How much work experience do I need for a personal loan?

In short: There is no single rule. Lenders usually look at two numbers: your total work experience and how long you have been with your current employer, and each lender sets its own minimums. What they are really checking is whether your salary is regular and likely to continue through the loan. A recent job switch is usually fine if your salary credits are steady; a gap between jobs or only a month or two of salary makes the assessment harder.

What changes the answer

Total experience

Years in salaried work across employers. It shows you can stay employed, even if you move.

Time with current employer

Months since joining. A very new job means the lender has little salary history from it.

Gaps between jobs

A month with no salary credit shows on your statement and lowers any average the lender takes.

Direction of the move

A switch for higher pay in the same field reads very differently from frequent moves at flat pay.

Probation

Some lenders are more cautious while you are still on probation at a new employer.

Credit history

A long, clean repayment record can reassure a lender when job tenure is short.

An example

Nikhil is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. He is a quality engineer with four years’ total experience. He left one manufacturer at the end of June, joined another in August, and his take-home rose from ₹52,000 to ₹65,000. July had no salary credit. He pays a ₹6,000 bike EMI. Here is his salary-account statement for May to October 2026:

Six months of salary credits, with a job switch in the middle

₹52,000 ₹52,000 No credit ₹65,000 ₹65,000 ₹65,000 MayJunJul AugSepOct Old employer New employer Gap between jobs

Bars drawn to scale. An illustrative profile; the gap marker is not a value.

Lenders read a statement like this in different ways. Some take the latest salary, some an average of recent credits, some the lower, older figure until the new job has run longer. With a 50% FOIR, his ₹6,000 EMI, 14% a year and 36 months (examples, not an offer):

How the income is readIncome usedRoom for a new EMILoan it supports
Old salary, until the new job settles₹52,000₹20,000≈ ₹5.85 lakh
Average of the five months with credits₹59,800₹23,900≈ ₹6.99 lakh
Latest salary₹65,000₹26,500≈ ₹7.75 lakh

Example rate of 14% a year and a 50% FOIR, not an offer. Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year.

The switch helped Nikhil: every reading is above where he started. But the gap and the short time at the new employer mean the figure he gets could sit anywhere in a ₹1.9 lakh range. Waiting a few more months of ₹65,000 credits narrows it. For the score side of a job move, see does changing jobs affect your credit score.

How lenders look at it

Work experience is a stand-in for one question: will this salary keep arriving for the length of the loan? Total experience shows you stay employable; time with the current employer shows the present income is settled; the salary-account statement shows both in rupees and dates. A short tenure is rarely a problem on its own when pay is steady and rising.

At Omozing

We lend only to salaried individuals, with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more a month and a credit score from 600. You need your last 6 months’ salary-account bank statement, your latest salary slip, and PAN and Aadhaar for KYC, so the statement shows your recent salary history, including any switch. A credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score. Recently changed jobs? Email us at info@omozing.com. More in our eligibility FAQ.

What most people get wrong: they think a job change resets them to zero. For most lenders it doesn’t. A move to higher pay with no long gap often strengthens the picture; it is gaps and irregular credits that weaken it.

Salary credits steady?

Take-home ₹40,000 or more and a credit score from 600: loans up to ₹25 lakh over 3 to 36 months, rates from 11% a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan in my first job?

With some lenders, once you have a few months of salary credits. A thin credit history may mean a smaller first loan.

I changed jobs last month. Should I wait?

If the need can wait, a few months of credits from the new employer make your income easier to verify. If it can’t, explain the switch when you apply.

Does a gap between jobs hurt my application?

A short gap is common and can be explained. Longer gaps lower any average income the lender takes and raise questions about stability.

Does Omozing need a minimum work experience?

Our published criteria are salaried employment, a take-home of ₹40,000 or more a month and a credit score from 600; your 6-month salary-account statement shows your recent salary history.

Do internships or contract work count?

It depends on the lender. Regular, bank-credited salary from an employer is what most lenders look for.
