For a salaried borrower, the salary account is the single most revealing document in a loan file, and it is one of only two documents Omozing asks for. This guide, part of our salaried money playbook, walks through a statement line by line from a credit officer’s side of the desk. For the wider checklist of what lenders weigh beyond your score, see 5 things lenders check besides your credit score.
Why the salary account matters so much
Your credit report shows loans and cards reported by regulated lenders. Your salary account shows everything else: the actual salary, rent, school fees, SIPs, transfers to family, and the short-term app loans and “pay later” repayments that may not be on your report yet. It also confirms the income figure that every eligibility calculation starts from. That is why lenders ask for the account your salary is credited to, not your savings account with the best balance.
Reading a statement like a credit officer
Below is an illustrative month, not a real customer’s statement, with what each line typically signals.
| Date | Narration (illustrative) | Amount | What a credit officer reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | SALARY OCT ABC TECH PVT LTD | +₹62,400 | Employer name matches the slip; same date and similar amount as the last five months. Strong. |
| 3rd | NACH DR XYZ BANK LOAN | −₹8,200 | A running EMI, counted in FOIR. Cleared on the first attempt: good conduct. |
| 5th | UPI to landlord | −₹18,000 | Regular rent. Some lenders factor it into affordability. |
| 7th | NACH RTN INSUFFICIENT FUNDS | −₹590 charge | A bounced mandate. One in six months may be explained; repeated returns are a red flag. |
| 12th | CR from a lending app | +₹9,400 | A short-term loan, probably after a fee. Signals a mid-month gap. |
| 26th | UPI to the same lending app | −₹12,000 | Repayment two weeks later: an expensive cycle, and an obligation to count. |
| 30th | Closing balance | ₹640 | Little or no cushion before the next salary. |
Illustrative. Narrations differ by bank. The point is the pattern across six months, not a single line.
Nothing on this page is unusual, and none of it alone means a decline. Taken together, a credit officer would see a stable salary, one regular EMI, a recent bounce, and a habit of bridging the month with an app loan. The likely outcome is a smaller, more cautious offer, or a suggestion to consolidate. That is why our FOIR guide counts app-loan repayments as obligations.
Green flags and red flags
Green flags
- Salary on the same date each month, with the employer’s name in the narration
- Credits that match the payslip after PF and TDS
- EMIs and card dues paid on the first attempt
- Some balance left before payday, even ₹3,000–₹5,000
- Regular saving: an SIP or recurring deposit
Red flags
- Returned NACH or cheque bounces, especially in recent months
- Frequent credits and repayments to lending apps
- Salary moved out to another account the same day, every month
- Large unexplained cash deposits or withdrawals
- Payments to betting or gaming platforms
The six months before you apply
Lenders usually ask for the latest six months, so that is the window that counts. Here is what to keep steady through it.
A six-month runway for a clean salary account
A suggested sequence, not a requirement. If you need money urgently, apply now and explain any unusual entries; a credit officer at Omozing reads the full file, not just a score cut-off.
Common salary-account situations
“I recently changed my salary account.”
Share the statements of both accounts covering six months, plus a payslip showing the new bank. Lenders mainly need an unbroken salary history.
“I changed jobs in the last six months.”
Fine, as long as salary credits continue. Keep your offer letter and the first payslip from the new employer handy; a short gap with a notice-period settlement is common. If the move cost you money, see our notice period buyout loan page.
“My salary comes in two accounts or partly as reimbursements.”
Share every account that receives salary. Reimbursements are usually not treated as income, so don’t rely on them for eligibility.
“I move my salary to a savings account on day one.”
That’s allowed, but the lender then sees only transfers out. Share the second account’s statement too, so your EMIs and savings are visible.
“I had a bounce last month.”
Pay the dues, keep the receipt and say so upfront. One explained bounce is very different from a pattern. If your score has taken a hit, our Credit Score Booster programme can help you plan a recovery.
How lenders collect your statement, safely
You may be asked to upload a PDF from net banking, or to share it digitally through the RBI-regulated Account Aggregator framework, where you approve a specific consent for a specific period in your banking app. Either way, a regulated lender needs your statement, not your net-banking password or OTP. Never share login details, and never pay an “upfront fee” to have a loan processed; Omozing never asks for one. Under the RBI’s digital lending rules, the loan amount is credited straight to your bank account, and EMIs are usually collected by an e-mandate on the same account; see how e-NACH works.
Six calm months in your salary account speak louder than any explanation on a form.
Two documents. A credit officer who reads them properly.
Omozing asks salaried applicants for six months of salary-account statements and the latest salary slip. Take-home ₹40,000+, credit score from 600, loans up to ₹25 lakh, rates from 11% a year, with the full cost in the KFS.
Frequently asked questions
Why do lenders ask for six months of bank statements?
Six months shows whether your salary is regular, which EMIs and loan repayments you already pay, and how you manage money through the month. One month can be unusual; six show a pattern.
Do lenders check loan app transactions in my bank statement?
Yes. Credits from and repayments to lending apps are visible and are usually counted as obligations, even if the loan does not yet appear in your credit report.
Does one EMI bounce stop me getting a loan?
Not necessarily. A single bounce that was quickly paid and can be explained is treated very differently from repeated returns. Recent, frequent bounces weigh more heavily.
Can I give my savings account statement instead of my salary account?
Lenders need the account where your salary is credited, because it verifies your income. You can share additional accounts as well.
Is it safe to share my bank statement with a lender?
Share it only with an RBI-regulated lender, through its official app, website or the Account Aggregator framework. Never share net-banking passwords or OTPs, and never pay an upfront fee.
What balance should I keep in my salary account before applying?
There is no fixed minimum, but ending most months with a small positive balance, rather than near zero, shows that your income comfortably covers your spending.
