Lenders resolve clear, documented complaints faster, and the RBI will only take up your case if you complained to the lender first, in writing. These templates save you the blank-page problem. Copy one, replace everything in [square brackets], and delete what doesn’t apply. For the full escalation path, read how to complain about a lender in India, and for the rights behind each letter, our borrower rights checklist.
Five rules before you send anything
Send it to the right person
The grievance redressal officer’s name and email are on the lender’s website, app and Key Fact Statement. Address the lender’s registered name, not just the app brand.
One issue per letter
Mixing a refund, a recovery complaint and a credit report error in one email slows everything down.
Ask for something specific
“Refund ₹2,950 charged on 4 October” works. “Please look into this” doesn’t.
Attach proof
KFS, statement, screenshots, call log with dates and times. Never send your full card number, PIN, OTP or passwords.
Keep the trail
Save the sent email and the complaint reference number. You’ll need both for the RBI.
How long each side has to reply
Response time limits that work in your favour
As of October 2026: RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026; RBI credit information compensation framework (2023); DPDP Rules, 2025 (data grievance limit applies from 13 May 2027). Some fraud-related categories follow longer timelines.

Escalating to the RBI: the summary to paste
If the lender doesn’t resolve it in 30 days, or you’re unhappy with the reply, file on cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days. The form asks for a short description. Use this structure:
Filing is free, and the RBI contact centre on 14448 can help. If the app has no regulated lender behind it, report it on the RBI’s Sachet portal instead.
Tired of complaining to five loan apps?
SmartSwitch replaces several short-term app loans with one Omozing loan and one EMI. The money goes to your own account, you close each app loan, and you deal with one regulated lender.
Frequently asked questions
Who should I send a loan complaint letter to?
The lender’s grievance redressal officer. Their name and contact details must be on the lender’s website, app and Key Fact Statement. Address the lender’s registered name, not just the app brand.
Should I complain by email or by post?
Email or the lender’s online grievance form is fine and creates a dated record. The RBI asks for proof that you complained in writing, so avoid phone-only complaints.
What if the lender doesn’t reply to my letter?
If there is no reply within 30 days, or the reply doesn’t resolve the issue, you can file with the RBI on cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days. Filing is free.
Can I use these templates for a loan app?
Yes, if a regulated bank or NBFC is behind the app. Address the letter to the lender named in your loan agreement and copy the app’s grievance officer.
Should I mention the RBI in my complaint letter?
You can mention the rule you rely on, such as the Key Fact Statement or credit information timelines, in one line. Keep the tone factual; threats don’t speed things up.
What personal details should I leave out?
Never include your full card number, CVV, PIN, OTP or passwords. Your loan account number, registered mobile and the last four characters of your PAN are usually enough.
