Omozing Answers › FOIR and existing EMIs

Does a longer tenure make a loan more affordable?

Month to month, yes; in total, no. Spreading the same loan over more months lowers the EMI, which lowers your FOIR and leaves more of each salary free. But you pay interest for longer, so the loan costs more overall. On ₹6 lakh at an example 14% a year, moving from 24 to 36 months cuts the EMI by about ₹8,301 but adds about ₹46,851 of interest. The best tenure is usually the shortest one whose EMI you can still pay comfortably every month.

What changes the answer

Your monthly budget

If a shorter tenure pushes your EMIs past what you can carry, the longer tenure is the safer choice despite the cost.

Your FOIR room

A lower EMI fits more easily under a lender’s limit, so a longer tenure can make an approval possible.

The interest rate

The higher the rate, the more each extra month costs you.

Early closure costs

Planning to “take it long and close it early” only works if the foreclosure charge is worth it. Check the KFS.

Future borrowing

A longer loan keeps an EMI on your report for longer, which can reduce what you can borrow for a home or car later.

How stable your income is

If pay may dip, a lower EMI is a buffer worth paying for.

An example: one loan, five tenures

Sana is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. She takes home ₹80,000 a month, lives with family, has no other EMIs and needs ₹6 lakh. At an example rate of 14% a year:

TenureEMIShare of take-homeTotal interest
12 months₹53,87267.3%₹46,467
18 months₹37,14946.4%₹68,684
24 months₹28,80836.0%₹91,386
30 months₹23,81929.8%₹1,14,571
36 months₹20,50725.6%₹1,38,237

Example rate 14% a year, not an offer (Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year). Reducing-balance EMI; fees not included.

Sana’s ₹6 lakh: the EMI falls as the interest rises

Monthly EMI Total interest 12 months 18 months 24 months 30 months 36 months ₹53,872 ₹37,149 ₹28,808 ₹23,819 ₹20,507 ₹46,467 ₹68,684 ₹91,386 ₹1,14,571 ₹1,38,237

Each panel drawn to its own scale. Illustrative: ₹6 lakh at an example 14% a year.

The 12-month option fails any sensible budget. Eighteen months would take nearly half her pay. Twenty-four months keeps her EMI at 36% of take-home, and with no rent she can carry that. Thirty months buys a bigger buffer for about ₹23,000 more interest than 24. Thirty-six months is the most comfortable, but the comfort costs ₹46,851 over the 24-month plan.

How lenders look at it

For a lender, tenure is a sizing tool: a longer tenure lowers the EMI, which keeps your total FOIR within its limit. That is why a request that fails at 24 months can pass at 36. Lenders also weigh the risk of a long loan, since more can change in three years than in one. Most will let you choose within their range. Tenure does not change what counts as an obligation; it only changes the size of the new one.

At Omozing

Tenure is 3 to 36 months, repaid in fixed monthly EMIs. You can foreclose your loan (repay the full outstanding early). A foreclosure charge of 4%–6% applies, especially on longer tenures; the exact charge is in your KFS and loan agreement. We don’t offer part-prepayment.

What most people get wrong: they think a smaller EMI means a cheaper loan. It means a cheaper month and a more expensive loan. On ₹6 lakh at 14%, the 36-month plan costs about three times the interest of the 12-month plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to take a longer tenure and close the loan early?

Only if the foreclosure charge is less than the interest you save. Compare both in the Key Fact Statement and loan agreement before deciding.

Does a longer tenure improve my chance of approval?

It can, because a lower EMI keeps your FOIR within the lender’s limit. The lender still assesses your credit report and income.

How much extra interest does each year of tenure add?

It depends on the rate and amount. On ₹1 lakh at an example 14% a year, going from 24 to 36 months adds about ₹7,800 of interest.

What is the longest tenure for a personal loan at Omozing?

36 months. Tenure is 3 to 36 months, repaid in fixed monthly EMIs.

Should I choose a long tenure to keep FOIR low for a future home loan?

A lower EMI helps your FOIR, but the loan stays on your report for longer. Often a shorter loan that ends before you apply helps more.
