Your credit score tells a lender whether you have repaid in the past. FOIR tells them whether you can afford the next EMI. It is one of the quietest reasons loans get cut or declined, and one of the easiest to fix once you understand it. This guide is part of our salaried money playbook; it builds on CTC vs in-hand salary, because FOIR always starts from the in-hand number.
What is FOIR? The full form and the formula
FOIR = Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio. In banking and lending it is also called the debt-to-income or EMI-to-income ratio. It answers one question: after your existing commitments and the proposed loan, how much of each month’s salary is left for living?
There is no single RBI-mandated FOIR for personal loans. Each bank and NBFC sets its own limit in its credit policy, often allowing a higher ratio for higher incomes because more rupees are left over even at the same percentage.
What counts as a fixed obligation
Usually counted
- EMIs on personal, home, car, two-wheeler and education loans
- Consumer-durable and “no-cost” EMIs
- Credit card EMIs, and often a notional amount for card balances you carry
- Short-term app loans visible in your bureau report or bank statement
- The EMI of the loan you are applying for
Usually not counted
- Groceries, utilities, fuel and school fees
- SIPs, insurance premiums and recurring deposits
- A loan you closed, once the bureau shows it closed
- Rent, at many lenders (some do consider it)
Two practical points. First, the lender reads obligations from your credit report and your bank statement, so a loan you forget to mention will still appear. Second, a loan you have repaid but the lender has not yet reported as closed still counts; keep the closure letter or NOC handy.
FOIR calculation with an example
An illustrative profile, not a real customer: Rahul takes home ₹60,000 a month. He pays a two-wheeler EMI of ₹4,000, a phone EMI of ₹3,000 and a credit card EMI of ₹5,000.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Existing obligations | ₹4,000 + ₹3,000 + ₹5,000 | ₹12,000 |
| Current FOIR | ₹12,000 ÷ ₹60,000 × 100 | 20% |
| Room at a 50% limit | (50% × ₹60,000) − ₹12,000 | ₹18,000 a month |
| Loan that EMI supports | ₹18,000 over 36 months at an illustrative 16% a year | about ₹5.1 lakh |
Illustrative rate used only for the arithmetic; it is not an offer. Omozing rates start from 11% a year and your actual rate, fees and APR are in the Key Fact Statement. Lenders’ FOIR limits differ.
Rahul’s FOIR as the new loan grows (36 months)
Assumes ₹60,000 net monthly income, ₹12,000 of existing EMIs, and a 36-month loan at an illustrative 16% a year. Scale: 3px per percentage point. At ₹7 lakh the FOIR crosses a 50% limit, so a lender would typically offer less or ask for changes.
Why FOIR matters as much as your credit score
A 780 score with a 70% FOIR can be declined, while a 650 score with a 25% FOIR may be approved. The score is history; FOIR is capacity. Lenders care about both, plus job stability and your bank statement, as we explain in 5 things lenders check besides your credit score.
A high FOIR also matters to you, not just the lender. If more than half your salary goes to EMIs, a delayed salary, a medical bill or a rent hike leaves no cushion, and that is how people slip into short-term app loans. If that has already happened, read what overleveraged means and how to fix it.
Your score says you repay. Your FOIR says you can.
How to lower your FOIR before you apply
Close the smallest loans first
A ₹3,000 phone EMI with four months left costs you ₹3,000 of FOIR room. Paying it off and getting the closure reflected can free several lakh of borrowing capacity.
Replace many small loans with one
Several app loans and EMIs add up fast. Consolidating them into one longer EMI lowers the monthly obligation. For loan-app debt, Omozing SmartSwitch is built for exactly this.
Choose a longer tenure
The same ₹5 lakh is an EMI of about ₹24,482 over 24 months but about ₹17,579 over 36 months at an illustrative 16%. You pay more interest overall, so prepay later if you can.
Add a co-applicant
A working spouse or family member adds income to the denominator. With a ₹40,000 co-applicant income, Rahul’s room at 50% rises from ₹18,000 to ₹38,000 a month. See applying with a co-applicant.
Show all your regular income
Rental income or a second regular income, documented in your bank statement, may be considered by some lenders.
Borrow what you need, not the maximum
A smaller loan keeps FOIR comfortable and the EMI easy. Use our loan amount by salary table to size it.
FOIR for business loans and home loans
For self-employed borrowers, lenders apply the same idea to business income, usually taken from ITRs, GST returns and bank statements, and often look at cash-flow cover rather than salary. Home-loan lenders also use FOIR, sometimes with slightly different limits because the loan is secured and the tenure long. The arithmetic is the same: obligations divided by income. Omozing currently lends to salaried individuals; for business finance, see our guide to types of business loan.
Know your FOIR? See what you can borrow.
Omozing personal loans are for salaried people with a take-home of ₹40,000+ a month and a credit score from 600. A credit officer reads your full file, and co-applicants are welcome. Rates from 11% a year, with the full cost in the KFS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of FOIR?
FOIR stands for Fixed Obligation to Income Ratio. It is the percentage of your net monthly income that goes to fixed debt payments such as EMIs.
How is FOIR calculated?
Add all your monthly EMIs and other fixed loan obligations, including the EMI of the loan you are applying for, divide by your net monthly income and multiply by 100.
What is a good FOIR for a personal loan?
Lower is better. Many lenders work within roughly 40% to 60% depending on income and policy. Keeping total EMIs well below half your take-home also leaves you a safety margin.
Does FOIR affect my CIBIL score?
No. FOIR is not part of the credit score calculation. But a high FOIR makes missed payments more likely, and those do hurt your score.
Is rent included in FOIR?
Some lenders include rent and some do not. EMIs and loan obligations are always included, so focus on those first.
Can I get a loan with a high FOIR?
Possibly a smaller one, or a longer tenure, or with a co-applicant. Consolidating several small loans into one EMI is often the fastest way to bring FOIR down.
