Illustrative layout. Section names vary slightly between bureaus. The blue sections drive the score; personal and contact details are used to match accounts to you.
| Credit score | Credit report | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | One number, 300–900 | A detailed record, often several pages |
| What it tells you | Your overall standing at a glance | Exactly why your standing is what it is |
| Where errors show | Never directly; a wrong entry just drags the number | Line by line: a loan you closed shown open, a payment marked late |
| How to get it | Many apps and bank sites show it free | One free full report per bureau every calendar year, plus paid options |
| What a lender does with it | Often a first filter | Reads it to decide yes or no, the amount and the rate |
| Can you dispute it? | No, you can’t dispute a number | Yes, any inaccurate entry, free of charge |
A score tells you that something is pulling you down; only the report tells you what. Suppose your score drops from 712 to 668. The number gives no reason. The report might show a card bill marked 30 days late, a new loan you didn’t take, or a closed app loan still listed as open with a balance. Each has a different fix, and two of those three are errors you can correct for free through a bureau dispute. Disputes must be resolved within 30 days.
The report also shows you what a lender will see. A credit officer reading it looks past the headline number to recent payments, the number of open loans and recent applications. If you have only ever looked at the score in an app, download the full report before you apply anywhere. How to read your report, section by section.
You are entitled to one free full report from each bureau every calendar year. Spreading them across the year gives you a check every few months.
Look for loans or cards you don’t recognise, and enquiries from lenders you never applied to.
Anything you repaid in full should say closed, with a zero balance.
Raise disputes with the bureau and confirm the correction appears in the report, not just the score.
A credit officer reads your full report, not just the number. Salaried applicants from a score of 600.
No. The report is the full record of your loans, cards and repayments; the score is a single number calculated from it.
Both. Many use the score as a first filter, then read the report to decide whether to lend, how much and at what rate.
The score is calculated from the report, so if every entry is accurate the score reflects it. Different bureaus can still give different numbers.
You can get one free full credit report from each of the four bureaus every calendar year.
No. Checking your own report or score is a soft enquiry and has no effect.
