What changed in credit reporting in 2026?

In short: Two changes took effect on 1 July 2026. Lenders now report your loans to the credit bureaus four times a month (on the 9th, 16th and 23rd and the last day), up from every fortnight, so payments and mistakes reach your report within about one to two weeks. And a new RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026 now handles complaints against banks, larger NBFCs and credit bureaus. These sit on top of protections already in force: disputes resolved within 30 days with ₹100 a day if late, alerts when your report is accessed, and notice before a default is reported.

What did not change

Accurate entries stay

Faster reporting doesn’t wipe history. Bureaus hold at least seven years of loan history, and true negative entries remain visible for years, weighing less as they age.

Only errors are corrected

Nobody can remove accurate negative information for a fee. Errors are corrected free. About paid “repair”.

One free report a year

You still get one free full report from each of the four bureaus every calendar year. How to get it.

Checking is still harmless

Looking at your own score is a soft enquiry with no effect, however often you check.

What most people get wrong: they hear “faster reporting” and expect faster forgiveness. The new rules speed up how quickly accurate data reaches your report, good and bad. A late payment now lands on your report sooner, and it still stays there. What changed in your favour is how quickly a fix shows, and how much recourse you have when one doesn’t.

Something wrong on your report?

The 2026 rules make fixes show faster. Start with a free dispute, resolved within 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

How often do lenders report to CIBIL in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, four times a month: on the 9th, 16th and 23rd and the last day of the month. Before that it was every fortnight, and monthly before January 2025.

Is the 30-day dispute rule new in 2026?

No. The 30-day limit and ₹100-a-day compensation have applied since 26 April 2024. They continue alongside the 2026 changes.

Does the new Ombudsman scheme cover credit bureaus?

Yes. The 2026 scheme covers credit information companies, as well as commercial banks, NBFCs with assets of ₹100 crore or more and non-bank PPI issuers.

Will my old defaults disappear under the new rules?

No. Accurate history stays on your report; bureaus hold at least seven years of loan history. Old entries weigh less as they age.

Do the 2026 rules change how my score is calculated?

They change how often your data is updated and how complaints are handled. The things that move your score, such as on-time payments and card use, are the same.
