Can I get compensation if my credit report error isn’t fixed in 30 days?

Yes. Under the RBI’s framework, in force since 26 April 2024, a complaint about an error on your credit report has to be resolved within 30 days: the lender gets 21 days and the credit bureau 9. If it takes longer, you are owed ₹100 for every calendar day of delay, paid by whichever side caused the delay. The money goes to the bank account you give, within 5 working days of the complaint being resolved. It compensates for delay only, not for an outcome you disagree with.

How the 30-day clock works

When you raise a dispute with a bureau (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark), the bureau passes it to the lender that reported the data. The lender has 21 days to check its records and tell the bureau whether to correct the entry. The bureau then has 9 days to update your report and close the complaint. Together that is 30 days. Every calendar day beyond that, weekends included, earns ₹100.

An illustrative dispute that ran 14 days late

Dispute raised 5 June 2026 · resolved 19 July 2026 (day 44) Lender: 21 days Bureau: 9 days Delay: 14 days Day 0 Day 21 Day 30 (5 July) Day 44 14 × ₹100 = ₹1,400 Owed for the delay, paid within 5 working days

An illustrative example, not a real case. The blue bars are the time each side is allowed; the red bar is the extra time taken, which in this example was the lender’s. Drawn to scale: each day is the same width.

A worked example, computed

Say you spot a closed loan still shown as overdue and raise a dispute on 5 June 2026. Thirty days later is 5 July, the deadline. The lender takes 35 days to confirm its mistake instead of 21, and the bureau then updates your report within its 9 days, so the complaint closes on 19 July, day 44.

44 daysTotal time from complaint to resolution
14 daysDelay beyond the 30-day limit (5 July to 19 July)
₹1,400Compensation: 14 days × ₹100, paid by the lender, which caused the delay

The same rule scales simply. Use this table to see what a longer delay is worth:

Days resolved after the 30-day limitCompensation at ₹100 a day
7 days₹700
14 days₹1,400
30 days₹3,000
60 days₹6,000

Compensation is due automatically once the complaint is resolved late, but it helps to know your dates. If you still have to raise the dispute, our dispute guide walks through each bureau’s process.

How to make sure you are paid

  1. Keep your complaint reference and date

Save the acknowledgement email or screenshot from the bureau. Day 0 is the date your complaint was lodged.

  2. Give a bank account

Compensation is paid to the account you provide. Share it with the bureau or lender if they ask, and only through their official channels.

  3. Check after resolution

Count the calendar days. If the complaint closed after day 30 and nothing arrives within 5 working days, write to the lender’s or bureau’s grievance officer with your dates.

  4. Escalate if ignored

If the lender or bureau doesn’t respond, you can complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

What the ₹100 a day doesn’t cover

What most people get wrong: they assume the 30 days starts when they first noticed the error or called the lender’s helpline. It starts when the complaint is lodged with the bureau or lender. Raise it in writing, keep the reference number, and the clock is on your side.

Frequently asked questions

How much compensation do I get for a delayed credit report correction?

₹100 for each calendar day beyond the 30-day limit. For example, a complaint resolved 14 days late earns ₹1,400.

Who pays the compensation, the bank or CIBIL?

Whoever caused the delay. If the lender took longer than its 21 days, the lender pays; if the bureau took longer than its 9 days, the bureau pays.

When will I receive the money?

Within 5 working days of the complaint being resolved, to the bank account you provide.

Do I get compensation if my dispute is rejected?

Not for the rejection itself. Compensation applies only if the complaint took longer than 30 days to resolve, whatever the outcome.

What if I’m not paid?

Write to the grievance officer of the lender or bureau with your complaint date and resolution date. If that fails, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
