Omozing Answers › Your rights

What are my rights over my credit data?

In short: You can read your full credit report free once a year from each of the four bureaus, and you get an SMS or email whenever your report is accessed. If anything is wrong, you can have it corrected free, within 30 days, and if the fix is late you’re owed ₹100 for every day of delay. A lender must notify you before reporting a default. If the lender or bureau doesn’t sort out your complaint, you can go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman. What you can’t do is have accurate negative information removed, by anyone, for any fee.

The ₹100 a day is paid by whoever caused the delay, the lender or the bureau. It covers lateness, not disagreement: if the dispute is resolved on time but you don’t like the answer, the compensation rule doesn’t apply, though the Ombudsman route does. More in compensation for a late fix.

The 2026 Ombudsman, and what it can award

1 Jul 2026RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026 takes effect
₹30 lakhMaximum award for financial loss
₹3 lakhMaximum extra award for harassment or loss of time

The scheme covers commercial banks, NBFCs with assets of ₹100 crore or more, non-bank prepaid instrument issuers and credit information companies, so you can complain about a bureau directly. Complain to the bank, NBFC or bureau first. If there’s no reply in 30 days, or you’re unhappy with it, you have 90 days to file. Complaints filed before 1 July 2026 stay under the 2021 scheme. See how the Ombudsman handles credit report complaints.

What most people get wrong: they believe the right to a “correct” report means the right to a clean one. It doesn’t. Your rights are to accurate data, to see it, and to have mistakes fixed quickly. A genuine late payment, settlement or write-off is accurate, and no bureau, lender or paid agent can remove it. It does weigh less as it ages, and bureaus keep at least seven years of history.

Rights work best with a few habits

  1. Check all four reports every year

Spread them out, one every three months, so you’re looking at a fresh report each quarter.

  2. Never ignore an access alert

An enquiry you didn’t make can be the first sign of identity fraud. Dispute it, and if money is involved, call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in. Removing an enquiry you didn’t make.

  3. Keep a paper trail

Save NOCs, closure letters, dispute reference numbers and dates. They are what make a complaint succeed.

  4. Don’t pay for what’s free

Disputes and corrections cost nothing. Anyone charging to “repair” your report can’t do more than you can.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see my credit report for free?

Yes. Each of the four bureaus must give you one free full credit report every calendar year.

Will I know if someone checks my credit report?

Yes. Bureaus send an SMS or email alert when your report is accessed, so keep your contact details current.

How long does a bureau have to fix an error?

30 days in total: 21 days for the lender and 9 days for the bureau. After that you’re owed ₹100 per calendar day of delay.

Can I complain about a credit bureau to the RBI?

Yes. Credit information companies are covered by the RBI Integrated Ombudsman. Complain to the bureau first, then file at cms.rbi.org.in if it isn’t resolved.

Not if they’re accurate. Only errors can be corrected. Accurate entries stay visible for years but weigh less as they age.
