Why the source matters
Searching for “check credit score free” brings up dozens of apps and websites. Many are genuine, but they vary a lot in what they show, how often they refresh and what they do with your data. Some only show a score from one bureau; some show a simplified summary instead of the full report; some use your free check to market loans and cards to you.
There is no need to guess. The official sources are free, and they are the only ones that can correct an error on your report. This page lists them, explains what each is good for, and shows where Omozing’s own guides fit in. We have not ranked them, because they do different jobs.
The four credit bureaus: your primary source
India has four credit information companies licensed by the RBI. Banks and NBFCs report your loans and cards to them, usually monthly, and each calculates its own score on a 300 to 900 scale. Your scores can differ slightly between bureaus because not every lender reports to all four, and each uses its own model.
TransUnion CIBIL
The bureau most Indians know by name, and the one many lenders check first. Offers a free annual report, paid subscriptions and an online dispute process. cibil.com
Experian India
Provides a free credit report and score, with its own explanations of the factors behind your score. experian.in
Equifax India
Another RBI-licensed bureau offering a free annual report and a dispute channel. equifax.co.in
CRIF High Mark
Holds strong data on microfinance and smaller loans, so it can matter if your history includes those. Free annual report available. crifhighmark.com
Check each bureau’s own website for its current free-report process. Always type the address yourself or use a bookmark rather than clicking a link in an SMS or WhatsApp message.
How to get your free full report
You are entitled to one free full credit report, including your score, from each bureau every calendar year. That is four free reports a year. A practical routine is to pull one bureau’s report every three months, so you are never more than a quarter away from spotting a problem.
When you have it, read the whole report, not just the number. Our guide to reading your CIBIL report like a pro walks through each section, and what creates a good CIBIL score explains which parts move your score most.
The RBI: rules, rights and complaints
The Reserve Bank of India regulates the credit bureaus and the banks and NBFCs that report to them. Its resources are dry, but they tell you your rights.
- RBI website (rbi.org.in): circulars and consumer FAQs on credit information companies, digital lending and fair practices.
- RBI complaint portal (cms.rbi.org.in): if a bank, NBFC or credit bureau doesn’t resolve your complaint, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman here.
- Sachet (sachet.rbi.org.in): check whether an entity is regulated and report unauthorised lenders or deposit schemes.
- Cybercrime helpline: if you are targeted by a fake “credit score fix” or loan scam, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in.
Which resource for which job
| You want to… | Best free resource | Why |
|---|---|---|
| See your full report and score | Each bureau’s official site | The original data, with every account and enquiry |
| Track your score monthly | Your bank’s app or a reputable fintech app | Convenient, but often a single bureau and a summary view |
| Correct an error | The bureau’s dispute process | Only the bureau and the reporting lender can change the data |
| Escalate an unresolved complaint | RBI complaint portal | The RBI Ombudsman covers regulated entities |
| Check whether a lender is genuine | RBI Sachet and the lender’s own disclosures | Confirms who regulates the entity |
| Understand what to do next | Plain-language guides (such as ours) | Turns the report into an action plan |
Free score apps: what to watch for
Banks, card issuers and fintech apps often show your score for free. They are useful for keeping an eye on trends, and checking your own score this way does not lower it. Before you sign up, check:
- Which bureau the score comes from, and how often it refreshes.
- Whether you see the full report or only a summary.
- What consent you are giving. Many free tools use your data to market loans and cards to you.
- That the app never asks for your net-banking password, card PIN or OTP for anything other than its own login.
- That it never charges a fee to “improve” or “clean” your score. Only inaccurate data can be corrected, and you can do that yourself for free.

After you check: what next?
If your score is lower than you expected, don’t start applying to lenders at random. Each application adds a hard enquiry. Find the cause first: an error, high card usage, an old overdue or a settled account. Then fix what you can. If you want help, our Credit Score Booster team reviews your report with you and tells you what will actually move it. We never promise a specific score, and nobody honestly can.
If your score is 600 or more and you are salaried with a take-home of ₹40,000 or more, Omozing, the digital lending brand of RBI-registered NBFC Aparampaar Finance, can consider you for a personal loan. A credit officer reads your full report, not just the number.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best website to check my credit score in India for free?
The most reliable are the official websites of the four bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Each must provide one free full credit report with score a calendar year. Bank and fintech apps are convenient for tracking but may show only one bureau or a summary.
How many free credit reports can I get each year?
One free full report from each of the four bureaus every calendar year, so four in total. Spreading them out, one every three months, keeps you regularly informed at no cost.
Does checking my score on an app reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not affect it. Only lenders’ checks when you apply for credit count as hard enquiries.
Why is my CIBIL score different from my Experian score?
Each bureau receives data from the lenders that report to it and uses its own scoring model, so small differences are normal. A large gap can mean an account is missing or wrong on one report, which is worth checking.
Where do I complain if a bureau doesn’t fix an error?
First raise a dispute with the bureau and the lender that reported the data. If it remains unresolved, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman through the RBI complaint portal at cms.rbi.org.in.
Are credit repair agencies that charge fees worth it?
Be cautious. No one can remove accurate negative information early, and you can dispute errors yourself for free. Avoid anyone who asks for an upfront fee and promises a particular score.
