In short: Yes, you can get a personal loan with a low or bad CIBIL score in India, but the file you submit matters more than it does for a borrower with 780. Pull your own report first, fix any errors, keep two clean documents ready (a 6-month salary-account statement and your latest salary slip), apply to one lender that reads the full report rather than many at once, and read the Key Fact Statement before you sign. This guide is the checklist and the step-by-step walkthrough.

If you want to know which lenders consider a low score, read personal loan for a low or bad CIBIL score: which lenders to try. If you want Omozing’s offer for scores from 600, see our personal loan with low CIBIL page. This post is about the part most borrowers get wrong: preparing the application itself, so a credit officer has every reason to say yes.

Why the file matters more when your score is low

A borrower with a score of 790 is often approved on the score alone. Below about 700, an automated system is more likely to decline or refer the case. A lender that still considers you will look harder at the rest of the picture: how steady your salary is, how much of it already goes to EMIs, whether your recent months are clean, and whether the reason for the low score is behind you.

That is good news. The score is history you cannot change this week. The file is something you can improve before you click “apply”.

Step 0: the eligibility self-check (before any application)

Run through this list honestly. Every “no” is either something to fix first or something to explain in your application.

Can your salary carry another EMI? An illustrative check

Take-home salary: ₹45,000 a month ₹8,000 ₹7,630 ₹29,370 left for rent, food, bills, savings Existing EMIs (bike loan, card EMI) New EMI: ₹1.5 lakh over 24 months What remains each month All EMIs together: ₹15,630 About 35% of take-home pay

Illustrative profile, not a real customer. New EMI assumes ₹1,50,000 for 24 months at 20% a year on a reducing balance, used only for the arithmetic; it is not an Omozing quote. Your actual rate, fees and APR appear in the Key Fact Statement. Bar widths are proportional to ₹45,000 across 600 units.

Lenders want to see that a new EMI still leaves you enough to live on. If your EMIs already take half your salary, the answer is usually to borrow less, choose a longer tenure, close a small loan first, or add a co-applicant.

The document checklist

Low-score applications stall most often on missing or messy paperwork. Keep these ready as clear PDFs, not phone photos of a screen.

DocumentWhat the lender checksLow-score tip
Bank statement, last 6 months (salary account)Salary credits, bounced EMIs or cheques, other loan EMIs, end-of-month balanceDownload it directly from net banking as a PDF. Do not edit it. Any EMI bounce in these months matters more than an old default.
Latest salary slipEmployer, gross and net pay, deductionsMake sure the net pay matches the credit in your bank statement. If it doesn’t (reimbursements, arrears), be ready to explain.
PANIdentity and bureau matchYour PAN name must match your bank account name. Mismatches cause bureau “no hit” errors.
Aadhaar (for e-KYC)Identity and addressKeep the mobile number linked to Aadhaar active for OTP verification.
Your own credit reportNot submitted, but read by you firstSpot errors and closed loans still showing as open. Dispute them before you apply.
NOCs / closure lettersProof that a past default or app loan is closedIf your report still shows a loan you have closed, attach the NOC with a short explanation.

Omozing asks salaried applicants for two documents: the 6-month salary-account bank statement and the latest salary slip, with identity verified digitally. Other lenders may ask for more, including address proof; see common address proof documents.

The application walkthrough, step by step

  1. Pull your own reports (week 1)

Get your free report from at least two bureaus. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and does not lower it. Note the score, every open loan, any “settled”, “written off” or overdue status, and the enquiry list.

  2. Fix what is wrong (weeks 1–4)

Raise disputes for wrong entries, such as a closed loan still shown as open or a loan that isn’t yours. Our CIBIL dispute guide has templates. Bureaus resolve disputes in weeks, so start early.

  3. Clean up the last three months

Pay every EMI and card bill on time, bring card balances down, and do not take any new app loan. Recent behaviour is what a credit officer reads first.

