First check that you are comparing like with like: the slip’s net pay, not its gross earnings, against the credit. If the gap remains, it usually falls into one of these:
| Reason | Credit compared with slip | Proof that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Employer loan or salary advance recovered outside payroll | Lower | Advance letter or recovery schedule from HR |
| Reimbursements or allowances paid in a separate transfer | Higher, or two credits | Reimbursement statement |
| Arrears, bonus or a pay revision in that month | Higher once | Revision letter or that month’s slip |
| Salary split between two bank accounts | Lower in each account | Both statements |
| Unpaid leave or a part month | Lower once | That month’s slip |
| Part of the pay in cash | Lower every month | Hard to prove; lenders usually count only what is credited |
A gap that repeats every month without any of these reasons, or a slip that shows much more than ever reaches the bank, is what makes lenders cautious.
Gauri is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. Her latest slip shows net pay of ₹58,400, but ₹52,150 lands in her account each month. Earlier this year she took a ₹50,000 salary advance from her employer, repaid at ₹6,250 a month over 8 months. Finance deducts it after payroll, so it doesn’t appear on her slip.

The recovery is a real monthly obligation, so it should count once, and only once. Here is how much difference the reading makes, using an illustrative 50% FOIR, 14% a year and 36 months, with no other EMIs:
| How the gap is read | EMI room | Illustrative loan |
|---|---|---|
| Slip ₹58,400, recovery counted as an obligation | ₹22,950 | About ₹6.71 lakh |
| Credit ₹52,150, recovery already taken out | ₹26,075 | About ₹7.63 lakh |
| Credit ₹52,150 and recovery counted again | ₹19,825 | About ₹5.80 lakh |
Examples, not an offer. Each lender decides how it treats income and obligations.
Left unexplained, the gap risks the bottom row: about ₹91,000 less than the first reading, because the same ₹6,250 is taken off twice. Gauri wrote one line, “Credit is net pay minus ₹6,250 advance recovery, 3 of 8 instalments paid, ending in 5 months”, and attached HR’s recovery schedule. The remaining ₹31,250 will be cleared within five months, which a lender may take into account.
It gets harder when:
What helps:
The slip says what your employer intends to pay; the statement shows what actually arrives and stays available for an EMI. Lenders generally put more weight on money that is credited, and they want the two documents to agree or to be reconciled. A clear explanation lets the reader count each obligation once. For the bigger picture of what is read, see what lenders look for in a bank statement, and for how existing repayments shape the amount, the FOIR and existing EMIs questions.
You need your last 6 months’ salary-account bank statement, your latest salary slip, and PAN and Aadhaar for KYC. A credit officer reads your full credit report and both documents together, so a reconciliation note is read by a person.
Salaried, take-home ₹40,000 or more. Add a one-line note on any difference; a credit officer reads it.
Most look at both and give more weight to what is actually credited. If they differ, they want to understand why before deciding.
Usually not, if it is reimbursements, arrears or a bonus. Expect lenders to treat one-off extras with caution rather than count them as regular income.
For affordability, usually yes: it is money leaving your pay each month. It generally won’t be on your credit report, so declare it yourself.
Usually only the part that reaches your bank can be verified, so lenders tend to work from that.
Ask HR for an accurate document, such as a letter explaining the deduction, not a slip changed to match. Altered documents can lead to rejection.
