Is a “KYC update” or “account blocked” SMS genuine?

Almost never, if it comes with a link, a phone number or a deadline. Banks do sometimes need you to update KYC, but they don’t ask you to send PAN or Aadhaar through an SMS link, and they never ask for your OTP. The “account blocked today” line exists to rush you. Don’t tap the link or call the number in the message. Open your bank’s official app, or its website (Indian bank sites now end in .bank.in), or visit the branch, and check there.

A KYC scam SMS, taken apart

These messages are short, so every line has a job. Here is a made-up example with six warning signs marked. “Your Bank” is a placeholder, not a real bank, and the numbers and link are invented.

A made-up example. “Your Bank”, the phone numbers and the link are invented. Real scam texts also arrive by WhatsApp and email, and use names of real banks, wallets and telecom companies.

The same scam, in different clothes

“KYC expired, account blocked”

The classic. Leads to a fake login page that captures your net-banking password and OTP.

“PAN not updated, card suspended”

Same trick with a different trigger. The form asks for card number, expiry and CVV.

“Download our KYC app”

An .apk file that can read your SMS, including OTPs. Install apps only from your phone’s official store.

“Our officer will call you”

A caller “helps” you complete KYC and asks for the OTP that arrives. That OTP is approving a payment or a login.

What most people get wrong: they think entering details on a page is safe as long as they don’t share the OTP out loud. A fake KYC page can ask for the OTP in a form field, and typing it there gives the scammer the same access as reading it out. If you didn’t start the transaction, an OTP should never leave your phone.

What to do with one

  1. Don’t tap, don’t call back

Leave the link and the number alone. If you’re worried, open your bank’s app or call the number on your card.

  2. Report it

Report the SMS under “Chakshu” on the Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in), even though you lost nothing. Then delete it.

  3. If you already entered details

Call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in at once, and block your card or net banking through your bank. RBI rules limit your liability for unauthorised transactions when you report quickly. See the first-hour checklist.

  4. If you sent PAN or Aadhaar

Lock your Aadhaar biometrics through UIDAI (myAadhaar or mAadhaar), and watch bureau alerts for enquiries you didn’t make. Can someone take a loan on your PAN?

Worried your details are already being misused?

An enquiry or loan you don’t recognise on your credit report can be disputed for free.

Frequently asked questions

Can my bank account really be blocked for pending KYC?

A bank can restrict an account if KYC is long overdue, but it tells you through official channels and lets you update in its app, on its website or at the branch, never through a texted link.

How can I tell if a bank link is genuine?

Indian banks have moved their websites to addresses ending in .bank.in. Even so, the safest habit is to type the address or open the bank’s app yourself.

I clicked the link but didn’t enter anything. Am I safe?

Usually, yes. Close the page, don’t install anything it offers, and watch your bank messages for the next few days.

Will my bank ever ask for my OTP on a call?

No. Genuine banks, lenders and credit bureaus never ask for your OTP, PIN, CVV or password.

Where do I report a KYC scam SMS?

Report it under “Chakshu” on Sanchar Saathi. If money was taken or you shared an OTP, call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in.

Next questions people ask:

I clicked a phishing link or shared my OTP. What do I do now? Is this call or message really from CIBIL or Experian? Can phishing or identity fraud hurt my credit score?
