Omozing Answers › FOIR and existing EMIs

Will closing a small loan before I apply improve my eligibility?

Often yes, and by more than the loan is worth. Lenders size a new loan on the EMI room left under their cap, so closing a loan frees its whole EMI. A small balance with a big EMI is the best one to close: in our illustration, paying off ₹18,000 frees ₹6,500 a month and lifts eligibility by about ₹1.9 lakh. It only helps once the closure shows on your credit report, and it is worth it only if the foreclosure charge is small and you are not emptying your emergency savings to do it.

What changes the answer

EMI freed per rupee repaid

Divide the EMI by the amount still owed. The higher the ratio, the more eligibility each rupee of payoff buys.

Whether FOIR is what’s holding you back

If you already have room for the EMI you need, closing a loan changes little. It matters when the cap is the limit.

Foreclosure charge

Many loans charge a percentage for closing early. On a small balance it is small; on a large one it can wipe out the benefit.

Report timing

The new lender reads your credit report. Until the loan shows as closed, it is likely still counted.

An example: which loan should Imtiaz close?

Imtiaz is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. He takes home ₹55,000 a month and pays two EMIs: ₹6,500 on a consumer-durable loan with ₹18,000 still owed (about three instalments left) and ₹5,200 on a two-wheeler loan with ₹1,40,000 still owed. At a 50% cap his ceiling is ₹27,500, so ₹15,800 is left for a new EMI, about ₹4.62 lakh at an example 14% a year over 36 months. He has some savings and wonders which loan to clear.

Cash needed versus eligibility gained

Cash needed to close Consumer-durable loan ₹18,000 Two-wheeler loan ₹1,40,000 Extra loan eligibility gained Close consumer-durable loan +₹1.90 lakh Close two-wheeler loan +₹1.52 lakh Each panel is drawn to its own scale.

Illustrative: ₹55,000 take-home, 50% FOIR, example rate 14% a year (not an offer; Omozing’s rates start from 11% a year), 36 months, rounded down to the nearest ₹1,000. Foreclosure charges not included.

Close the two-wheeler loan₹1,40,000₹371₹21,000₹6,14,000

The small loan wins easily: less than an eighth of the cash, a bigger gain. And since it ends in about three months anyway, Imtiaz has a second option that costs nothing: wait for the last instalment, then apply. Closing early only makes sense if he needs the money sooner.

How to close it so the new lender sees it

  1. Ask for the closure amount in writing

Request the full outstanding and any foreclosure charge. Check your loan agreement for the charge.

  2. Pay from savings, not from another loan

Borrowing from an app to close a loan adds an enquiry and a new account, which defeats the purpose.

  3. Get the closure letter or NOC

Keep it with your statement showing the final payment. If the loan still shows as active, this is your proof.

  4. Check your report, then apply

Lenders now report four times a month, so updates typically show in about one to two weeks.

When it gets harder, and what helps

How lenders look at it

A lender counts the obligations it can see on your credit report and in your salary-account statement. A loan with three instalments left still counts until it is closed. Once it shows as closed, its EMI drops out of the sum, while its repayment history stays on your report.

At Omozing

A credit officer reads your full credit report, not just the score. If the loan you want to close is with us: you can foreclose your loan (repay the full outstanding early). A foreclosure charge of 4%–6% applies, especially on longer tenures; the exact charge is in your KFS and loan agreement. We don’t offer part-prepayment.

What most people get wrong: they pay down a big loan because it “feels” like the main debt. Eligibility moves with EMIs, not balances, so the small loan with the large EMI is usually the one to clear.

Freed up some EMI room?

Salaried, take-home ₹40,000 or more, credit score from 600: check your offer. Loans up to ₹25 lakh over 3 to 36 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does closing a loan early hurt my credit score?

Closing a loan you have repaid on time is generally not a problem. Its repayment history stays on your report.

How soon after closing can I apply?

Once your report shows the loan as closed. With lenders reporting four times a month, that is typically about one to two weeks.

Should I close a credit card EMI conversion too?

Card EMIs count like any EMI, so a small one with a large monthly instalment is a good candidate. See card dues in FOIR.

Is it better to close a loan or choose a longer tenure?

Closing a small loan frees room without adding interest; a longer tenure frees room but costs more interest over time.

Can the new loan pay off the old one?

Some lenders allow it, but the old EMI is usually counted until it is closed. Ask first, and see our FOIR questions.

Next questions people ask:

Can I get another loan if my existing EMIs are already high? Why doesn’t my salary alone decide how much I can borrow? Does paying off a loan early improve my CIBIL score?
