Omozing Personal Loan · For childbirth and maternity costs
Scans, tests, the delivery itself and the first weeks at home add up quickly, and maternity insurance often pays less than families expect. Here is how to plan the costs, use every rupee of cover, and, if there is still a gap, fund it with a manageable EMI.
The delivery bill is the largest single item, but it is only part of the cost. Insurer ManipalCigna publishes indicative hospitalisation costs by city tier: about ₹50,000 in tier 2 cities to ₹1,10,000 in tier 1 cities for a normal delivery, and ₹80,000 to ₹1,80,000 for a caesarean section.
Source: ManipalCigna Health Insurance, cost-of-treatment pages for normal delivery and caesarean delivery, indicative figures; checked October 2026. Tier 1 includes cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune and Ahmedabad. Actual costs depend on hospital, room category, doctor and any complications.
Around the delivery, families also pay for antenatal care, after-care and the baby’s first months. The table below is illustrative, to help you list items rather than predict their size; ask your hospital for its package and exclusions.
| Stage | Typical items | Often covered by insurance? |
|---|---|---|
| Pregnancy (antenatal) | Consultations, scans, blood tests, supplements | Usually outpatient, so often not covered unless your policy includes it |
| Delivery | Room, labour ward or theatre, doctor and anaesthetist fees, medicines | Yes, if maternity cover applies, up to the sub-limit |
| Newborn care | Paediatrician, vaccines, any special or intensive care | Depends on whether the newborn is covered from birth |
| After discharge | Follow-up visits, lactation support, help at home | Partly, within post-hospitalisation limits |
| Setting up | Cot, car seat, clothes, feeding and nappies | No |
Many families learn about maternity cover only after the pregnancy is confirmed, when it is usually too late to buy it. Here is what to check:
Many employer group health policies include maternity cover, sometimes for a spouse too. Ask HR for the maternity limit, whether a waiting period applies and how to add the baby after birth.
Individual and family floater policies that offer maternity cover usually apply a waiting period, commonly from 9 months up to 4 years depending on the plan (ManipalCigna, checked October 2026). If the pregnancy begins before the period ends, the delivery is generally not covered.
Maternity benefits are often capped at a fixed amount or a percentage of the sum insured, separately for normal and caesarean delivery. Your policy schedule shows the cap.
Check whether the newborn is covered from birth, for how long, and the deadline for adding the baby to the policy.
For a planned delivery at a network hospital, ask for pre-authorisation in advance, ideally in the third trimester, so the admission desk already has approval.

The Code on Social Security, 2020, which came into force on 21 November 2025, now governs maternity benefit. In summary (iPleaders, verified July 2026):
Paid leave protects most salaried mothers’ income for six months, but many parents extend leave without pay, or one partner reduces hours. Plan any EMI around the household’s income during that period, not the income before it. Check your employer’s own policy, which may be more generous, and the official text before relying on these points.
Salaried parents with a take-home salary of ₹40,000 or more and a score of 600 or more, where insurance and savings will not fully cover the delivery and the first months.
Couples whose maternity cover is still in its waiting period, or who chose a hospital outside their insurer’s network and will wait for reimbursement.
The EMI would only be affordable on two full salaries while one parent plans extended unpaid leave. Size the loan for the lower income.
Ask the hospital for its package price for normal and caesarean delivery, and plan for the higher figure; a planned normal delivery can change in the labour room. Subtract the insurer’s expected payment (within the sub-limit) and the savings you can use while keeping an emergency cushion for the baby’s first months. The difference is your gap.
An illustrative case in a tier 1 city: a caesarean package at ₹1.6 lakh, antenatal care and newborn essentials of ₹60,000, and a group policy paying ₹75,000. With ₹45,000 from savings, the gap is ₹1 lakh. Over 12 months at our starting rate, that is an EMI of about ₹8,838.
Reducing-balance maths at 11% a year, our starting rate, before the processing fee. Your rate depends on your credit profile and is shown in your Key Fact Statement.
| Rate (per year) | 6 months | 12 months | 18 months | Total interest over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11% (our starting rate) | ₹17,205 | ₹8,838 | ₹6,052 | ₹6,058 |
| 16% (illustrative) | ₹17,453 | ₹9,073 | ₹6,286 | ₹8,877 |
| 20% (illustrative) | ₹17,652 | ₹9,263 | ₹6,476 | ₹11,161 |
Reducing-balance EMIs on ₹1,00,000 before the processing fee (3%–7% + GST). 16% and 20% are illustrations, not offers; your rate, fee and APR are in your Key Fact Statement. Prepayment terms are in your loan agreement.
If an insurance reimbursement is expected, choose a tenure you can carry and prepay when the claim is settled.
| Option | Works well when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Employer group maternity cover | Your or your spouse’s employer offers it | Sub-limits; add the baby within the deadline |
| Retail maternity cover | Bought well before planning a pregnancy | Waiting periods; higher premium |
| Government hospitals and schemes | Good facilities near you; eligible for maternity schemes | Choice of doctor and room; ask the hospital about eligibility |
| Savings built during pregnancy | You have several months’ notice | Keep a cushion for the newborn |
| Hospital instalment plans | Your hospital offers one | Processing fees; limited to that hospital |
| Unsecured personal loan | A gap repaid over 6 to 18 months | Interest and fee; compare APRs |
| Credit card or app loans | Only small amounts cleared within weeks | High interest during a period of lower income |
You do not need to share any medical records with Omozing.
Either parent can apply, and the other can join as a co-applicant to strengthen the application. Lenders assess current salary credits, so if leave without pay is planned, apply with that in mind and keep the EMI comfortable on the lower income. If your score is below 750, see how we assess scores from 600.
Applying in the third trimester, rather than on the day of admission, gives you time to read the Key Fact Statement calmly and keeps the funds ready when you need them.
Apply for the amount insurance and savings do not cover, with an EMI sized for your income during leave. You will see the exact rate, fees and APR in your Key Fact Statement before you sign, and Omozing never asks for an upfront fee.
