I applied to many loan apps. Why did my score drop?

In short: Each time you submit an application, the app or its partner lender usually pulls your credit report, and that is recorded as a hard enquiry. One enquiry causes a small, temporary dip. Many in a few days look like you are short of money and being turned down, so they weigh more on your score and make the next lender cautious. The dip fades as the enquiries age, provided you stop applying and keep paying on time.

See it play out: Priya asks Meera from our credit team

An illustrative conversation. Priya is a made-up borrower, not a real customer. Meera speaks for the Omozing credit team.

P
PriyaLast week I needed ₹20,000 for my rent deposit. I tried seven loan apps over three days. Now my score is lower than it was. I didn’t even take a loan!
M
MeeraThat’s the frustrating part. You don’t have to take the loan for it to count. When you hit “apply” or “check my limit” and submit, most apps send your details to a lender, and the lender pulls your report. That’s a hard enquiry, and it’s recorded whether you’re approved or not.
P
PriyaBut I check my score on an app every week and that never did anything.
M
MeeraRight, checking your own score is a soft enquiry, and it has no effect. The difference is who asked and why. A lender pulling your report because you applied is the one that counts.
P
PriyaSo seven applications means seven times the damage?
M
MeeraIt doesn’t work like simple multiplication, and nobody can quote you a fixed number of points. But a cluster looks worse than the same enquiries spread out. To a lender, seven enquiries in three days says “being turned down everywhere”.
P
PriyaTwo of the apps did approve me but I cancelled. Does that show up as a loan?
M
MeeraIf no money was disbursed, there should be no loan account. Download your full report and check. If an account appears that you never took, dispute it straight away. Also watch the SMS and email alerts the bureaus send when your report is accessed.
P
PriyaHow do I get my score back?
M
MeeraStop applying, pay every EMI and card bill on time, and let the enquiries age. When you do need a loan, pick one lender whose published criteria you clearly meet and apply once.

Illustrative, not a real report. Seven enquiries from seven lenders in three days is exactly the pattern lenders call “credit hungry”. The next lender sees this list before deciding.

Why a cluster hurts more than the number suggests

It signals urgency

Many small applications at once suggest a cash crunch, which is when people are most likely to miss payments.

It hides the outcome

The next lender sees the enquiries but not why you didn’t take a loan, so it often assumes you were declined.

It can lead to stacking

If several apps do approve you, you end up with many small loans, which is its own warning sign. SmartSwitch exists for people already in that spot.

It fades

Enquiries matter most while they are recent. With no new applications and clean repayments, their weight drops over the following months.

What most people get wrong: they think “check your eligibility” buttons are harmless, like checking their own score. On many apps, submitting that form is a full application, and the lender’s credit pull is a hard enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying on a loan app affect my CIBIL score?

Usually yes. When you submit an application, the lender typically pulls your report, which is recorded as a hard enquiry and can lower your score slightly for a while.

Does a rejected application still count?

Yes. The enquiry is recorded when the lender checks your report, whether or not you are approved or take the money.

How long do enquiries affect my score?

Their effect is largest while they are recent and fades over the following months, as long as you stop adding new ones and keep paying on time.

Can I get hard enquiries removed?

Only if they are wrong, such as an enquiry you never authorised. Genuine enquiries from your own applications stay on the report.

How many loan applications are too many?

There is no fixed rule, but several in a week or two is a cluster most lenders notice. Apply to one or two lenders whose criteria you clearly meet.
