Does ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ show on my credit report?

Usually, yes. When a regulated bank or NBFC provides the pay-later credit, it is a credit facility like any other, and it is usually reported to the credit bureaus. Signing up can trigger a hard enquiry, the account can appear on your report, and a missed pay-later due date can be recorded as a late payment. Paid on time, it can add to your history. Check the lender’s terms for your specific service, because the details differ.

How a pay-later purchase reaches your report

The app or checkout button you see is often not the lender. Behind most pay-later services sits a regulated bank or NBFC that actually extends the credit, and it is that lender which reports to the bureaus.

From the checkout button to your credit report

You tap “pay later” at checkout The app the brand you see The lender bank or NBFC gives the credit Your report new account and payment record Reported by the lender to the bureaus The name on your report may be the lender’s, not the app’s

Practices vary between services. Your full credit report is the only reliable way to see what has been reported in your name.

That last point catches people out. When they download their report and see an unfamiliar lender name with a small balance, they assume fraud. Often it is the lender behind a pay-later service they did sign up for. Check your sign-up emails or the app’s terms before you dispute; if it really isn’t yours, dispute it at once. If a loan you never took is on your report.

What each pay-later action can do to your report

What you doWhat can show on your reportEffect
Activate a pay-later limitA hard enquiry, then a new credit accountSmall, temporary dip from the enquiry
Use it and pay by the due dateOn-time payment monthsAdds to a positive history
Miss a due dateDays past due on that accountA late mark, same as a missed EMI. What one missed payment does
Split a purchase into instalmentsAn instalment loan or a balance on the facilityCounts as debt you owe
Sign up on several appsSeveral enquiries and accountsLooks credit hungry; more due dates to miss
Stop using it but leave it openAn open facility with no balanceUsually neutral; close it if you don’t need it
What most people get wrong: they treat pay-later as a payment method, like UPI, rather than as a loan. Because the amounts are small and often “interest-free”, it feels harmless. But a ₹1,200 pay-later bill missed by 30 days can show on your report as a late payment, just like a missed EMI, and a lender will read it as one.

Frequently asked questions

Does BNPL affect my CIBIL score?

It can. Pay-later credit from a regulated lender is usually reported, so on-time payments can help and missed ones can hurt, like any other loan.

Does activating a pay-later limit count as an enquiry?

Often, yes. The lender usually checks your report before giving you a limit, which is a hard enquiry.

Why does an unknown lender appear on my report after using BNPL?

Many pay-later services are funded by a partner bank or NBFC, and the account may be reported under that lender’s name. If you can’t link it to anything you signed up for, dispute it.

Can BNPL help me build a credit score?

If it is reported and you pay on time, it can add to your history. A secured credit card is usually a simpler, more predictable way to build a first score.

Should I close BNPL accounts I don’t use?

For most people, yes. Closing an unused facility removes a limit you might be tempted to use and one more due date to track.
