Credit card debt consolidation loan

Revolving a credit card balance is one of the most expensive ways to borrow in India. A personal loan at a fixed rate can pay off one or several cards in one go and replace them with a single EMI that ends on a known date.

In short: A credit card debt consolidation loan is an unsecured personal loan you use to clear outstanding card balances. Card interest on revolved balances commonly runs at around 2.5% to 4% a month; a personal loan from Omozing starts from 11% a year, with your exact rate in the Key Fact Statement. Salaried borrowers with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more and a credit score of 600 or more can apply for up to ₹25 lakh over 3 to 36 months. It only works if you stop revolving on the cards once they are cleared.

How credit card consolidation works

A credit card is a convenient way to pay and, if you clear the full statement every month, a free 20 to 50 days of credit. The trouble starts when you pay only part of the bill. Interest is then charged on the revolved balance, new purchases usually lose their interest-free period, and the “minimum amount due” keeps the balance alive for years.

Consolidation replaces that open-ended debt with a closed one. You take an unsecured personal loan for the total you owe across your cards, the money is paid into your own bank account, and you use it to pay each card’s outstanding in full. From then on you have one EMI, one due date and a loan that ends on a fixed date, usually at a much lower rate than the cards were charging.

This page is about credit card balances. If your problem is several short-term loans from instant loan apps, the right tool is SmartSwitch, which is designed for app-loan debt. If you are weighing a card-to-card balance transfer instead, our guide to credit card balance transfers explains how those offers work.

Who a card consolidation loan suits

A good fit

Salaried people with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more and a score of 600 or more, carrying a revolved balance on one or more cards that they cannot clear in the next two or three statements.

Also a fit

Anyone who has converted several purchases into card EMIs and lost track of what they owe, or whose card utilisation is so high that it is dragging their score down.

Not a fit

Someone who can clear the balance from savings or a bonus within a month or two, or who expects to keep spending on the cards at the same pace after clearing them.

What credit card debt really costs

Card issuers publish their finance charges in the Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) for each card. Comparison sites that track these documents put revolving interest across Indian cards at roughly 2.5% to 4% a month, or about 30% to 48% a year, with some cards higher (BankBazaar, checked October 2026). GST at 18% is charged on top of interest and fees, and late-payment charges apply if even the minimum is missed.

The chart below compares the total interest on an illustrative ₹2 lakh card balance under three approaches. It assumes 3.5% a month on the card (inside the published range) and no new spending.

Total interest to clear ₹2 lakh of card debt (illustrative)

Card, 5% minimum ₹4,04,454 · 18 yrs Card, ₹10,000 a month ₹1,49,978 · 35 mths Loan 24 mths at 20% ₹51,380 Loan 24 mths at 16% ₹42,103 Loan 24 mths at 11% ₹30,798 Loan figures include an illustrative 3% fee plus GST (₹7,080).

Illustrative. Card: 3.5% a month on the reducing balance, no new purchases, GST on interest excluded (it would make the card figures higher). The “minimum” line assumes 5% of the balance with a ₹500 floor. Loan: reducing-balance EMIs at 11% (our starting rate), 16% and 20% a year; rates other than 11% are illustrative and not an offer. Your rate, fee and APR are in your Key Fact Statement.

The gap is large because card interest compounds monthly on a balance that shrinks slowly, while a loan EMI is calculated to clear principal and interest together by a fixed date. Even at a loan rate well above our starting rate, the consolidated route costs a fraction of revolving.

How much to borrow

Pull up the latest statement of every card and note the total outstanding, not the minimum due. Add any card EMIs (converted purchases) you also want to close, and check whether they carry a foreclosure charge. That total is your target. Do not round up for “a little extra”; spare money tends to end up back on the cards.

Then check affordability. Add the new EMI to your other EMIs and keep the total comfortably under half of your take-home pay. If the EMI over 24 months is too tight, consider 36 months, but compare the extra interest using the table below and plan to prepay if your income rises.

If the total you owe is more than you can borrow, clear the card with the highest interest rate first, then the one closest to its limit, and keep paying the rest in full each month.

