Personal loan on a ₹5 lakh monthly salary: when it makes sense

In short: Eligibility is not the question at ₹5 lakh a month. The FOIR formula supports roughly ₹41.6 lakh to ₹76.4 lakh, far above Omozing’s maximum of ₹25 lakh, and ₹25 lakh at 11% a year over 36 months is ₹81,847 a month, just 16.4% of take-home. The real decision is whether to borrow at all or use what you already own. A personal loan tends to make sense when the need is specific, you can repay in 12–24 months, and selling investments now would cost you more than the interest. Figures are illustrative and depend on a full credit assessment.

The formula vs the ₹25 lakh cap

Lenders size a loan from FOIR, the share of take-home that all EMIs together may use, often around 40%–50%. On ₹5 lakh that leaves ₹2,00,000–₹2,50,000 a month of EMI room before existing loans. How FOIR works.

Illustrative only, rounded down to the nearest ₹1,000. Existing EMI scenarios are 0%, 10% and 20% of take-home. “→₹25L” marks where the formula passes our ₹25 lakh maximum. Rates are examples, not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year, and the best rates are typically for high, stable incomes and strong credit histories.

Even with ₹1 lakh a month of other EMIs, only the 24-month options at a 40% limit stay below the cap. If you need more than ₹25 lakh, the usual routes are your own funds for the balance, or a secured loan elsewhere. See every income band on personal loan by salary.

Borrow, sell, or borrow against your investments?

High earners usually have options. Here is how the three common routes compare in general terms; exact terms vary by lender and product.

Unsecured personal loanSell investmentsLoan against securities
What it costsInterest plus a one-time fee, both in the Key Fact StatementNo interest, but you give up future growth and may owe capital-gains taxInterest and charges set by the lender
Your investmentsStay invested and untouchedGone; buying back later may cost moreStay invested but pledged
If markets fallNo effect on the loanSelling in a dip locks in the fallLender may ask for more security or sell pledged holdings
Credit reportA new loan; on-time EMIs build historyNo effectA new loan, reported like any other

To weigh the first two, put a number on borrowing. ₹25 lakh at 11% costs ₹1,51,450 in interest over 12 months (EMI ₹2,20,954, 44.2% of take-home), ₹2,96,470 over 24 months, or ₹4,46,485 over 36. Then ask your adviser what selling would cost in tax and lost growth. If selling is cheaper and the timing is fine, sell. If not, a short loan is often the cleaner choice.

A personal loan fits when

  • The need is one-off and dated, such as a wedding or a deposit.
  • You can clear it in 12–24 months from salary or a bonus.
  • Selling now would mean a market dip or a tax bill.
  • You want no link between the loan and your portfolio.

Think twice when

  • The money is for investing or trading.
  • You need more than ₹25 lakh from one loan.
  • You already have idle cash earning less than the loan costs.
  • A home loan application is weeks away.
What most people get wrong: they assume selling investments is “free” because there is no interest. It isn’t: the tax, the lost compounding and the cost of buying back can exceed a year of interest on a short loan. The reverse also holds: borrowing to keep a portfolio intact only pays if the portfolio is likely to earn more than the loan costs.

Two practical notes. Omozing’s processing fee is 3%–7% plus GST, deducted at disbursal: on ₹25 lakh a 3% fee is ₹75,000 plus ₹13,500 GST. And personal-loan interest is generally not tax-deductible unless the money is used for specific purposes; speak to a tax adviser.

Need up to ₹25 lakh, without selling?

Two documents, a digital process, 3–36 month tenures, and a credit officer who reviews your profile. Rates start from 11% a year.

Frequently asked questions

How much personal loan can I get on ₹5 lakh a month?

The formula supports well over ₹40 lakh with few other EMIs, but our maximum is ₹25 lakh; higher limits may be available from other lenders or secured loans.

Can I repay ₹25 lakh in 12 months?

At 11% a year the EMI is about ₹2,20,954, or 44.2% of a ₹5 lakh take-home, which fits within common FOIR limits if you have few other EMIs.

Is a personal loan cheaper than selling my mutual funds?

Sometimes. Compare the loan’s total interest and fee with the tax and lost growth from selling; a tax adviser can help with the second half.

Does a high salary guarantee the lowest rate?

No. The best rates are typically for high, stable incomes and strong credit histories, but the rate depends on your full assessment and is shown in the Key Fact Statement.

Will this loan affect a future home loan?

Its EMI counts in the home-loan lender’s FOIR, so a short tenure that ends before you apply keeps your options open.
