Most advice on borrowing with bad credit treats every low score the same. Lenders don’t. A credit officer reading a 640 caused by one bad year in 2022 sees a very different borrower from a 640 caused by six open loan-app accounts. For an overview of every loan type available with a low score, see loans for a low CIBIL score; for which lenders to approach, see personal loan for a low or bad CIBIL score. This guide helps you pick a route based on the story your credit report tells.
Start here: a four-question route finder
Which route fits you?
A simplified guide, not a credit decision. Every lender assesses your full profile; Omozing’s criteria are salaried income, take-home pay of ₹40,000+ a month and a credit score from 600.
Six credit situations, six different routes
| Your situation | What a lender sees | Best route | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin file (little or no credit history) | Not bad, just unknown | A small first loan or secured card, or a lender that uses salary data. See loans without a CIBIL history. | Taking several small app loans “to build a score” |
| Maxed-out credit card | High utilisation, stretched budget | Pay the card below about 30% of the limit for two statements, then apply | A new loan to pay the card while still spending on it |
| A few late EMIs, now paying on time | A rough patch that may be over | A lender that reads the full report, with a short explanation of what happened | Lenders that decline on an automated cut-off |
| Settled or written-off account | A lender took a loss | Convert the settlement to “closed” where possible, wait for clean months, add a co-applicant | Anyone promising to “remove” a settlement for a fee |
| Several payday or app loans | Credit hunger and rollover risk | Consolidate into one EMI with SmartSwitch | Another app loan to repay the last one |
| Old default, years ago | History, if recent behaviour is clean | Get NOCs, fix report errors, apply with proof of recent on-time payments | Assuming you are “blacklisted”; there is no such list |
The personal loan options open to you
NBFC personal loan with full-report review
Some NBFCs, including Omozing, consider salaried applicants with scores from 600 and have a credit officer read the whole report. Unsecured, fixed EMIs, rates disclosed in the KFS. Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year.
Loan with a co-applicant
A spouse, parent, sibling or friend with a good score and steady income adds strength. See how a co-applicant strengthens your application.
Loan against a fixed deposit or gold
Secured by an asset, so the score matters less and rates are lower. Useful if you have the asset and need a modest amount.
Employer salary advance
Often free or cheap, and it doesn’t touch your credit report. Ask HR before you look anywhere else.
Payday and short-term app loans
Fast but expensive, repaid in one lump sum. Rolled over, they deepen the problem. Read what payday loans really cost.
Unregulated apps and “agents”
If an app can’t name its RBI-registered lender, or an agent wants a fee before approval, walk away. Check apps in the RBI directory of digital lending apps.
Why the right route matters: one borrower, two paths
Consider an illustrative profile, not a real customer: a salaried borrower with a score of 640 who needs ₹75,000 and already has two app loans.
Path A: another app loan
Three app loans totalling ₹75,000, rolled over monthly at a 10% fee plus 1% a day, cost about ₹30,000 a month and the principal never falls. The score keeps sliding as enquiries and accounts pile up.
Path B: consolidate, then repay
One loan clears the apps, and one EMI of about ₹7,750 for 12 months (illustration: 2% a month flat plus a 4% fee) ends the cycle. That keeps roughly ₹3.4 lakh in the borrower’s pocket over a year, and on-time EMIs start rebuilding the score.
Illustrative figures. Actual rates, fees and APR are in each lender’s Key Fact Statement. SmartSwitch pricing is shown only in your KFS.
From loan to financial freedom: the next 12 months
Month 0: borrow once, for the right reason
One loan with a fixed EMI and an end date. No new app loans alongside it.
Months 1–3: automate and protect
Set up auto-debit for every EMI and card bill. A single missed payment now undoes months of progress.
Months 3–6: build a small buffer
Even ₹1,000–₹2,000 a month set aside means the next emergency doesn’t send you back to an app.
Months 6–12: check your report and step up
Pull your report from each bureau, dispute any errors via our dispute guide, and watch the score respond to a year of on-time EMIs. A better score means cheaper credit next time.
Money freedom with a poor score isn’t about finding any loan. It is about choosing the one loan that ends the problem.
Salaried with a score from 600?
Omozing considers salaried applicants with take-home pay of ₹40,000+ and a credit score from 600. A credit officer reads your full report. Two documents, and the full cost is in the KFS before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a personal loan with a poor credit score in India?
Often, yes. Some NBFCs consider scores from about 600, especially for salaried borrowers with steady income and clean recent months. Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600 and take-home pay of ₹40,000 or more.
Which personal loan option is best with bad credit?
It depends on why your score is low. If you have several app loans, consolidation usually helps most. If a payment is overdue, clear it first. If your file is thin, start small. If your score is from 600 and you are salaried, an NBFC that reads the full report is a good fit.
Is a loan against gold or a fixed deposit better with a low score?
It can be cheaper and easier to get because it is secured, but it needs an asset you are willing to pledge. An unsecured personal loan avoids pledging anything.
Will a co-applicant improve my chances?
Yes. A co-applicant with a good score and steady income adds repayment strength. Omozing accepts spouses, family members and friends as co-applicants.
Should I take a payday loan if my score is poor?
Only for a one-off emergency you can repay in full from your next salary. Rolled over, payday loans become very expensive and usually lower your score further.
Is there a CIBIL blacklist?
No. Credit bureaus record your history; they do not blacklist anyone. Each lender decides based on your report and its own policy.
