When you raise a dispute with a bureau (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark), the bureau passes it to the lender that reported the data. The lender has 21 days to check its records and tell the bureau whether to correct the entry. The bureau then has 9 days to update your report and close the complaint. Together that is 30 days. Every calendar day beyond that, weekends included, earns ₹100.
An illustrative example, not a real case. The blue bars are the time each side is allowed; the red bar is the extra time taken, which in this example was the lender’s. Drawn to scale: each day is the same width.
Say you spot a closed loan still shown as overdue and raise a dispute on 5 June 2026. Thirty days later is 5 July, the deadline. The lender takes 35 days to confirm its mistake instead of 21, and the bureau then updates your report within its 9 days, so the complaint closes on 19 July, day 44.
The same rule scales simply. Use this table to see what a longer delay is worth:
| Days resolved after the 30-day limit | Compensation at ₹100 a day |
|---|---|
| 7 days | ₹700 |
| 14 days | ₹1,400 |
| 30 days | ₹3,000 |
| 60 days | ₹6,000 |
Compensation is due automatically once the complaint is resolved late, but it helps to know your dates. If you still have to raise the dispute, our dispute guide walks through each bureau’s process.
Save the acknowledgement email or screenshot from the bureau. Day 0 is the date your complaint was lodged.
Compensation is paid to the account you provide. Share it with the bureau or lender if they ask, and only through their official channels.
Count the calendar days. If the complaint closed after day 30 and nothing arrives within 5 working days, write to the lender’s or bureau’s grievance officer with your dates.
If the lender or bureau doesn’t respond, you can complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Corrections are free. Our guide shows how to dispute with each bureau, what proof to attach and what to do if the deadline passes.
₹100 for each calendar day beyond the 30-day limit. For example, a complaint resolved 14 days late earns ₹1,400.
Whoever caused the delay. If the lender took longer than its 21 days, the lender pays; if the bureau took longer than its 9 days, the bureau pays.
Within 5 working days of the complaint being resolved, to the bank account you provide.
Not for the rejection itself. Compensation applies only if the complaint took longer than 30 days to resolve, whatever the outcome.
Write to the grievance officer of the lender or bureau with your complaint date and resolution date. If that fails, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
