Does closing a credit card hurt my CIBIL score?

It can, but not for the reason most people think. The card’s history doesn’t vanish: a closed card stays on your report, and a clean record keeps counting in your favour. The usual damage comes from losing its credit limit. If you keep spending the same amount on fewer cards, your utilisation rises, and high utilisation weighs on your score. Close a card with no balance, few years of history and a small limit, and the effect is usually small; close your oldest, biggest card while you carry balances elsewhere, and it can be noticeable.

What closing one card does to your utilisation

Utilisation is the share of your total card limit that you are using, based on the balances your issuers report. Lenders like to see it under about 30%. Take an illustrative profile: two cards, a ₹1,00,000 limit and a ₹50,000 limit, with ₹30,000 of spending a month.

An illustrative profile, not a real customer. Bars are drawn to scale (100% = 400px). Utilisation = ₹30,000 spend ÷ total limit of the cards still open.

The same decision has very different results depending on which card goes. Closing the smaller card takes this person from 20% to 30%, still within the comfortable zone. Closing the larger one triples utilisation to 60%. If you must close one, close the card with the smaller limit, or cut your spending before you close.

What most people get wrong: they think closing a card wipes its history, good or bad. It doesn’t. Bureaus keep at least seven years of loan history, so a card with late payments still shows them after closure, and a card paid on time for years still counts for you. Closing a card is not a way to clean a report.

When closing a card makes sense

Reasonable to close

A card with an annual fee you don’t recover, a duplicate card you never use, a card you overspend on, or a card from a lender whose service you can’t rely on.

Think twice

Your oldest card, your highest limit, or any card when you plan to apply for a loan in the next few months, especially if you carry balances on other cards.

Spending discipline matters more than a few points. If a card keeps pulling you into paying only the minimum, closing it may protect your score over time, because paying only the minimum due leaves utilisation high and interest building. If the fee is the issue, ask the issuer whether it can move you to a no-fee variant and keep the account, and its limit, open.

How to close a card cleanly

Lenders now report four times a month, so a closed card usually shows correctly within a few weeks. If it still shows as open or with a balance after about a month, follow the steps in my closed account still shows as active and raise a dispute with your closure letter attached.

If you are about to apply for a personal loan, leave card closures until afterwards, unless the card’s fee or temptation is costing you real money. A lender will look at your utilisation on the report it pulls. If you would rather simplify now, close the small, newer card, keep the older, larger one, and pay balances down so utilisation stays under 30%. More on how many cards are too many.

Thinking about a loan after tidying up your cards?

Omozing considers salaried applicants with a score from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000 or more. A credit officer reads your full report.

Frequently asked questions

Will closing an unused credit card lower my score?

It can raise your utilisation because your total limit shrinks. If you carry little or no balance on other cards, the effect is usually small.

Does a closed credit card disappear from my credit report?

No. It stays on your report as a closed account. Bureaus hold at least seven years of history, and a good repayment record keeps helping you.

Should I close my oldest credit card?

Usually not. An old card with a clean record and a good limit supports both your history and your utilisation. Close a newer or smaller card if you need to.

Can I close a credit card with an outstanding balance?

You need to clear the dues, including any running EMI conversions. Unpaid dues stay on your report and can turn into late payments.

How long after closing will my report update?

Lenders report four times a month, so it usually shows within a few weeks. If it hasn’t changed after about a month, raise a dispute.
