Omozing Answers › FOIR and existing EMIs

At 45% of take-home, a lender with a 50% limit has only 5% of your pay left to lend against.
Several app loans or pay-later plans read as stretched cash flow, even when each is paid on time.
A run of applications after rejections adds hard enquiries and makes the next lender warier.
An EMI with a few months left will soon free up room. Timing can do more than any other step.
Every EMI paid on time shows you handle a heavy load. A late mark makes lenders more cautious.
Many lenders consider combined income, which lowers the share going to EMIs. How a co-applicant raises the amount.
Karan is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. He takes home ₹85,000 a month and pays three sets of EMIs:
| Existing loan | EMI | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Personal loan | ₹16,000 | 14 months left |
| Car loan | ₹12,500 | 3 years left |
| Three app loans | ₹9,500 | ₹26,000 left in total |
| Total | ₹38,000 | 44.7% of take-home |
He wants ₹3 lakh. At an example rate of 14% a year over 36 months, the EMI is about ₹10,253, which would take his FOIR to 56.8%. Under an illustrative 50% cap, only ₹4,500 of EMI room is left, enough for roughly ₹1.31 lakh. Here is how the picture changes:
Bars drawn to scale. Illustrative: example rate 14% a year over 36 months (not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year); co-applicant take-home ₹45,000 with no EMIs of their own; 40% and 50% are example limits.
Clearing the three app loans from savings costs Karan ₹26,000 and frees ₹9,500 a month. His FOIR drops to 33.5%, and his indicative room under a 50% cap rises to about ₹4.09 lakh. Adding his wife as a co-applicant would bring the combined FOIR with the new loan to 37.1%. Waiting 14 months for the personal loan to end would also work, if the need can wait.
It gets harder when:
What helps:
A high FOIR is not an automatic no everywhere, but it narrows the margin for error, so lenders look harder at everything else: how regularly your salary arrives, whether your statement shows bounced debits, how many loans opened recently, and whether you are borrowing to repay other loans. Each lender sets its own limit and decides how to treat loans you promise to close. Lenders generally count an old EMI until the loan actually shows as closed.
A credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score. Co-applicants are welcome: spouse, family members, and even friends. If several app loans are behind your high EMIs, SmartSwitch is built for that situation.
Salaried, take-home ₹40,000 or more, credit score from 600: check your offer. Loans up to ₹25 lakh over 3 to 36 months.
Many lenders decline above around 50%, though each sets its own limit. Bringing the figure down first, or adding a co-applicant, usually works better than applying widely.
Usually not until it is actually closed. Ask the lender how it treats loans you intend to repay.
No. Income and FOIR are not part of the score. But high EMIs make late payments more likely, and those do hurt.
It can be simpler, but the lender still checks your total EMIs against your income, so the same limit applies.
Fix the cause before reapplying. See what to do after a high-FOIR rejection.
