Omozing Answers › Credit scores and bureaus
My loan was rejected because of my CIBIL score. What now?
In short: Don’t apply anywhere else this week. Each new application adds a hard enquiry and makes the next lender more cautious. First get your full credit report and find the real reason: often it is a recent late payment, too many open app loans, an error on the report or EMIs that take up too much of your salary. Fix that one thing, wait for it to show on your report (about one to two weeks under the 2026 reporting rules), then apply to a single lender whose published criteria you clearly meet.

See it play out: Aarav asks Meera from our credit team
An illustrative conversation. Aarav is a made-up borrower, not a real customer. Meera speaks for the Omozing credit team.
AAaravTwo apps rejected me yesterday. My score is 641. Should I try a few more tonight? One of them has to say yes.
MMeeraPlease don’t. Every application lets the lender pull your report, and a run of enquiries in one week tells the next lender you’re being turned down everywhere. Tonight’s ten tries could make next month’s one real chance harder.
AAaravBut 641 isn’t even that bad, is it?
MMeeraIt isn’t a disaster. Plenty of lenders, including us, start from 600. But the number is a summary. The rejection usually comes from something specific behind it. Have you downloaded your full report?
AAaravNo, I only saw the score in an app.
MMeeraStart there. You get one free full report from each bureau every year, and checking your own report doesn’t hurt your score. Look for three things: any payment marked late in the last six months, how many loans are open, and anything you don’t recognise.
AAarav…Okay. There’s a ₹6,000 app loan from March that shows 30 days overdue. I’m sure I paid it.
MMeeraThat’s very likely your rejection. If you paid it, get the payment proof or the no-dues certificate and raise a dispute with the bureau. Disputes have to be resolved within 30 days. If you still owe it, pay it today and get the certificate.
AAaravAnd then apply again?
MMeeraOnce the report shows it fixed. With lenders now reporting four times a month, that’s usually one to two weeks. Then pick one lender whose published criteria you clearly meet, and apply once.
The usual reasons behind a “low score” rejection
A recent late payment
Even one EMI 30 days late in the last few months weighs heavily. Lenders look at recent behaviour first.
Too many open loans
Four or five small app loans signal stretched cash flow, even if each is paid on time. SmartSwitch can replace them with one EMI.
Too many recent applications
A cluster of hard enquiries reads as credit hunger. How enquiries work.
EMIs eat too much of your salary
Lenders check FOIR, the share of your income already going on EMIs. Above roughly half, many will decline. FOIR explained.
An error on your report
A loan you closed still shown as open, or one that isn’t yours. These are fixable for free. Dispute guide.
Your next 30 days
Day 1: stop applying. Download your full report from CIBIL and at least one other bureau.
Days 2–5: find the reason. Dispute errors; pay or settle anything genuinely overdue and collect the no-dues certificate.
Days 5–20: let it update. Lenders report on the 9th, 16th and 23rd and at month-end. Make every payment on time.
Days 20–30: check the report again, then apply once to a lender whose criteria you meet.
Score 600 or more and take-home ₹40,000 or more?
A credit officer reads your full report, not just the number, and co-applicants are welcome.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do after my loan is rejected for a low CIBIL score?
Stop applying, download your full credit report, find the specific reason (a late payment, too many open loans, high EMIs or an error), fix it, wait for the report to update, then apply once to a lender whose criteria you meet.
How long should I wait to reapply after a rejection?
Wait until the cause is fixed and shows on your report. With lenders reporting four times a month from July 2026, that is often one to two weeks for a simple fix, longer if you need a run of on-time payments.
Does a loan rejection lower my CIBIL score?
The rejection itself isn’t recorded, but the hard enquiry from the application is. Many applications in a short period can lower your score.
Can I get a personal loan with a 640 CIBIL score?
Yes, with some lenders. Omozing considers salaried applicants from a score of 600 with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, after a credit officer reviews the full report.
Will the lender tell me why I was rejected?
Ask them. Many lenders share the main reason, and your credit report usually shows it anyway.
