For a small business without property to pledge, unsecured credit is often the only fast way to fund a big order, stock up before a season or bridge slow-paying customers. This guide explains how lenders, especially NBFCs, decide on these loans, what they really cost, and how to apply without hurting your chances. For the wider landscape of business finance, see our guide to business loan options and providers in India. Omozing itself currently lends only to salaried individuals; this is general information, not financial advice.
How an unsecured business loan works
Because there’s no asset to recover if things go wrong, the lender leans heavily on two things: evidence that money flows through your business steadily, and the personal credit record of the people running it. Most lenders also ask the proprietor, partners or directors to sign a personal guarantee, which means the debt can follow you personally if the business can’t pay.
Banks vs NBFCs vs fintechs for unsecured business loans
| Banks | NBFCs | Fintech lenders and platforms | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical borrower | Established businesses with filed financials and a banking relationship | Small and mid-sized businesses, including those with modest documentation | Small merchants and online sellers with strong digital sales or GST data |
| Speed | Slower; more documentation | Faster | Often the fastest |
| Pricing | Usually lowest for strong profiles | Higher; varies widely | Varies widely; watch fees and short tenures |
| Flexibility | Strict on vintage, score and financials | More flexible on score and income proof | Flexible data use (GST, UPI, marketplace sales) |
| Repayment | Monthly EMIs | Monthly EMIs | Monthly, weekly or daily |
Many people search for an “unsecured business loan from an NBFC” because NBFCs are often more willing to lend to younger businesses or owners with average scores. That flexibility is real, but it is priced in. Whatever you choose, the lender must be an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC; a fintech app should name its lending partner in the Key Fact Statement.
What lenders typically look for
- Business vintage: many lenders want at least one to three years of operations; some fintechs go lower if sales data is strong.
- Turnover and banking: regular credits, healthy average balances and few cheque or ECS bounces.
- GST and ITR filings: filed on time and consistent with your bank statements.
- Owners’ credit scores: commonly 700 or above for the best terms; lower scores may get smaller amounts or higher rates.
- Existing debt: how much of your monthly cash flow already goes to other EMIs.
- Business type: some sectors are treated as higher risk and may face stricter terms.
These are common patterns, not fixed rules; each lender sets its own policy. Check the lender’s published criteria before applying.

Shorter tenure, bigger EMI; longer tenure, more interest
Unsecured business loans tend to run for one to three years. The right tenure is the one your monthly cash flow can carry comfortably, even in a slow month.
₹5 lakh unsecured loan at 20% a year: EMI vs total interest by tenure
Illustrative. Reducing-balance EMI on ₹5,00,000 at 20% a year. Processing fees and GST are not included. Not a quote from any lender; actual rates depend on your profile.
Pick the tenure your slowest month can afford, then prepay if a good month comes, provided prepayment charges are reasonable.
The costs to check before you sign
Easy to miss
- Processing fee plus GST, deducted from the amount you receive
- Daily or weekly repayment, which makes the effective rate higher than it looks
- Foreclosure and part-payment charges
- Bundled insurance and documentation fees
- Penal charges for late payment
Ask for in writing
- The Key Fact Statement with the APR
- The full repayment schedule
- Exactly who the lender is (bank or NBFC name)
- What the personal guarantee covers
- The grievance officer’s contact
Collateral-free, but cheaper: the CGTMSE route
An unsecured loan isn’t the only way to borrow without collateral. Under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE), a government trust guarantees part of the lender’s risk on eligible loans to micro and small enterprises. As of October 2026 the guarantee ceiling is ₹10 crore per borrower (raised from ₹5 crore with effect from 1 April 2025). A guarantee fee applies. RBI rules also bar scheduled commercial banks from taking collateral on micro and small enterprise loans up to ₹20 lakh, and Mudra loans go up to ₹20 lakh without collateral. If you’re registered on Udyam and eligible, ask your bank about these before paying fintech-level rates. Check cgtmse.in and mudra.org.in before acting.
How to apply: a short checklist
Get your papers in order
Udyam and GST registration, 12 months of bank statements, the last two ITRs, and KYC for the business and every owner.
Check the owners’ credit reports
Fix errors before a lender sees them. One free full report per bureau each calendar year helps.
Work out the EMI you can carry
Use your weakest recent month, not your best, and include existing EMIs.
Shortlist two or three regulated lenders
Compare their KFS side by side; a marketplace can help. FundsTiger, our sister company, is one option.
Apply to one at a time
Several applications at once mean several hard enquiries on the owners’ reports.
Never pay upfront
No regulated lender asks for an “approval” or “file” fee before sanction. Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Salaried owner of a side business?
If your main income is a salary, a personal loan may be simpler than a business loan for an early-stage venture. Omozing lends up to ₹25 lakh to salaried people with a credit score from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000+.
Frequently asked questions
What is an unsecured business loan?
A business loan given without collateral such as property, machinery or deposits. The lender relies on your business’s cash flow, filings and the owners’ credit records, and usually asks for a personal guarantee.
Do NBFCs give unsecured business loans?
Yes. Many RBI-registered NBFCs offer unsecured business loans and are often more flexible than banks on vintage, documentation and credit score, though usually at a higher cost. Check the lender’s RBI registration before applying.
What credit score is needed for an unsecured business loan?
Lenders set their own cut-offs, but owners with scores around 700 or above usually get the best terms. Lower scores may still qualify for smaller amounts or at higher rates.
How much can I borrow without collateral?
It depends on your turnover, cash flow and the lender. Under CGTMSE, eligible micro and small enterprises can get guaranteed collateral-free loans up to ₹10 crore as of October 2026, subject to the lender’s own assessment.
Is a personal guarantee required?
Usually, yes. Most lenders ask the proprietor, partners or directors to guarantee an unsecured business loan, so you could be personally liable if the business can’t repay.
Can a new business get an unsecured loan?
It is harder, as most lenders want one to three years of vintage. New businesses may find Mudra loans, Stand-Up India or a startup-focused lender more suitable. See our guide to startup business loans.
