Why was my loan rejected despite a 750 score?

In short: Because a score is only one of several checks. A 750 tells a lender you have repaid well in the past; it says nothing about whether the new EMI fits your salary today. The most common reasons for a rejection at 750 or above are EMIs already taking up too much of your take-home (a high FOIR), income or employment that doesn’t meet that lender’s criteria, a burst of recent applications, or details in the application that don’t match your documents. See it play out: Priya asks Meera from our credit team

An illustrative conversation. Priya is a made-up borrower, not a real customer. Meera speaks for the Omozing credit team.

P
PriyaMy CIBIL score is 756. I’ve never missed a payment. A lender still turned down my ₹4 lakh loan. How?
M
MeeraA good score gets you through the first door, not all of them. Can I ask what you already pay each month in EMIs, and your take-home salary?
P
PriyaI take home ₹60,000. There’s a car loan at ₹15,000 and a phone on card EMI at ₹6,000.
M
MeeraSo ₹21,000, about 35% of your salary, already goes on EMIs. A ₹4 lakh loan over 36 months at an example rate of 14% adds about ₹13,671. That takes you to roughly 58%. Many lenders cap all EMIs together at around half your take-home.
P
PriyaNobody told me that. The app just said “not eligible”.
M
MeeraThat’s common, and it’s why your score didn’t save you. The lender wasn’t doubting your honesty; it was doubting the arithmetic. Did you apply anywhere else that week?
P
PriyaThree other apps, the same evening.
M
MeeraThose enquiries are now on your report too. Each is small, but four in one night looks like someone being turned down everywhere. Please pause for now.
P
PriyaSo what can I actually do?
M
MeeraBorrow less, borrow longer, or reduce what you already owe. ₹2 lakh over 36 months at the same example rate is about ₹6,836 a month, which brings you to around 46%. Adding a co-applicant’s income also helps. Then apply once, to a lender whose criteria you clearly meet.

Priya’s numbers: why the score wasn’t the problem

Share of a ₹60,000 take-home going on EMIs

Today 35% + ₹4 lakh, 36 mo 58%: declined + ₹2 lakh, 36 mo 46%: within limit ~50% FOIR ceiling at many lenders Existing EMIs ₹21,000 New EMI: too high / fits

Illustrative profile, not a real customer. EMIs at an example rate of 14% a year, not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year. Bar lengths are to scale against the full take-home.

FOIR, the share of take-home that goes on all EMIs together, is the quiet reason behind many high-score rejections. How FOIR works.

Other reasons a 750+ applicant gets declined

Income below the lender’s floor

Every lender sets a minimum salary. Omozing’s is a take-home of ₹40,000 a month; others may ask for more.

Job or employer criteria

A very short time in your current job, or an employer the lender can’t verify, can lead to a “no” whatever your score.

A burst of enquiries

Several applications in a few days. Why many applications hurt.

A detail behind the score

A good overall score can still hide a recent late payment or a settled account. Lenders read the report, not just the number.

Mismatched details

A salary, address or employer on the form that differs from your payslip or bank statement.

Amount too large for the profile

The loan may simply be bigger than the lender’s limit for your income. A smaller amount can pass.

What most people get wrong: they think a high score means a lender owes them a yes, and reapply elsewhere at once. The score is about your past; affordability is about your next 36 months. Re-applying without changing the amount, tenure or existing EMIs usually gets the same answer, plus another enquiry.

Good score, but the EMI didn’t fit?

A credit officer reads your full report and your income together, and a co-applicant’s income can be added.

Frequently asked questions

Can a loan be rejected even with a 750 CIBIL score?

Yes. Lenders also check income, existing EMIs, job stability, recent enquiries and whether your documents match your application.

What is FOIR and why does it matter?

FOIR is the share of your take-home that goes on all EMIs, including the new one. Many lenders cap it at around 50%, so a high score can’t make up for EMIs that are already heavy.

Does a rejection lower my score?

The rejection itself isn’t recorded, but the hard enquiry from the application is. Several applications close together can lower your score.

Should I apply for a smaller amount?

Often that is the simplest fix. A smaller loan or a longer tenure lowers the EMI and can bring your FOIR within the lender’s limit.

How do I find the real reason I was rejected?

Ask the lender, then check your full credit report and add up your current EMIs against your take-home. One of those usually explains it.
