CIBIL Score Below 600? A 10-Point Remedy to Get Back Above 600

Table of Contents

In short: A CIBIL score below 600 usually means something serious is on your report: recent missed payments, an account still overdue, or a settled or written-off loan. Most unsecured lenders, Omozing included, won’t lend at this level, so the honest goal is to get back above 600 first. The 10-point remedy below works in order: stop any live overdue, fix errors, close or regularise problem accounts, then rebuild with secured credit. Most people who follow it consistently see real movement over 6 to 12 months, though no one can promise a specific score.

Where a score below 600 leaves you

Scores run from 300 to 900. Below 600, a lender reading your report usually sees active or recent trouble rather than one old slip. That changes what you can realistically borrow.

What each score band usually opens up

300–599 600–699 700–900 300600900 Mostly secured credit:gold loan, FD loan, secured card Some unsecuredlenders, full review Most lenders, better terms The goal of this plan: cross the 600 line with a clean recent record

A simplified view; each lender sets its own policy (bands drawn to scale). A score alone never guarantees approval or rejection.

The 10-point remedy, in the right order

Order matters. Building new credit while an account is still overdue is like mopping the floor with the tap running.

Phase 1: Stop the damage (weeks 1–4)

  1. Pull all your reports

Get your free annual report from CIBIL, and ideally Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark too. List every account that shows overdue, settled or written off.

  2. Bring live overdue accounts current

An account still running days past due does the most harm, every month. Pay at least the overdue amount so the count stops growing.

  3. Stop all new applications

Each rejection adds an enquiry and pushes you further down. Don’t apply for anything for at least three months.

  4. Stay away from instant app loans

Borrowing at short-term app rates to pay old dues usually creates new defaults. See how to get rid of payday loans.

Phase 2: Repair the report (months 1–3)

  1. Dispute every genuine error

Closed loans shown as open, wrong amounts, accounts that aren’t yours. It’s free and you can do it yourself; see CIBIL dispute resolution.

  2. Negotiate closures, not just settlements

For old defaults, ask the lender for the full outstanding and whether penal charges can be waived. Paying in full gets a “closed” status; a settlement leaves a “settled” remark for years.

  3. Collect no-dues certificates

Keep a no-dues certificate for every account you close, and check it is reflected on your report within a couple of reporting cycles.

Phase 3: Rebuild (months 3–12)

  1. Add one secured credit card

A card issued against a fixed deposit is usually the easiest “credit card for a low CIBIL score”. Use 10–30% of the limit and pay in full by auto-debit.

  2. Keep card balances low everywhere

High utilisation drags a recovering score. Pay balances down before the statement date.

  3. Let time work

Six to twelve months of unbroken on-time payments is what turns a “risky” report into a “recovering” one. Check your score every quarter, not every day.

An illustrative recovery

An illustrative profile, not a real customer: Suresh, salaried in Chennai, score 561. His report shows one personal loan 90+ days overdue, one app loan settled last year, and a card at 92% of its limit.

Month 1Clears the overdue on the personal loan; stops applying
Months 2–3Pays down the card to 25%; gets the loan closed with a no-dues certificate
Months 3–12Adds a secured card, pays everything on time

The settled remark doesn’t disappear, but it is now surrounded by months of clean, current accounts, which is exactly what a credit officer wants to see when a score crosses 600.

When to get help

If you have several defaults, are being chased by recovery agents, or can’t work out what to pay first, a structured review helps. Our Credit Score Booster programme looks at your report with you and sets out what will move it. We don’t promise any particular score, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Where Omozing fits

We’ll be honest: Omozing does not lend when a credit score is below 600. Once you are back to 600 or above, are salaried and take home ₹40,000 or more a month, we can consider an unsecured personal loan, and a credit officer reads your full report so a recovery like the one above is seen for what it is. Rates start from 11% a year, with the exact rate, fees and APR shown in the Key Fact Statement before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a loan with a CIBIL score below 600?

Unsecured personal loans are very hard to get below 600. Secured options such as a gold loan or a loan against a fixed deposit, or applying with a strong co-applicant, are more realistic until your score recovers.

Which credit card can I get with a CIBIL score below 600?

A secured credit card issued against a fixed deposit is usually the most accessible. It is approved on the deposit and, used lightly and paid in full, helps rebuild your record.

How long does it take to go from below 600 to above 600?

It depends on what is on your report. If the main problem is a live overdue or high card balances, change can show within a few reporting cycles. Recovering from settlements or write-offs usually takes many months of clean history.

Is a 600 CIBIL score good?

600 is on the low side, but it is the point at which some lenders, including Omozing, will consider an unsecured personal loan after reading the full report. Above 700 opens up most lenders and better terms.

Should I settle my old loans to improve my score?

Settling is better than leaving a loan unpaid, but it leaves a settled remark. If you can, pay the full outstanding so the account is reported as closed.

Can someone remove negative entries for a fee?

No one can legally remove accurate information from your report. Only errors can be corrected, and you can dispute them yourself for free.
