EMI on a ₹1 lakh personal loan

In short: At 11% a year, a ₹1 lakh personal loan costs about ₹17,205 a month over 6 months, ₹8,838 over 12 months or ₹4,661 over 24 months. Total interest rises from ₹3,233 to ₹6,058 to ₹11,859. On a loan this small, the one-time processing fee is a large part of the cost, and on a 6-month tenure it can be more than the interest itself. Compare lenders on the APR in the Key Fact Statement, not the headline rate.

Total interest you pay on ₹1 lakh

Interest rate6 months12 months24 months
11%₹3,233₹6,058₹11,859
14%₹4,123₹7,745₹15,231
18%₹5,315₹10,016₹19,818
22%₹6,514₹12,313₹24,508

On a small loan the rate matters less than you might expect: at 12 months, the gap between 11% and 14% is about ₹141 a month. The tenure matters more. Moving from 24 months to 12 at 11% saves ₹5,801 in interest; moving from 12 to 6 saves another ₹2,825.

Why the fee matters more on a small loan

The processing fee is charged once, whatever the tenure. At Omozing it is 3%–7% plus GST. On ₹1 lakh, a 3% fee is ₹3,000 plus ₹540 GST, so about ₹96,460 reaches your account; at 7% the fee is ₹7,000 plus ₹1,260 GST and you would receive about ₹91,740. Over 6 months, ₹3,540 in fees is more than the ₹3,233 of interest, which is why the APR, the yearly cost including fees, can be far above the headline rate on a short loan.

At 11% with a 3% fee: what ₹1 lakh really costs

Interest Fee + GST (₹3,540) ₹6,7736 months · APR ~23.7% ₹9,59812 months · APR ~17.9% ₹15,39924 months · APR ~14.6%

Illustrative: assumes an 11% rate, a 3% fee plus 18% GST deducted at disbursal and no other charges. APR is approximate, worked out from the amount received and the EMIs paid. Your actual APR is in the Key Fact Statement.

What most people get wrong: they compare two small loans by interest rate alone. At 11% with a 3% fee, a 6-month ₹1 lakh loan has an APR of roughly 24%. The shorter tenure still costs fewer rupees in total (₹6,773 against ₹15,399 over 24 months), but when you compare lenders for the same tenure, the fee can decide which is cheaper.

Which tenure fits your salary

43%Share of a ₹40,000 take-home used by the 6-month EMI of ₹17,205
22%Share used by the 12-month EMI of ₹8,838
12%Share used by the 24-month EMI of ₹4,661

Many lenders cap FOIR, the share of take-home going on all EMIs, at around 50%. With no other loans, all three tenures fit a ₹40,000 salary. Add ₹8,000 of existing EMIs and the 6-month option takes you to about 63%, while 12 months stays near 42%. How FOIR works.