Should you borrow for this? A five-question test

  • Is the loan’s APR clearly lower than the cards’? Compare the APR in the Key Fact Statement with the monthly rate on your card statements multiplied by 12.
  • Will the cards actually be paid in full? Consolidation only saves money if every rupee goes to the cards on the day it arrives.
  • Can you stop revolving? If the same spending continues, you will soon have the loan and new card balances. Lower your card limits or keep only one card if that helps.
  • Does the EMI fit with room to spare? All EMIs together comfortably under half of take-home pay is a sensible ceiling.
  • Is there a cheaper fix? If a bonus or savings could clear the balance within two statements, that beats any loan.

Five yeses means consolidation is likely to save you money. Any no means fix that first.

Eligibility and documents

You can apply if you

  • Are salaried in India
  • Take home ₹40,000 or more a month
  • Have a credit score of 600 or more
  • Can carry the new EMI with your existing EMIs

Documents

  • 6-month bank statement of your salary account
  • Latest salary slip

Keep your card statements handy for your own planning.

High card utilisation often pulls a score down. Our credit officers read your full report, not only the number, so a score hurt mainly by utilisation is assessed in context; see how we assess scores from 600. A spouse or family member can also join as a co-applicant. Before signing you receive a Key Fact Statement with the rate, fees, APR and repayment schedule.

How to consolidate your cards, step by step

  1. List every card

Write down the outstanding, interest rate, due date and any card EMIs for each card from the latest statements.

  2. Apply for the total

Fill the online application and upload your salary-account statement and latest salary slip.

  3. Read the Key Fact Statement

Compare the APR with your cards’ rates, check the EMI date and any prepayment terms, then e-sign only if it saves you money.

  4. Pay every card the same day

The money arrives in your own account. Pay each card’s full outstanding, not the minimum, and keep the payment receipts.

  5. Lock the cards down

Lower limits, turn off international or online use you do not need, or close extra cards. Keep one card for planned spending you clear in full each month.

  6. Check the next statements

Confirm each card shows a zero or near-zero balance, and check your credit report a couple of months later to see utilisation fall.

Clear your cards with one fixed EMI

Apply for the total outstanding across your cards. You will see the exact rate, fees, APR and EMI in your Key Fact Statement before you sign, and Omozing never asks for an upfront fee.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying only the minimum on the cards after the loan arrives. Every card should be cleared in full the day the money lands.
  • Running the cards back up. The most common way consolidation fails. If spending is the root cause, set a monthly card budget below your limit.
  • Closing your oldest card without thinking. An old, unused card with a zero balance can help your credit history length. Close newer, high-fee cards first.
  • Choosing the longest tenure by default. A 36-month loan has a smaller EMI but more interest; pick the shortest EMI you can carry.
  • Ignoring the APR. Compare the all-in APR, not just the headline rate, so the processing fee is counted.
  • Paying an agent to “get” the loan. Omozing never asks for an upfront fee before approval. Report such demands to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.

Frequently asked questions

Does Omozing pay my credit card company directly?

No. Under RBI digital lending rules the loan is disbursed to your own bank account, and you pay each card’s outstanding yourself. Do it on the day the money arrives and keep the receipts.

Is a personal loan cheaper than credit card interest?

Usually, yes. Revolved card balances commonly attract around 2.5% to 4% a month, while Omozing personal loan rates start from 11% a year. Compare the APR in your Key Fact Statement with your card’s monthly rate times 12 to be sure.

Will consolidating my cards improve my credit score?

It can help over time, because card utilisation falls once the balances are cleared and you then repay one EMI on time. The new loan enquiry and account appear on your report too, and we cannot promise any particular score change.

Should I close my credit cards after paying them off?

Not necessarily. Closing extra or high-fee cards can reduce temptation, but an old card with a zero balance supports your credit history. Many people keep one card and clear it in full each month.

Can I include card EMIs and personal loans from apps?

You can use a personal loan to close card EMIs; check any foreclosure fee first. For several short-term loans from instant loan apps, SmartSwitch is designed specifically for that situation.

Can I get a card consolidation loan with a low CIBIL score?

Omozing considers scores from 600 with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more. A credit officer reads your full report, and a co-applicant can strengthen the application.

What if I have missed card payments already?

Apply as soon as you can, before the overdue grows. Recent missed payments are part of the assessment, and the earlier the cards are cleared, the sooner the late charges and interest stop.

Is a card balance transfer better than a personal loan?

It can be, if a low introductory rate covers the time you need to clear the balance and you account for the transfer fee. For larger balances or longer repayment, a fixed-EMI loan is usually easier to plan around.
