This guide is about one practical step that most borrowers skip: explaining a default to a new lender. For the broader question of which lenders and loan types are open to people with a default, read loans for CIBIL defaulters: myths and real options. If you are not sure what “default” on your report actually means, start with what being a CIBIL defaulter means.
What a lender sees when you have a default
There is no official “defaulter list” in the bureaus. What a lender sees is the account itself: months marked with days past due, and a status such as overdue, settled or written off. A credit officer then asks three questions:
How serious?
A few months at 30 or 60 days past due is very different from a write-off.
How recent?
A default four years ago followed by clean repayment reads very differently from one last year.
Is it resolved?
An account still overdue is a much bigger concern than one that has been closed or settled.
Your explanation and evidence exist to answer these three questions clearly and quickly.
Before you apply: make the record as strong as it can be
A realistic path from default to a credible application
Illustrative sequence. Timing depends on how serious and how recent the default is, and on how quickly the lender updates the bureau.
Resolve the account
If it is still overdue, contact the lender. Paying in full and getting the status updated to closed is best. A settlement stops the bleeding but leaves a “settled” status; if you can later pay the shortfall, ask the lender to update it. See our steps for a written-off account.
Collect proof
Get a no-objection certificate (NOC) or closure letter, and keep the bank statement showing the final payment.
Check all four reports
Make sure CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark all show the updated status. If one does not, raise a dispute with your NOC attached.
Build a clean run
Six months or more of on-time EMIs and card payments since the default gives your explanation something to stand on.
Your evidence pack
Lenders move faster when you hand them proof instead of a story. Match the pack to your situation.
| What caused the default | Useful evidence |
|---|---|
| Job loss or salary delay | Relieving letter, new offer letter, bank statements showing salary resumed |
| Medical emergency | Hospital bills or discharge summary (share only what is needed) |
| Business or family crisis | A short factual note, and documents showing it is over |
| Loan-app debt spiral | NOCs for each closed app loan, and statements showing no new app borrowing |
| Dispute with the lender, or fraud | Complaint references, police or cybercrime complaint, lender correspondence |
| Any case | NOC or closure letter, latest credit report, 6 months of salary-account statements |
A sample explanation letter
Keep it short, factual and forward-looking. Do not over-explain or blame the old lender. Replace everything in square brackets.
Subject: Explanation of past default on [lender name] [loan type] account
Dear Sir or Madam,
My credit report shows overdue payments on my [loan type] with [lender name] between [month, year] and [month, year]. This happened because [one-line reason, for example: I lost my job in March 2024 and was without salary for five months].
I resumed full-time employment with [employer] in [month, year]. I [paid the outstanding amount in full / settled the account] on [date], and the account is now closed. The NOC is attached.
Since then I have paid all my EMIs and card bills on time for [number] months, as my attached bank statements and credit report show. My current take-home pay is ₹[amount] a month, and my existing EMIs total ₹[amount].
I am applying for ₹[amount] for [purpose]. I would be glad to answer any questions.
Yours faithfully,

A good explanation answers three things: what happened, that it is fixed, and why it will not happen again.
Choosing where to apply
- Lenders that read the full report. Some apply an automatic cut-off; others have a credit officer review your history and explanation.
- Your own bank. It can see your salary credits and conduct directly.
- Secured options. A loan against a fixed deposit, or a secured credit card, is easier to obtain and rebuilds history.
- A co-applicant. A spouse or family member with a clean record and steady income can strengthen the case; see applying with a co-applicant.
- One application at a time. Several rejections in a row add enquiries and make the next lender more cautious.
Be wary of anyone who says a default “does not matter” if you pay a fee first. Genuine regulated lenders do not ask for money before approval. Check any lending app using our guide to RBI-registered loan apps.
How Omozing looks at a past default
Omozing lends to salaried people with a credit score from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000 or more. A credit officer reads your full report, so a resolved, older default followed by clean repayment is considered in context rather than rejected by a formula. Approval is never guaranteed: an account that is still overdue, or a very recent default, will usually need to be resolved first. If your score is below 600 today, our Credit Score Booster programme can help you plan the way back.
Default resolved, salary steady?
Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600. Your rate, fees and APR are in the Key Fact Statement before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan after a CIBIL default?
Often yes, especially once the defaulted account is resolved and you have several months of on-time payments. Lenders look at how serious and how recent the default was, and your current income.
Should I write an explanation letter to the lender?
Yes, if your report shows a default. A short, factual letter with proof of resolution and current income answers the credit officer’s questions before they are asked.
Is it better to settle or pay a defaulted loan in full?
Paying in full and getting the account marked closed is better for your report. A settlement leaves a “settled” status that lenders read as a negative.
How long should I wait after a default before applying?
There is no fixed rule. Resolving the account and building at least six months of clean repayment usually puts you in a much stronger position.
What documents prove a default has been resolved?
A no-objection certificate or closure letter from the lender, the bank statement showing the final payment, and an updated credit report showing the new status.
Can a co-applicant help after a default?
Yes. A co-applicant with a clean record and steady income can strengthen your application, though the lender still reviews your own history.
