Two scores, not one
When people say “business loan credit score”, they usually mean one of two different things. Knowing which one a lender is reading, and why, is the first step to strengthening your application.
Personal credit score
- Belongs to you, the individual: proprietor, partner, director or guarantor.
- Range 300–900, from TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark.
- Built from your personal loans, cards, home and vehicle loans.
- Read for almost every small-business loan, whatever the entity type.
Business (commercial) credit report
- Belongs to the entity: a partnership firm, LLP or company.
- Built from loans, overdrafts and credit facilities taken in the firm’s name.
- At CIBIL, eligible MSMEs get a CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR) from 1 to 10; other bureaus have their own commercial reports and scores.
- Only exists once the business has borrowed in its own name.
How the CIBIL MSME Rank reads
The CMR is a relative risk rank: it estimates how likely a business is to default compared with other businesses. Unlike a personal score, lower is better.
CIBIL MSME Rank: 1 is the lowest risk, 10 the highest
Indicative shading only. Each lender sets its own acceptable ranks, and other bureaus use different scales for commercial scores.
A business that has never borrowed in its own name usually has no CMR. That isn’t a black mark; it simply means lenders will lean more on the owners’ personal scores, the bank statement and the GST and income-tax records.
Which score the lender checks, by type of business
| Business type | Personal score | Commercial report | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietorship | The main score checked | Usually none; the business and owner are legally the same | Your personal credit habits are your business credit |
| Partnership firm | Checked for each partner | Checked if the firm has borrowed | One partner’s poor record can hold back the firm |
| LLP | Checked for designated partners | Checked if the LLP has borrowed | Build a clean record in the LLP’s name early |
| Private limited company | Checked for directors and guarantors | Checked, along with financial statements | Both matter; directors often give personal guarantees |
| New business or startup | Often the deciding factor | Thin or none | Founders’ personal records carry the weight; see startup business loans |
For most small businesses in India, the owner’s personal credit is the business’s credit.
What counts as a good score for a business loan?
There is no single official cut-off. Each bank and NBFC sets its own, and it varies by product. As a broad guide:
- Personal score: many banks look for the 700s and above for unsecured business loans. Lower scores narrow the options but don’t always close them, especially with security, a strong bank statement or a co-applicant.
- Commercial rank: ranks at the low-risk end of the scale open the widest choice of lenders and the best terms. Higher-risk ranks usually mean secured or scheme-backed products.
- The report behind the number: a recent overdue, a “settled” or “written off” status, or a string of enquiries weighs heavily on any business loan, whatever the score says.

What business lenders weigh besides the score
This is why two businesses with the same score can get very different offers. A strong GST trail can support a loan even where income-tax returns understate turnover; see GST surrogate business loans for how that works.
How to build a stronger business credit profile
Keep personal and business money apart
Run the business through its own current account. Clean, separate statements make your turnover easy to read.
Protect your personal score
Pay every personal EMI and card bill on time and keep card balances low. For small businesses, this is often the most important number.
Borrow something small in the business’s name
A modest overdraft, equipment loan or business card, repaid on time, starts the firm’s own credit history.
File GST and ITRs on time, every time
Lenders read these as proof of real, consistent business. Gaps and late filings raise questions.
Avoid cheque and ECS bounces
Bounces show up in bank statement analysis and can hurt both your credit and your standing with lenders. See how a cheque bounce affects your CIBIL.
Check both reports every year
Pull your personal report (one free full report per bureau each calendar year) and the firm’s commercial report. Dispute any error before you apply.
Apply selectively
Choose lenders whose criteria you meet. Several applications in a short time add enquiries to every report involved.
Compare the business loan options that fit your profile
Our guides explain which loan type suits your vintage, turnover and credit record, from working capital to equipment and GST-based loans. Omozing itself currently lends to salaried individuals; for business borrowing, compare lenders carefully.
Frequently asked questions
Which credit score is checked for a business loan in India?
Usually the owners’ personal credit scores, and for businesses that have borrowed in their own name, the business’s commercial credit report. At CIBIL, eligible MSMEs receive a CIBIL MSME Rank from 1 to 10.
What is a CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR)?
It is CIBIL’s risk rank for eligible micro, small and medium businesses, on a scale of 1 to 10. A rank of 1 indicates the lowest risk of default and 10 the highest.
Does a sole proprietor have a separate business credit score?
Usually not. A proprietorship and its owner are the same legal person, so lenders rely mainly on the proprietor’s personal credit score and report, along with business bank statements and tax filings.
What is a good personal credit score for a business loan?
There is no single cut-off; each lender sets its own. Many banks look for scores in the 700s and above for unsecured business loans, while secured and scheme-backed loans can be more flexible.
Can my personal loans affect my business loan application?
Yes. Your personal EMIs reduce the income available to repay a new loan, and any late payments on them lower the personal score that business lenders check.
How can a new business build credit?
Keep a separate current account, file GST and ITRs on time, protect the founders’ personal scores, and start with a small facility in the business’s name that you repay on time.
