Omozing Answers › Credit scores and bureaus

Why is my score different at CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF?

In short: Because they are four separate companies, each with its own copy of your data and its own scoring model. TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark all use the 300–900 range, but they receive and process lender updates on their own timelines, may match accounts to you slightly differently, and weigh things in their own way. A gap of a few dozen points is normal. A large gap usually means one report has an error or an account the others don’t, and that is worth checking.

What a normal spread looks like

One borrower, four bureaus (illustrative)

TransUnion CIBIL 712 Experian 694 Equifax 728 CRIF High Mark 703 600650700750800 Shaded: 694 to 728, a 34-point spread

An illustrative profile, not a real customer. The scale is zoomed to 600–800 so the gaps are visible. A spread like this, all within one band, is normal.

Five reasons the numbers differ

Different scoring models

Each bureau builds its own model. They look at similar things, such as repayment record, card use, history length and recent applications, but weigh them in their own way.

Updates land at different times

Lenders now report four times a month, but each bureau processes data on its own timeline. Pull two reports on the same day and one may already show last week’s payment.

Matching differences

Bureaus link accounts to you using your name, PAN, date of birth and contact details. A spelling variation or old address can leave an account attached at one bureau and missing at another.

An error at one bureau

A closed loan shown as open, or a payment marked late in error, may sit in just one report. That alone can explain a big gap.

Different dates

A score from an app may be weeks old, while another is fresh. Always compare scores pulled at around the same time.

What most people get wrong: they assume CIBIL is the “real” score and the others don’t count. Lenders can use any of the four bureaus, and many check more than one. A clean CIBIL report doesn’t help if the Experian report a lender pulls carries an error.

When a gap is worth investigating

Scores that sit in the same band, like the example above, need no action. Look closer when one score is in a clearly different band from the rest, or when one bureau shows an account the others don’t. Here is a quick way to find the cause:

  1. Get the full reports, not just the scores

You are entitled to one free full report from each bureau every calendar year, and checking your own report never lowers your score. How to get them free.

  2. Line up the accounts

List every loan and card from each report. Look for one that appears in only one report, or appears with a different status or balance.

  3. Compare the last 12 months of payments

A single month marked late at one bureau but not the others is a classic error.

  4. Dispute with the bureau that is wrong

Raise the dispute with that bureau, with proof. Disputes must be resolved within 30 days, free of charge. How to raise a dispute.

Which score will a lender see?

Whichever bureau or bureaus it pulls when you apply. You usually won’t know in advance, which is the best reason to keep all four reports accurate. At Omozing, a credit officer reads your full report rather than deciding on the number alone, so a small gap between bureaus matters far less than what the report actually says about your last year of repayments. We consider salaried applicants with a score from 600 and take-home of ₹40,000 or more.

Frequently asked questions

Which credit score is most accurate in India?

None is more correct than the others. Each bureau scores the data it holds with its own model; what matters is that each report is accurate.

Is a 30-point difference between CIBIL and Experian normal?

Yes. Gaps of a few dozen points are common because of different models and update timing. A much larger gap is worth checking for an error.

Do banks only check CIBIL?

No. Lenders can use any of the four bureaus, and many check more than one.

Why does my score differ between two apps?

The apps may use different bureaus, or the scores may have been pulled on different dates. Compare the bureau name and date shown with each score.

If I fix an error at CIBIL, will Experian update too?

Not necessarily. Each bureau keeps its own records, so check every report and dispute the error with each bureau that shows it.
