Omozing Answers › Co-applicants
Written by the Omozing Credit Team, which includes IIT and IIM alumni · Reviewed for accuracy by our credit and compliance team · Updated October 2026
How badly your co-applicant is affected depends less on the loan’s size than on what happens next:
One EMI a few days late is a small mark. Three months unpaid moves the loan towards non-performing status on both reports.
If your co-applicant steps in and clears the overdue amount, the damage to both reports stops growing.
A borrower who explains early and agrees a plan is in a very different position from one who goes silent.
A co-applicant about to apply for their own home or car loan feels the damage sooner. How a joint loan shows up in their future applications.
Gautam borrows ₹3,50,000 over 30 months with his cousin Anjali as co-applicant, at an example rate of 14% a year. The EMI is ₹13,894. After paying 10 EMIs he loses his job and stops; about ₹2,46,575 of principal is still outstanding. This is an illustrative profile, not a real customer.
Illustrative: ₹3,50,000 over 30 months at an example 14% a year (not an offer). SMA-0/1/2 = 1–30, 31–60 and 61–90 days overdue; NPA = 90+ days.
Notice two things. First, Anjali’s report gets the same marks in the same months, although she had no say in Gautam losing his job. Second, the lender’s claim is not limited to “her half”. If nobody pays, it can generally pursue either of them for the overdue EMIs and, later, the full ₹2.47 lakh outstanding. More on how the stages work: what DPD and SMA mean.
To a lender, a co-applicant is not a back-up that is called only at the very end: they are a borrower on the same contract. Lenders must notify you before reporting a default to a bureau, and under RBI digital lending rules recovery has to be fair, without harassment. Within those rules, the lender looks to whoever on the loan can pay. A co-applicant who stays in touch and helps agree a plan is generally treated very differently from one who ignores calls. If you are a co-applicant facing this, read whether lenders must warn you before reporting a default.
At Omozing: co-applicants are welcome: spouse, family members, and even friends, and a credit officer reads the full credit report of both. The exact terms that apply to you and your co-applicant are set out in your Key Fact Statement and loan agreement before you sign. If a payment is at risk, email info@omozing.com or call +91 88848 00789 before the due date.
Pick an EMI you could carry on your own. Salaried, take-home ₹40,000 or more, credit score from 600; loans up to ₹25 lakh over 3 to 36 months.
Usually yes. Co-applicants generally share responsibility for the whole loan, so the lender can ask either of you for the overdue EMIs and the outstanding amount.
Usually yes. The joint loan generally appears on both reports, so a missed EMI is recorded against both of you.
Lenders may contact any borrower on the loan, but recovery must be fair and free of harassment under RBI rules. Complain to the lender and, if needed, the RBI Ombudsman.
Clearing the overdue amount stops further late marks. Earlier marks stay on both reports but weigh less as on-time payments build up.
Generally not on their own. A lender rarely releases a co-applicant from a loan in arrears; the usual way out is clearing or closing the loan.
