Overdue loans move through stages. Lenders track how many days past due (DPD) an EMI is, and classify the account as SMA-0, SMA-1 or SMA-2 as the days add up. After 90 days it becomes a non-performing asset (NPA). Each stage makes the next lender more cautious, and a reported default stays visible for years.
Simplified. The rules require notice before a default is reported, but don’t rely on it as your first warning: overdue days usually reach your report from the next reporting date.
Lenders typically send it by SMS, email or letter to the contact details on your loan account. Treat it as the last practical window to protect your report.
A lender that reports a default without notifying you has not followed the process, and you can complain. Be clear about what that complaint can achieve. If the overdue is real, the data on your report may still be accurate, and accurate information can’t be removed. What you can ask for is a correction of anything wrong, a fair look at your situation, and a response on the missing notice.
State the account, the date the default was reported, and that you received no notice. Ask for a copy of any notice they say they sent, with the address or number used.
If the amount, dates or status are wrong, raise a bureau dispute. It must be resolved within 30 days, or you are owed ₹100 a day. How to dispute.
If the lender doesn’t reply in 30 days, or you’re unhappy with the reply, file at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days. It covers banks, NBFCs with assets of ₹100 crore or more, and credit bureaus. How the Ombudsman works.

Yes. RBI’s credit-reporting rules require lenders to notify you before reporting a default to a credit bureau.
It can. Overdue days are usually reported at the next reporting date, and lenders now report four times a month.
A missing notice is a valid complaint about the lender’s process, but accurate default information isn’t removed because of it. Wrong details can be corrected.
