, not vague “score improvement”.
What does it cost, and when do I pay?
Fees should be clear up front. Be wary of large advance payments tied to promised results.
Will you ask me to stop paying my lenders?
A good counsellor won’t tell you to stop paying lenders as a negotiating tactic; that adds defaults.
Who contacts my lenders?
Know whether you or they will speak to lenders, and get any agreement with a lender in writing from the lender.
How do you handle my documents and data?
You are sharing sensitive financial information. Ask how it is stored and who sees it.
What results should I expect, and when?
An honest answer talks about what can change and roughly when, never a guaranteed number.
Red flags
- A guaranteed score or a “delete your defaults” promise. Accurate history cannot be removed.
- Requests for your banking passwords, OTPs or net-banking login. Never share these.
- Pressure to take a new loan from a partner app on the spot. Check any app against the RBI-registered loan apps guide.
- Advice to settle everything quickly. Settled remarks stay for years; closure is better where you can afford it.
If you are being harassed by an unregistered app, report it on the RBI Sachet portal or to the cybercrime helpline 1930 (cybercrime.gov.in). See how to deal with fake loan apps.
How Omozing can help
We’ll be straight: Omozing doesn’t lend when a credit score is below 600. What we do offer is our Credit Score Booster programme, where our team reviews your report with you and sets out a practical plan. We never promise a particular score. Once you are back to 600 or above, are salaried and take home ₹40,000 or more a month, we can consider you for a personal loan, with a credit officer reading your full report and rates starting from 11% a year, the exact terms in the Key Fact Statement before you sign.
Below 600 and not sure where to start?
Get your report reviewed and leave with a plan you can follow.
Frequently asked questions
Is 600 a good CIBIL score?
It is on the low side, but 600 is roughly where some lenders, including Omozing, begin to consider unsecured personal loans after reading the full report. Below 600, options are mostly secured loans.
What does a credit counsellor actually do?
They review your credit reports and budget, work out which accounts to tackle first, help you prepare to negotiate with lenders, and give you a written plan to rebuild your score.
Can credit counselling remove defaults from my CIBIL report?
No. Accurate information cannot be removed by anyone. Counselling helps you correct genuine errors, regularise accounts and build new positive history that outweighs the old entries over time.
Will credit counselling hurt my credit score?
A counselling session itself does not appear on your report. What affects your score is what you then do, such as paying overdue accounts or agreeing a settlement.
Can I fix a score below 600 without a counsellor?
Yes, if your situation is fairly simple. Pull your reports, clear live overdue accounts, dispute errors and rebuild with on-time payments. Counselling helps most when there are several lenders and you are unsure of the order.
How long until my score is above 600 again?
It depends on what is on your report. Clearing overdue amounts and errors can show within a few reporting cycles; recovering from settlements or write-offs usually takes many months of clean history.
