Is a 3-month personal loan better than a 30-day payday loan?

Usually, yes, if you qualify. A 30-day payday loan takes the whole amount plus fees and per-day interest from one salary, and missing that date leads to extension fees. A 3-month personal loan splits the same amount into three EMIs at an annual rate, so the total cost is often lower in rupees and next month’s pay is not emptied. A payday loan can only make sense for a very small amount you are certain to repay in full on the date, with total charges you have checked in the Key Fact Statement (KFS).

How it is pricedOften a fee plus interest quoted per dayInterest quoted per year, plus a processing fee
How you repayAll of it in one go, usually on your next paydayThree monthly EMIs
Cost on ₹30,000 (illustrative)₹6,000 to ₹12,000 if repaid on timeAbout ₹1,800 to ₹3,600 including the fee

If you can’t pay on timeExtension fees and more interest; the amount owed does not fallA missed EMI is overdue and charged as per the loan agreement
Credit reportUsually reported; overdue payments hurt, and a run of short loans looks like stretched cash flowUsually reported; on-time EMIs build a record, missed ones hurt

Illustrative pricing, explained below. Each application adds a hard enquiry: a small, temporary dip in your score.

An example: Nandini needs ₹30,000

Nandini is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. She takes home ₹45,000 a month and needs ₹30,000 on the 8th for a dental treatment.

Total cost of borrowing ₹30,000

App A, rolled once ₹24,000 App A, on time ₹12,000 App B, on time ₹6,000 3-month loan Y ₹3,585 3-month loan X ₹1,765 Interest plus fees, in rupees. Bars drawn to scale.

Illustrative pricing, not any particular lender. Rates are examples, not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year. A rollover is assumed to repeat the fee and 30 days of interest.

App A takes ₹42,000 from her next ₹45,000 salary, leaving ₹3,000 for the month; App B leaves ₹9,000. Either loan’s EMI leaves her more than ₹34,600 each month. The processing fee is usually deducted at disbursal, so on Loan Y about ₹27,500 reaches her account.

How to decide in four questions

1. Can next salary absorb the full repayment and still cover rent, EMIs and food? If not, a 30-day loan will push you into a rollover. Look at an EMI loan.
2. Is there a free option? An employer advance or a family loan with a written date costs nothing. Asking your employer.
3. Do you meet a personal-loan lender’s criteria? If yes, compare the APR in each KFS, not the headline rate.
4. Still choosing a 30-day loan? Borrow the smallest amount and never take a second app loan to repay it.

When it gets harder, and what helps

How lenders look at it

A personal-loan lender reads your full credit report and bank statement and checks how much of your salary already goes on EMIs. Under RBI digital lending rules, any regulated lender must give you a KFS with the APR before you sign, and disbursal and repayment go directly between your bank account and the lender’s.

At Omozing

Omozing offers unsecured personal loans for salaried people. Tenure is 3 to 36 months, repaid in fixed monthly EMIs. You need a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more a month, and we consider applicants with a credit score from 600. Interest rates start from 11% a year, and the processing fee is 3%–7% of the loan amount, plus GST. The exact rate, fees and APR are in the KFS before you sign.

What most people get wrong: they think a 30-day loan is cheaper because it is shorter. A short tenure helps only when the rate is annual. With a fee and per-day interest, 30 days can cost several times more than three months of EMIs on the same amount.

Need a few months, not a few days?

See what EMI fits your salary, then check your offer. Salaried, take-home ₹40,000 or more, credit score from 600.

Frequently asked questions

Is a payday loan ever cheaper than a 3-month loan?

Rarely in rupees, once the fee and per-day interest are added. It can suit a very small amount repaid in full on the date.

Why compare APR rather than the rate?

APR combines interest and fees over the real tenure, so per-day and annual pricing can be compared fairly.

Will repaying a 3-month loan on time help my score?

On-time EMIs on a loan reported to the bureaus build a positive record. Missed or late EMIs hurt it.

What if I can’t repay a payday loan on the date?

Contact the lender before the due date and ask the full cost of any extension. Each extension usually repeats fees and interest without reducing what you owe.
