Omozing Answers › Co-applicants

Can a friend be a co-applicant on my personal loan?

Yes, with some lenders, including Omozing. Many lenders prefer a spouse or close family member as co-applicant, but some accept a friend if both of you pass the credit assessment. Your friend would usually share responsibility for the whole loan, and the loan would generally appear on their credit report too. That means your missed EMI becomes their late payment, and the joint EMI can reduce what they can borrow for themselves. It works best between friends who have talked through what happens if one of you can’t pay.

What changes the answer

The lender’s policy

Some lenders accept only family members as co-applicants; others accept friends. Ask before you apply, so neither of you takes an enquiry for nothing.

Your friend’s credit report

A clean, long history helps. Recent late payments on their side can hold the application back.

Their income and EMIs

A steady, verifiable salary with few EMIs of their own is what lifts your eligibility.

How settled both lives are

Friends move cities, change jobs and drift apart more easily than a household. Lenders read job tenure and stability for both of you.

An example: what the loan does to your friend’s own plans

Rahul (an illustrative profile, not a real customer) takes home ₹42,000 and already pays a ₹9,000 EMI. He needs ₹3 lakh over 24 months to move cities for a new job. At an example rate of 15% a year, the EMI is about ₹14,546. On his own, his EMIs would be about 56% of his pay, above the limit many lenders use. His college friend Kunal takes home ₹60,000 and pays an ₹8,000 car EMI. Together, all EMIs come to about 31% of their combined ₹1,02,000, which is far easier to approve.

Now look at it from Kunal’s side. If a future lender counts the full joint EMI against him, which is common, here is what changes:

Kunal before and after co-signing Rahul’s loan

EMIs as share of his pay 50% limit 13% 38% Before After Room for his own new EMI ₹22,000 ₹7,454 Before After Take-home ₹60,000 · car EMI ₹8,000 · joint EMI ₹14,546

Bars drawn to scale within each panel. An illustrative profile, not a real customer. Example rate of 15% a year, not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year. Lenders differ in how they count a joint EMI.

Before co-signing, a 50% limit would leave Kunal room for an EMI of ₹22,000, enough for an illustrative loan of about ₹6.43 lakh over 36 months at 14%. After, the room falls to about ₹7,454, or roughly ₹2.18 lakh. If Kunal plans a big loan of his own in the next two years, that is a real cost of helping a friend, even if Rahul never misses an EMI.

When it gets harder, and what helps

Think twice when:

What helps:

How lenders look at it

A lender assesses a friend exactly as it would a relative: income, existing EMIs, credit history and stability. What a friend lacks is a shared household, so some lenders are more cautious, and some don’t accept friends at all. Once the loan is approved, the relationship no longer matters to the lender: both of you are generally responsible for the full EMI, and both reports record every payment. If you fall out, you both stay on the loan until it is closed. See how a co-applicant’s score and yours interact and co-applicant vs co-borrower.

At Omozing: co-applicants are welcome: spouse, family members, and even friends. A credit officer reads the full credit report of both of you, not just the scores. What your friend needs to provide is confirmed during the application; ask us first at info@omozing.com or +91 88848 00789.

What most people get wrong: they think co-signing for a friend is risk-free if the friend always pays. Even with every EMI on time, the joint loan usually counts against your friend when they apply for their own loan, and a single missed EMI is generally marked on both reports.

Frequently asked questions

Do all lenders accept a friend as co-applicant?

No. Many prefer family members. Omozing accepts friends, subject to credit assessment of both of you.

Will the loan show on my friend’s credit report?

Generally yes, for the full amount, with every EMI recorded on both reports.

Can my friend be asked to pay if I don’t?

Usually yes. Co-applicants generally share responsibility for the whole loan, not half of it.

Does co-signing affect my friend’s future loans?

It can. A lender may count the full joint EMI against your friend, which reduces what they can borrow, as the example shows.

What if we fall out during the loan?

The lender’s terms don’t change. You both stay responsible until the loan is closed, so agree on a plan before you sign.