  4. Decide the amount and tenure

Ask for what you need, not the maximum. A smaller amount or a longer tenure lowers the EMI and makes approval easier. Omozing lends up to ₹25 lakh for 3–36 months, but a first loan with a low score is usually sized well below the maximum.

  5. Choose one suitable lender

Apply where your profile fits: a lender that states it considers your score band and reads the whole report. Applying to five apps in a week adds five hard enquiries and lowers your score further.

  6. Apply with clean documents and a short explanation

If your report has a past blemish, say what happened and what changed (a job loss in 2023, now employed for 18 months, all EMIs paid since). A human reviewer can weigh that; an algorithm can’t.

  7. Answer the verification call

Expect a call to confirm employment, purpose and existing loans. Be consistent with what your documents show.

  8. Read the Key Fact Statement before you sign

The KFS shows the rate, every fee, the APR and the repayment schedule. Under RBI digital lending rules you get it before signing, and a fee not in the KFS cannot be charged later.

  9. Receive the money in your own account

The disbursal goes straight from the lender to your bank account. Set up auto-debit for the EMI so the first payment is never late.

Four things that lift a low-score application

A co-applicant

A spouse, parent, sibling or even a friend with a steady income and a good score strengthens the file. Omozing accepts co-applicants. See how a co-applicant strengthens your application.

Proof that the problem is closed

NOCs for past defaults or settled app loans, and a bank statement showing months of on-time EMIs since.

A smaller first ask

A modest first loan repaid on time is the fastest way to a bigger, cheaper second one.

Fewer, cleaner loans

Closing small app loans before applying, or consolidating them with SmartSwitch, reduces the number of open accounts a lender sees.

Mistakes that sink low-score applications

Avoid

  • Applying to many apps the same week.
  • Editing a bank statement or salary slip. It is fraud and it is detected.
  • Paying any “processing” or “insurance” fee before approval. Omozing never asks for upfront fees.
  • Borrowing from an app that can’t name its RBI-registered lender.
  • Hiding an existing loan; it shows on your report anyway.

Do instead

  • One considered application at a time.
  • Original PDFs downloaded from net banking.
  • Check the lender in the RBI directory of digital lending apps.
  • Ask for the KFS and read the APR.
  • Disclose every loan and explain old issues briefly.

If you have already been turned down, read what to do after a loan rejection for a bad CIBIL score before you try again.

Your file is ready? Apply once, with a lender that reads it

Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600 and take-home pay of ₹40,000+. A credit officer reads your full report, not just the number. Rates start from 11% a year; your exact rate and fees are in the KFS.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for a personal loan with a low CIBIL score?

For an Omozing loan, salaried applicants need a 6-month salary-account bank statement and the latest salary slip, with PAN and Aadhaar verified digitally. Keep NOCs for any closed loans that still show as open on your report.

What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?

It depends on the lender. Many banks prefer 700–750 or more. Omozing considers salaried applicants with a credit score from 600, and a credit officer reviews the full report.

Should I apply to several lenders at once to improve my chances?

No. Each application adds a hard enquiry, and several in a short time lower your score and make you look desperate for credit. Prepare well and apply to one suitable lender at a time.

Does checking my own CIBIL score reduce it?

No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and has no effect. You are entitled to one free full credit report from each bureau every calendar year.

Can a co-applicant help if my score is low?

Yes. A co-applicant with steady income and a good score adds repayment strength. Omozing accepts spouses, family members and even friends as co-applicants.

Is it safe to pay a fee to get a loan approved with bad credit?

No. Regulated lenders deduct fees from the disbursed amount as shown in the Key Fact Statement. Anyone asking for money before approval is a red flag, and Omozing never asks for upfront fees.

Omozing is the digital lending brand of Aparampaar Finance Private Limited, an RBI-registered non-deposit-taking NBFC. Loans are subject to credit assessment; approval is not guaranteed. See our regulatory disclosures and grievance redressal process.
