What does ‘written off’ mean on my credit report?

In short: “Written off” means the lender stopped expecting to be repaid and booked the unpaid amount as a loss in its own accounts. It does not mean the debt was forgiven: you can still owe it, and the lender can still try to recover it, within fair recovery rules. On your report it is one of the most serious statuses, more serious than a late payment, and it stays visible for years. The best fix is to pay what is owed and get the lender to update the account to “closed”.

How an account ends up written off, and the three ways out

A write-off rarely comes out of nowhere. It is usually the end of months of missed payments, after the loan has passed 90 days overdue and become a non-performing asset. What happens next depends on you.

The road to a write-off, and what can follow it

EMIs missed DPD climbs: 030, 060… Over 90 days overdue Loan becomes an NPA Written off Lender books a loss Pay in full Ask the lender to report the account as Closed Best long-term result Settle for less Shows as Settled Still negative Shortfall can be paid later Do nothing Stays Written off Recovery can continue Hardest to borrow again

Simplified. Every lender has its own process and timing for writing off a loan, and whatever you choose, the earlier history of missed payments stays on your report.

Written off vs settled vs closed

StatusWhat it meansHow lenders tend to read it
ClosedLoan repaid in full and the account ended normallyNeutral to positive
SettledYou paid less than you owed and the lender accepted itNegative: the lender took a loss with your agreement
Written offThe lender booked the unpaid amount as a lossAmong the most serious entries; many lenders decline outright
Written off, then paidThe shortfall was later paid and the lender updated the accountStill visible, but read far better than an unpaid write-off

Next to the status, many reports show a written-off amount, sometimes split into total and principal. That figure is your starting point for a conversation with the lender. The difference between settled and closed has its own explainer: can settled be changed to closed?

What most people get wrong: they read “written off” as “waived” and assume the matter is over. A write-off is an accounting entry on the lender’s side. The debt can still be pursued, and the entry keeps telling every future lender that a loan went unpaid until you deal with it.

What to do about a written-off account

  1. Check it is really yours and really right

If the loan isn’t yours, or you had already repaid it, it is an error. Disputes are free and must be resolved within 30 days. How to dispute.

  2. Ask the lender for the exact outstanding, in writing

Contact the lender’s official customer care or grievance officer, not an agent who called you, and ask what it will take to close the account.

  3. Pay only through official channels

Pay into the lender’s own account and keep the receipt. Never pay into a personal account or to anyone promising to “clean” your report.

  4. Get the NOC and check the update

Ask the lender to report the account as closed and give you a no-dues certificate. Check your report after a couple of reporting cycles, usually one to two weeks under the 2026 rules, and dispute if it hasn’t changed.

Frequently asked questions

Does written off mean I don’t have to pay?

No. It means the lender booked a loss in its accounts. You can still owe the money, and the lender can still try to recover it within fair recovery rules.

Is written off worse than settled?

Generally, yes. Settled means you reached an agreement and paid part of the debt; written off means the lender stopped expecting repayment.

Can a written-off status be changed to closed?

If you pay the full outstanding, ask the lender to update the account to closed and give you a no-dues certificate. If it doesn’t update, raise a dispute.

How long does a written-off account stay on my report?

It stays visible for years. Its weight fades as you build a record of on-time payments after it, especially once it is cleared.

Can I get a loan with a written-off account?

It is hard, especially if the write-off is recent and unpaid. Clearing it and showing clean months afterwards gives lenders a reason to look again.
