How do I get a closure certificate from a loan app?

Ask for it in writing as soon as your final payment clears. Look for a download in the app’s loan details first; if there is none, email the lender’s support or grievance address from your Key Fact Statement or loan agreement. The letter should name you, the lender, the loan account number and the closure date, and say nothing is outstanding. Save it with your payment proof. If it doesn’t come, escalate to the lender’s grievance officer, then check your credit report shows the loan as closed.

What changes the answer

Who the lender is

The certificate that counts comes from the bank or NBFC named in your Key Fact Statement, not just the app’s brand.

Every rupee is paid

A small leftover, such as a late charge or a few days’ interest, can keep the loan open. Ask for the exact closing amount first.

Automatic or on request

Some apps offer a download once the loan closes; others send one only when you ask.

Unregistered apps

An app with no regulated lender behind it may never issue one. Your payment proof becomes your evidence.

Why you need it

To fix your credit report, to show a new lender the loan is closed, or to share as an NOC when you consolidate.

Auto-debit still active

A repayment mandate that is not cancelled can try to debit again after closure. See stopping a loan app’s auto-debit.

What a good closure certificate shows

A made-up example, annotated

Sample Lending Finance Ltd (fictional) NO DUES CERTIFICATE Borrower: D. Example Loan account no.: SL-000000-X Loan closed on: 14 October 2026 We confirm that the above loan is fully repaid and no dues are outstanding. Authorised signatory 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 The lender’s legal name, the bank or NBFC, not only the app 2 Your name as on your KYC 3 The loan account number 4 The date the loan closed 5 A clear “fully repaid, no dues outstanding” line 6 A signature, stamp or digitally signed PDF

A made-up example from a fictional lender. Real letters vary in layout and may be called a no-dues certificate, NOC or closure letter.

An example: Deepika closes three apps

Deepika is an illustrative profile, not a real customer. In one week she repays three app loans of ₹12,000, ₹18,000 and ₹9,000, ₹39,000 in total. She keeps a simple tracker so nothing is left half-closed.

LoanAmountPayment proof savedClosure letterReport shows closed?
App 1₹12,000Yes, with transaction referenceDownloaded in the appYes
App 2₹18,000YesNot offered; emailed support, then the grievance officerYes, after the letter
App 3₹9,000YesReceivedNo: still “active”; disputed with the letter

Illustrative. Disputes must be resolved within 30 days. See my closed loan still shows as active.

For App 2 she sent a short email: “I repaid loan account [number] in full on [date], transaction reference [number]. Please send a no-dues certificate confirming the loan is closed with nothing outstanding, and confirm the closure will be reported to the credit bureaus.” Writing it down gave her a dated record to escalate from.

When it gets harder, and what helps

How lenders look at it

A new lender trusts the credit report first. Because lenders report four times a month and updates typically show one to two weeks later, a loan you closed recently can still look open. A closure letter bridges that gap, and when you consolidate, it is the proof that the old debt really is gone.

At Omozing

With SmartSwitch, the money goes to your own bank account; you close each app loan and share the NOCs. That is why collecting a closure letter for every app matters: it is what completes the switch. What most people get wrong: “The app shows ₹0, so I’m done.” A ₹0 screen inside an app is not a closure record, and screens can change or vanish. Get a letter from the lender, save it outside the app, and check that your credit report agrees.

Replace them with one EMI, or plan the order you close them in.

Frequently asked questions

Is a no-dues certificate the same as an NOC or closure letter?

For a personal or app loan they usually serve the same purpose: written confirmation from the lender that the loan is fully repaid and closed.

How long does a loan app take to issue a closure certificate?

It varies by lender. Ask as soon as your final payment clears, and escalate in writing if it does not arrive.

Can a loan app refuse to give a closure certificate?

A regulated lender should confirm a loan that is fully repaid. If it does not respond, escalate to its grievance officer and then the RBI Integrated Ombudsman.

Do I need the certificate if my report already shows closed?

Keep it anyway. It protects you if the status changes by mistake later or a new lender asks for proof.
