Low Credit Score Repair: A Plan for Your Score Band

Table of Contents

In short: Repairing a low credit score starts with knowing which band you are in and why. Below about 550 the cause is usually an unresolved default, settlement or write-off, and repair is a 12 to 24-month rebuild. Between 550 and 649 it is usually late payments or high card balances, and many people see real progress in 6 to 12 months. Between 650 and 699 it is often just utilisation and too many applications, which can improve within a few statement cycles. In every band, the work is the same in kind: fix errors, clear overdues, lower balances, then add months of on-time payments. Nobody can legally remove accurate information or promise you a score.

This guide gives you a repair plan matched to your starting score. If you are deciding whether to do it yourself or pay for help, read DIY vs paid credit repair; if you are already near 700 and want quick wins, see how to raise your CIBIL score in 30 to 60 days.

Step zero: find out why your score is low

Repair without diagnosis wastes months. Download your full report from each bureau (TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark); you are entitled to one free full report from each every calendar year. Then look for these, in order of damage:

  1. Accounts that are overdue right now

Any current days-past-due figure. These hurt every month they stay open.

  2. Negative statuses

Settled, written off, suit filed or a 90+ days past due history.

  3. Errors

Accounts you don’t recognise, loans you closed still shown as open, wrong amounts or duplicates.

  4. High card utilisation

Statement balances close to your limits.

  5. A cluster of enquiries

Many loan or card applications in the past few months.

If you are not sure which of these is behind your number, our guide on which factor lowered your CIBIL score helps you match the symptom to the cause.

Your repair plan, by score band

Below 550: rebuild

Usual cause: an active default, a settlement or a write-off, sometimes several.
Priority: resolve every overdue account, get closure letters, then add new positive history with a secured card.
Typical horizon: 12 to 24 months.

550 to 649: repair

Usual cause: a run of late payments, high card balances, or an old settlement.
Priority: stop any new late payment, bring cards well below their limits, dispute errors.
Typical horizon: 6 to 12 months.

650 to 699: polish

Usual cause: utilisation, recent applications, or a thin history.
Priority: pay balances before the statement date, pause applications, keep old cards open.
Typical horizon: 2 to 6 months.

Typical time to a healthier score, by starting band

0 6 12 18 24 months Below 550 12–24 months 550 to 649 6–12 650 to 699 2–6

Indicative ranges based on how credit reports typically respond once the main cause is fixed and every later payment is on time. They are not a promise: your timeline depends on your whole history, how lenders report, and what you do in the meantime.

If you are below 550

Scores in this range (people search for things like “360 CIBIL score” or “580 CIBIL score”) almost always reflect serious negatives. Unsecured lenders will usually decline until they are resolved, so put loans aside and focus on cleaning up.

  • List every negative account with lender, amount and status.
  • Talk to each lender. Ask for the full outstanding and whether penal charges can be waived. Paying in full closes the account as paid, which reads better than settled.
  • If you settled in the past, ask the lender what it would take to pay the shortfall and update the status.
  • Get no-dues certificates and check the report updates within a couple of reporting cycles.
  • Start fresh positive history with a secured credit card against a fixed deposit, used lightly and paid in full.

For write-offs specifically, read what to do about a CIBIL write-off.

If you are between 550 and 649

This is where most salaried borrowers we speak to land after a rough patch: a few late EMIs, a card that ran too high, a small app loan that slipped.

  • Make every payment on time from today. Set auto-debits a day or two after salary credit.
  • Bring each card’s statement balance well under half its limit, and lower if you can.
  • Clear small dues first. A forgotten card fee or a ₹3,000 app overdue does as much damage as a big one.
  • Dispute errors through the bureau. Our dispute guide includes templates.
  • Stop applying for a few months; each rejection adds an enquiry.

If you are between 650 and 699

You are close. A “640 CIBIL score” and a 690 often differ by just one or two fixable things.

  • Pay card balances down before the statement is generated, not just by the due date.
  • Ask for a credit-limit increase on a card you use well, then don’t spend into it.
  • Keep your oldest card open with a small monthly spend.
  • Space out applications and use pre-qualification checks where available.

Credit repair agencies: what they can and can’t do

Searching for a “credit score repair agency near me” is understandable. A good service can read your report with you, draft disputes, plan which accounts to tackle first and keep you on track. What no one can do is delete accurate negative information or guarantee a score. Walk away from anyone who:

  • promises a specific score or a fixed number of points by a date,
  • offers to “remove your name from CIBIL” or erase a genuine default,
  • asks you to share bureau login passwords or OTPs,
  • asks for large fees upfront before doing any work, or
  • tells you to stop paying lenders while they “negotiate”.

Omozing’s Credit Score Booster is a structured programme for this: a credit specialist reviews your report and gives you a step-by-step plan for the items that will move it. We are open about the limits: we can’t remove accurate information or promise a score.

If you need to borrow while repairing

Once your score is 600 or more and your take-home is ₹40,000 a month or more, Omozing can consider you for an unsecured personal loan, with a credit officer reading your full report. Frequently asked questions

How can I improve my credit score in India?

Check your full reports, dispute errors, clear any overdue amounts, keep card balances low on the statement date, pay every EMI on time and avoid several applications at once. The order matters: fix active overdues and errors first.

How long does it take to repair a low credit score?

It depends on the cause. Utilisation problems can improve within a few statement cycles, late payments typically take 6 to 12 months of clean history, and defaults or write-offs can take 12 to 24 months or more. No one can promise a specific timeline.

Can a credit repair agency remove negative entries?

Only if they are wrong. Accurate information, such as a genuine late payment or settlement, can’t be removed by anyone. A legitimate service helps you dispute errors and plan the steps that actually improve your report.

What should I do if my CIBIL score is 580?

Look for active overdues or recent late payments first and clear them, bring card balances down, dispute any errors and avoid new applications. Once your score is back above 600, more lenders, including Omozing for salaried applicants, can consider you.

Does a secured credit card help repair my score?

Yes, if you use it lightly and pay in full every month. It adds a steady record of on-time payments, which is what repairs a score over time.

Can I get an emergency loan while my score is low?

Secured options such as a gold loan or a loan against a fixed deposit are usually available. For unsecured loans, choose a regulated lender, check the app is in the RBI’s directory and read the Key Fact Statement before signing.

Will paying off a settled account improve my score?

Paying the shortfall and getting the lender to update the status to closed is better than leaving it as settled. The past history remains, but its weight fades as on-time payments build up.
