What a CIBIL dispute is, and when to raise one
A CIBIL dispute is a formal request to correct information in your credit report that you believe is wrong. It is free, it does not hurt your score, and you do not need an agent to file it.
A dispute is for errors, not for genuine history you dislike. A late payment that really happened, or a loan you really settled, will not be removed by a dispute. But mistakes are more common than most people think: a loan you closed still shows as active, someone else’s credit card appears in your file, or an overdue you cleared months ago is still reported.
Types of CIBIL disputes
| Dispute type | Examples | Proof that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | A loan or card that is not yours; a duplicate of your own account | A statement that you never applied; police complaint if you suspect identity misuse |
| Account status | Closed loan shown as active; “settled” or “written off” when you paid in full | No-dues certificate or NOC, closure letter, final payment proof |
| Amounts and payment history | Wrong overdue amount; late payments in months you paid on time | Bank statements showing EMI debits, lender’s account statement |
| Personal details | Wrong name spelling, date of birth, PAN or gender | PAN card, Aadhaar, passport |
| Contact details | Old or unknown addresses, phone numbers, emails | Current address proof |
| Enquiries | Hard enquiries from lenders you never applied to | Your statement; check for identity misuse |
Personal and contact details can usually be updated by CIBIL directly. Account information, the part that drives your score, can only be changed after the lender that reported it confirms the correction.
How to raise a CIBIL dispute online, step by step
CIBIL’s screens change from time to time, but the flow has stayed the same in substance.
Get your latest report
Log in or register on cibil.com with your PAN and mobile number. You can use the free annual report. Note the control number on the report; it identifies that version.
Open the Dispute Centre
Go to the dispute section of your account and choose to raise a new dispute on your current report.
Select the wrong entry
Pick the section (personal details, contact details, account details or enquiries) and the specific account or field that is wrong.
Say what is wrong and what it should be
Choose the dispute type and write a short, factual explanation. Use the template below.
Submit and note the dispute ID
You will get a dispute ID by email. Keep it with your screenshots; you will need it to track and escalate.
Contact the lender in parallel
Email the lender’s grievance officer with the same facts and proof. Lenders that act quickly shorten the whole process.
If you prefer, you can also write to CIBIL with a copy of your report and your proof, but online disputes are faster and easier to track. Disputes about a company’s commercial report are handled through CIBIL’s separate commercial dispute process.
What happens after you submit: the 30-day timeline
Under the RBI’s framework for credit information complaints, the lender has 21 days to respond to the bureau, and the bureau has a further 9 days to update your report or tell you why not. If the complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days of being filed, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 for each day of delay, paid by whichever party caused it.
The CIBIL dispute timeline under RBI rules
Based on the RBI framework for delayed updating or correction of credit information. Bars are proportional to days (18 px per day). The timeline runs from the date your complaint is lodged.
There are three possible outcomes. The lender agrees and the bureau corrects the report; the lender disagrees and the dispute is closed with the entry unchanged; or the lender does not respond, in which case escalation and compensation rules apply. Check the updated report once the dispute closes, and check the other three bureaus too, because the lender has to correct its data at each.

Dispute description for the CIBIL form
Loan account ending 4821 with [Lender name] was closed on 15 March 2026 after full repayment. The report still shows it as active with ₹12,400 overdue. The NOC dated 18 March 2026 is attached. Please update the status to closed with zero balance.
Email to the lender’s grievance officer
Subject: Incorrect credit bureau reporting, loan account ending 4821. I repaid this loan in full on 15 March 2026 and received your NOC on 18 March 2026 (attached). CIBIL still shows the account as active with ₹12,400 overdue. I have raised CIBIL dispute ID [number]. Please correct the data with all four credit bureaus and confirm in writing.

Documents to keep ready
- The credit report showing the error, with its control number.
- NOC or no-dues certificate, and the loan closure letter.
- Bank statements showing the EMI or settlement payments.
- PAN and address proof for personal-detail corrections.
- Screenshots and emails of every step, with dates.
If your dispute is rejected or ignored
Avoid “credit repair” agents who promise to delete genuine defaults for a fee. Nobody can legally remove accurate information. Our CIBIL dispute resolution page explains how bureaus and lenders handle corrections, and if your score is low for genuine reasons, the Credit Score Booster programme helps you rebuild it the right way.
After the fix: using your corrected score
Once the error is gone, give it a reporting cycle, pull a fresh report and confirm the change before you apply anywhere. If your corrected score is 600 or more and you are salaried with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, Omozing may be able to help: see our guide to a personal loan with a CIBIL score from 600.
Score still low after the correction?
Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600. A credit officer reads your full report, including the context of any past disputes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I raise a CIBIL dispute online?
Log in to your account on cibil.com, open the Dispute Centre, select the incorrect entry, choose the dispute type, explain the correction and submit with proof. You will receive a dispute ID by email.
How long does a CIBIL dispute take?
Under RBI rules, a credit information complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days: up to 21 days for the lender and 9 days for the bureau. Delays beyond that attract compensation of ₹100 a day.
How do I check my CIBIL dispute status?
Log in to your CIBIL account and open the Dispute Centre, where open and closed disputes are listed with their status. Keep your dispute ID handy.
Is there a fee to raise a CIBIL dispute?
No. Raising a dispute with CIBIL is free. Be wary of anyone charging to remove entries from your report.
Can a CIBIL dispute remove a genuine late payment or settlement?
No. Disputes correct errors only. Accurate history stays on the report, though its effect fades as you build a record of on-time payments.
What if CIBIL rejects my dispute?
Check the reason, add missing proof and raise it again, escalate to the lender’s grievance and nodal officers, and if it is still unresolved after 30 days, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Can I raise a dispute for a company’s commercial CIBIL report?
Yes. CIBIL has a separate dispute process for commercial credit reports, which the company or its authorised representative can use.
