“Low salary” means different things to different lenders. A bank may want ₹25,000 a month for its regular personal loan; another lender may set its bar at ₹15,000, and Omozing at ₹40,000 take-home. This guide shows how lenders turn your salary into a loan amount, what you can realistically expect at different salary levels, and what to do if your income is below a lender’s cut-off.
How lenders decide how much you can borrow
Lenders don’t start with the loan you want; they start with the EMI you can afford. The key measure is FOIR (fixed obligations to income ratio): the share of your monthly take-home pay that goes on EMIs, including the new one.
The lender then works backwards from that EMI, using its rate and tenure, to the maximum loan. For example, SBI states an EMI-to-income limit of up to 65% for its salary-account personal loan; see our SBI personal loan guide. Other lenders are stricter, especially at lower incomes, because a family on ₹20,000 a month has less room for surprises than one on ₹1 lakh.
How much loan can you get on your salary?
Illustrative maximum loan by take-home salary (FOIR 50%, no existing EMIs)
Illustrative: half of take-home pay available for EMI, 12% a year reducing balance, 36 months, no other loans, before fees. At 40% FOIR the amounts are about a fifth lower. Not an offer; each lender sets its own minimum salary, FOIR, rate and tenure.
Two things shrink these numbers quickly:
- Existing EMIs. On ₹50,000 take-home with a ₹10,000 bike or phone EMI, the room at 50% FOIR falls from ₹25,000 to ₹15,000, and the illustrative maximum from about ₹7.5 lakh to about ₹4.5 lakh.
- Shorter tenure. Over 24 months instead of 36, the same ₹25,000 salary supports about ₹2.66 lakh instead of ₹3.76 lakh.
What to expect at different salary levels
| Take-home a month | What is realistic | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Below ₹15,000 | Small amounts, short tenure; many lenders won’t consider it | Employer salary advance, your salary bank, secured options such as a gold loan |
| ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 | Modest loans, often a few thousand to around ₹2–3 lakh | Your salary bank, NBFCs with lower salary cut-offs, a co-applicant |
| ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 | Up to a few lakh with a clean credit report | Banks (often with a salary account there) and NBFCs |
| ₹40,000 and above | Larger amounts, more lenders, better negotiating power | Banks, NBFCs including Omozing |

A word on “₹15,000 personal loan” searches: if you need ₹15,000 for a few weeks, an instant app loan can look tempting, but small app loans often carry high fees and daily interest. How to borrow more, or more cheaply, on a modest salary
Clear or close small loans first
Every EMI you remove frees FOIR room. Closing a ₹3,000 EMI can add more than ₹90,000 to what you qualify for over three years.
Add an earning co-applicant
A spouse, parent or sibling with income can be added at lenders that allow it, combining incomes for FOIR. See how a co-applicant strengthens your application.
Show all your income
Regular allowances, rental income or a documented side income may count with some lenders. Bank statements are the strongest proof.
Choose a sensible tenure
A longer tenure lowers the EMI and raises eligibility, but costs more interest. Pick the shortest tenure you can comfortably afford.
Protect your credit score
On a lower income, a clean report counts for even more. Pay every EMI and card bill on time, and avoid several applications in a short period. If your score is low, see personal loans with a CIBIL score from 600.
Apply where your salary is credited
Your salary bank can see your income history and may offer pre-approved amounts or better terms.
Already repaying a loan on a low salary?
Part-prepay with bonuses
On a reducing-balance loan, any prepayment cuts future interest. Check prepayment charges first.
Balance transfer
If your credit profile has improved, another lender may refinance at a lower rate. Weigh the new processing fee against the saving.
Consolidate costly debt
Several app loans or card balances can be combined into one EMI. SmartSwitch is built for exactly this.
Talk to your lender early
If the EMI is becoming hard to pay, ask about restructuring before you miss a payment, not after.
Where Omozing fits
Omozing, our own product, is designed for salaried people with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 a month or more. If that is you, we lend up to ₹25 lakh for 3 to 36 months, unsecured, with rates starting from 11% a year and a processing fee of 3%–7% plus GST. We consider credit scores from 600, ask for just two documents (a 6-month salary-account bank statement and your latest salary slip), and a credit officer reads your full report rather than relying only on an automated cut-off. Co-applicants, including a spouse, family member or friend, are welcome. The exact rate, fees and APR are in the Key Fact Statement before you sign, and we never ask for an upfront fee before approval.
If your take-home is below ₹40,000, we are honestly not the right lender today; the steps above, your salary bank or a co-applicant are better routes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a personal loan with a low salary?
Yes, from lenders whose minimum salary you meet. The amount depends on how much EMI your income can carry after existing EMIs, along with your credit score and employer.
How much personal loan can I get on a ₹25,000 salary?
As an illustration, if half your take-home can go to EMI and you have no other loans, about ₹3.75 lakh over 36 months at 12% a year. Actual amounts depend on the lender’s FOIR, rate and tenure.
Can I get a personal loan on a ₹15,000 salary?
Some lenders consider it, usually for smaller amounts and shorter tenures. A salary advance from your employer, your salary bank or a secured loan may be easier and cheaper.
What is FOIR in a personal loan?
Fixed obligations to income ratio: the share of your take-home pay going to EMIs, including the new loan. Many lenders cap it at roughly 40% to 60%.
Does a co-applicant help if my salary is low?
Yes, at lenders that accept co-applicants. Their income can be considered alongside yours, which can raise the amount you qualify for. They share responsibility for repayment.
What is Omozing’s minimum salary for a personal loan?
A take-home salary of ₹40,000 a month or more, with a credit score from 600 and two documents: a 6-month salary-account statement and your latest salary slip.
