Most “top 10 personal loan lenders” lists rank brands by advertised starting rate. That number goes to a small slice of applicants with excellent scores and large employers, so a list built on it tells you little about what you will be offered. This guide does something more useful: it explains the types of lenders in India, the ten things to compare, and a simple way to shortlist lenders for your own profile. We don’t rank other lenders, and we haven’t been paid by any of them. Omozing appears once, clearly labelled as our own product.
The four kinds of personal loan lenders in India
Public sector banks
Examples include State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda. Often competitive for government and large-company employees and existing customers. Processes can be slower and stricter on credit score.
Private sector banks
Examples include Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Fast digital journeys and pre-approved offers for salary-account holders; scores of 700+ are usually preferred.
NBFCs and digital lenders
RBI-registered non-bank lenders such as Aditya Birla Capital, Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital and many smaller specialists. Often more flexible on score, income proof or loan size; pricing varies widely.
Loan marketplaces
Platforms that show offers from several partner lenders. They don’t lend themselves; the loan is always made by a bank or NBFC, which must be named in your Key Fact Statement.
Names are examples listed alphabetically within each group. This is not a ranking or an endorsement, and we have not verified each lender’s current terms. Check every lender’s official website for its latest rates and eligibility.
The 10 things to compare (instead of a top-10 list)
Regulation
Is the lender an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC? If you’re applying through an app, the app must name the lender. You can check apps in the RBI’s directory; see our guide to checking RBI-registered loan apps.
APR
The annual percentage rate in the Key Fact Statement includes interest and fees. It is the only fair way to compare two offers.
Processing fee and GST
A fee deducted upfront means you receive less but repay on the full amount.
Prepayment and foreclosure charges
Matters if you expect a bonus or plan to close early. Some lenders charge a percentage of the outstanding principal for a period.
Eligibility fit
Minimum credit score, income and employer type. Applying where you don’t fit only adds a hard enquiry to your report.
Loan amount and tenure
Can the lender give the amount you need over a tenure that keeps the EMI comfortable?
Documents and speed
How many documents, how much verification, and how long until money reaches your account.
How the decision is made
Some lenders apply automated score cut-offs; others have a credit officer read your full report. This matters most if your score is in the 600s.
Transparency and conduct
Clear KFS, a named grievance officer, fair recovery practices, and no requests for upfront fees before approval.
Service after disbursal
Easy statements, foreclosure letters and NOCs, and a working complaints channel. Read recent customer reviews with care.
Why the lowest rate isn’t always the cheapest loan
Here are three illustrative offers for the same ₹3 lakh loan over 24 months. The one with the lowest headline rate turns out to be the most expensive once the processing fee is counted.
Total cost of a ₹3 lakh, 24-month loan: three illustrative offers
Illustrative offers, not quotes from any lender. Total cost = interest on a reducing-balance EMI plus processing fee with 18% GST. APR is the annualised rate on the amount actually received. EMIs: about ₹13,982 (A), ₹14,192 (B), ₹14,404 (C).
Compare the APR in the Key Fact Statement, not the rate in the advert.
Which type of lender suits which borrower
| Your profile | Where to start | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Score 750+, large employer, salary account with a bank | Your own bank’s pre-approved offer, then one or two other banks | Prepayment charges; insurance bundled into the loan |
| Score 700–750, steady salary | Private banks and larger NBFCs; a marketplace to compare | Too many applications in a short time |
| Score 600–700, salaried | NBFCs that read the full report; adding a co-applicant | High processing fees; lenders asking for money upfront |
| No credit history | Your salary bank, small first loans, a secured card | Expensive short-term app loans |
| Several app loans already running | Consolidation into one EMI | Rolling one app loan into another |
If your score is low or thin, read what credit score lenders look for before you apply anywhere, and avoid a string of applications that each leave a hard enquiry.
How to shortlist lenders in 20 minutes
If you’d rather see several offers in one place, a loan marketplace can help. FundsTiger, our sister company, is one such marketplace; there are others. Whatever route you take, the lender named in your KFS should be RBI-regulated.
Red flags: lenders to walk away from
- Asks for a “processing”, “insurance” or “file charge” before approval. Omozing never asks for upfront fees before approval, and neither should any regulated lender.
- The app or caller can’t name the bank or NBFC that is lending.
- No Key Fact Statement, or a KFS with blanks.
- Asks for access to your contacts, call logs or photos; RBI rules don’t allow this.
- Money comes from, or must be repaid to, a personal account or a third party’s account.
- Threatening recovery messages, or calls to your family and friends.

Where Omozing fits (our product)
Omozing is the digital lending brand of Aparampaar Finance Private Limited, an RBI-registered NBFC. We are one option among many, built for a specific borrower: salaried people with a credit score in roughly the 600–730 range, which many banks treat as a hard cut-off.
Two documents (a six-month salary-account statement and your latest salary slip), a credit officer who reads your full report, and co-applicants welcome. The processing fee is 3%–7% plus GST, shown in the KFS before you sign. Approval is subject to assessment. If your score is above 750 and your bank has a pre-approved offer, compare it with ours honestly; it may be cheaper.
Is your score between 600 and 730?

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best personal loan lender in India?
There is no single best lender for everyone. The right lender is an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC that approves your profile at the lowest APR with fair prepayment terms. Compare two or three lenders whose eligibility you clearly meet.
Are banks always cheaper than NBFCs for personal loans?
Not always. Banks often price lowest for high scores and large employers, but processing fees, insurance add-ons and prepayment charges can change the picture. Compare the APR in each Key Fact Statement.
How many lenders should I apply to?
Shortlist about three, compare their terms, and apply to one at a time. Several applications in a short period each leave a hard enquiry and can lower your score.
How do I check if a loan app or lender is genuine?
Make sure the app names its bank or NBFC lender, check the lender’s RBI registration and the RBI’s directory of digital lending apps, and never pay any fee before approval.
What is APR and why does it matter?
The annual percentage rate combines interest and fees into one yearly figure. A loan with a low rate but a high processing fee can have a higher APR than a loan with a slightly higher rate and no fee.
Can I get a personal loan with a credit score below 700?
Yes, from some lenders. Omozing considers salaried applicants with a score from 600 and a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, subject to assessment. Adding a co-applicant can help.
